2022 Component Innovation Awardee: Pecos Wind Power

Distributed wind energy systems supply electricity for nearby homes and businesses, often in remote and rural regions. Systems capable of capturing energy in areas with low wind speeds make it possible to deploy these clean energy systems in many geographic locations. Pecos Wind Power's 85-kilowatt (kW) horizontal-axis PW85 wind turbine shows potential to reduce the levelized cost of energy by approximately 55% when compared to typical small wind systems while achieving utility-scale capacity factors of more than 40% in areas with lower wind speeds. To maximize cost competitiveness, the Pecos Wind Power turbine needs a blade optimized for low wind speeds. Through its 2022 Competitiveness Improvement Project (CIP) award, Pecos Wind Power and partner Wetzel Wind Energy Services will model, optimize, fabricate, and validate a 14.5-meter wind turbine blade made specifically for these applications. Three prior CIP awards supported Pecos Wind Power's initial development of the PW85 turbine.

Method of printing and implementing refractive X-ray optical components

A method of fabricating a refractive optical element on a substrate may provide less expensive and more compact optics for an X-ray system. The method includes coating the substrate with a resin and providing radiation to a portion of the resin to cause two photon polymerization of the resin. The method further includes forming, by two photon polymerization, a first surface of a polymer refractive optical element from the resin. The first surface is disposed along an optical axis of the refractive optical element and the first surface has a roughness of less than 100 nanometers. Further, the method includes forming, by two photon polymerization, a second surface of the polymer refractive optical element. The second surface is disposed along the optical axis of the refractive optical element and the second surface has a roughness of less than 100 nanometers.

Waveguide including a conductive channel embedded in a substrate and with vias connected to an antenna and a circuit component

Waveguides and methods for manufacturing a waveguide that include forming a first channel in a first layer of dielectric material, the first channel comprising one or more walls; forming a second channel in a second layer of dielectric material, the second channel comprising one or more walls; depositing electrically conductive material on the one or more walls of the first channel; depositing electrically conductive material on the one or more walls of the second channel; arranging the first layer adjacent to the second layer to form a stack with the first channel axially aligned with and facing the second channel; and heating the stack so that the conductive material on the one or more walls of the first channel and the conductive material on the one or more walls of the second channel connect to form the waveguide.
