Abstract The 56th meeting of the Executive Committee (EC) of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) was held in Bari, Italy, in July/August, 2024, and 115 submitted taxonomy proposals were reviewed. A total of 112 were subsequently ratified by the ICTV membership. An additional 9 error correction proposals were also approved in August 2025. This article lists the taxonomy proposals that have now been incorporated into release 40 version v2 of the Master Species List ( https://ictv.global/msl ), the Virus Metadata Resource ( https://ictv.global/vmr ), and associated ICTV databases. In addition to the assignments of 1,563 new virus species, 243genera, 55 families, 11 orders, and 8 classes, there were substantial additions to higher taxonomic ranks. These include the creation of a new realm ( Singelaviria ), which is based on the recognition of a separate evolutionary origin for the hallmark capsid genes of members of the kingdom Helvetiavirae. These express capsid proteins forming a single jelly-roll fold that is structurally and evolutionarily distinct from those of members of the family Bamfordvirae , assigned to the realm Varidnaviria . Furthermore, the realm Varidnaviria underwent a major reorganization, including the addition of a new kingdom, Abadenavirae . Another notable change was the classification of the vertebrate-infecting single-stranded DNA anellovirids into a new phylum Commensaviricota (kingdom Shotokuvirae , realm Monodnaviria ). Archaeal viruses infecting the hyperthermophilic Archaeoglobi were assigned to a new phylum Calorviricota , in the kingdom Trapavirae (realm Monodnaviria ), whereas RNA viruses infecting hyperthermophilic bacteria were classified into a new phylum Artimaviricota (realm Riboviria ). In recognition of his extensive and valuable contributions to virus taxonomic developments in Study Groups and over the period of his EC membership, Stuart Siddell was honoured as a new life member of the ICTV. The ICTV has created a new strategy for disseminating information on taxonomy advances through annual open-access publication of citeable taxonomy proposal summaries from each ICTV Subcommittee. A collective total of 354 co-authors of the seven summaries were drawn from members of each Subcommittee, the EC, and a very large number of contributors from the wider virology community.

Objective: Improving the AI-driven automated medical encoding of clinical text plays a vital role in gathering information on the occurrence of diseases to improve population-level health. This work presents a novel attention mechanism designed to enhance text classification models and ensure appropriate classification of medical concepts in unstructured electronic health records. Materials and Methods: We developed a deformable, phrase-level attention mechanism to identify important lexical word-level and contextual phrase-level information from clinical text documents. We evaluated conventional and transformer-based deep learning models that we extended with our attention mechanism on the extraction of critical cancer information (e.g., site, subsite, laterality, histology, behavior) from 629,908 electronic pathology reports and on the automated medical encoding of 52,722 hospital discharge summaries. Results: Transformer-based models with the deformable, phrase-level attention mechanism achieved the best performance on the extraction of critical cancer information from pathology reports. Conventional- and transformer-based models show similar or better performance than their baseline counterparts on the automated medical encoding of clinical documents. Discussion: The addition of phrase-level information allowed models extended with our proposed method to outperform standard word-level attention. Our method showed favorable properties for the real-world application in terms of model robustness and phenotyping. These results indicate that our method is promising for automated data harmonization for common data models. Conclusion: This work proposes a novel deformable, phrase-level attention mechanism that enhances text classification models in the extraction of medical concepts from clinical text documents. We demonstrate strong performances on two clinical text datasets and showcase real-world deployability of our method.

Here, this work uses machine learning (ML) to complement HEAT (Heat flux Engineering Analysis Toolkit) by developing 3-D footprint surrogate models for fast and accurate heat load calculations in the divertor of the SPARC tokamak. The focus is on shadowed regions, or magnetic shadows, caused by the 3-D geometry of plasma-facing components (PFCs). ML classifiers are employed to create a surrogate model for HEAT generated shadow masks, predicting these shadow masks and divertor heat flux profiles based on a diverse range of equilibria and only the plasma current, safety factor(q95) at the edge, and magnetic flux angles as input parameters. The ultimate goal is to integrate the model for real-time control and future operational decisions.

The thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity of high burnup (19 % FIMA) mixed oxide (U, Pu)O 2 nuclear fuel has been measured along the radial direction using a thermoreflectance-based method. Measured thermal conductivity exhibits a notable radial variation consistent with the expectations that a large temperature gradient across the annular fuel pellet leads to a heterogeneous microstructure. A common fuel performance model of thermal conductivity, the Lucuta-Inoue model, is used to analyze the measured thermal conductivity profile. Further, this model adequately captures the radial dependence of thermal conductivity except in the periphery. The analysis suggests that the characteristic radial shape of the thermal conductivity profile follows the burnup profile within the fuel pin. In the periphery, the high burnup structure is formed and the conductivity model, not capturing this effect, likely overestimates the thermal conductivity.
The brain has the remarkable ability to guide the performance of complex tasks. Distinct prefrontal cortical areas make specific contributions to this ability, with the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) critical for processing information related to trial outcomes and the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) critical for sustained effort and selecting the right action at the right time. Yet, in both areas, neural activity represents both outcome- and action-related quantities. How similar neural representations support different functions remains unclear. Here, we compared OFC and dmPFC activity in rats performing a spatial alternation task. We show that, in contrast to other task-related variables, task progression is represented in both areas, but with distinct patterns of across-trial reliability that match each area’s previously documented functional specialization. Our results indicate that the engagement of reliable, task-phase-specific activity patterns differs across prefrontal regions in a manner well suited to engage different computations at different times.

Oral facial cleft (OFC) comprises cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL/P) or cleft palate only. Genome wide association studies (GWAS) of isolated OFC have identified common single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in many genomic loci where the presumed effector gene (for example, IRF6 in the 1q32 locus) is expressed in embryonic oral epithelium. To identify candidates for functional SNPs at eight such loci we conduct a massively parallel reporter assay in a fetal oral epithelial cell line, revealing SNPs with allele-specific effects on enhancer activity. We filter these SNPs against chromatin-mark evidence of enhancers and test a subset in traditional reporter assays, which support the candidacy of SNPs at loci containing FOXE1, IRF6, MAFB, TFAP2A, and TP63. For two SNPs near IRF6 and one near FOXE1, we engineer the genome of induced pluripotent stem cells, differentiate the cells into embryonic oral epithelium, and discover allele-specific effects on the levels of effector gene expression, and, in two cases, the binding affinity of transcription factors FOXE1 or ETS2. Conditional analyses of GWAS data suggest the two functional SNPs near IRF6 account for the majority of risk for CL/P at this locus. This study connects genetic variation associated with OFC to mechanisms of pathogenesis.
Multi-layer film packaging (MLF) revolutionized food preservation by combining diverse material layers to optimize barrier properties, mechanical strength, and shelf-life. These materials are essential for transporting perishables across various climates and allow for access to fresh goods in “food deserts”, but they pose significant recycling challenges due to their structural complexity. This perspective examines key structure-property relationships governing barrier performance and highlights innovations in material design. We explore how machine learning can predict performance metrics and propose recyclable alternatives, integrating data-driven approaches with material science insights. By challenging the status quo of MLF design, we advocate for circularity in food packaging, inspiring innovation at the intersection of sustainability, material science, and artificial intelligence.
