Negative Refraction in Time-Varying Strongly Coupled Plasmonic-Antenna–Epsilon-Near-Zero Systems

Time-varying metasurfaces are emerging as a powerful instrument for the dynamical control of the electromagnetic properties of a propagating wave. Here we demonstrate an efficient time-varying metasurface based on plasmonic nano-antennas strongly coupled to an epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) deeply subwavelength film. The plasmonic resonance of the metal resonators strongly interacts with the optical ENZ modes, providing a Rabi level spitting of ~30%. Optical pumping at frequency ω induces a nonlinear polarization oscillating at 2ω responsible for an efficient generation of a phase conjugate and a negative refracted beam with a conversion efficiency that is more than 4 orders of magnitude greater compared to the bare ENZ film. In this work, the introduction of a strongly coupled plasmonic system therefore provides a simple and effective route towards the implementation of ENZ physics at the nanoscale.

YbV 3 ⁢Sb 4 and EuV 3 ⁢Sb 4 vanadium-based kagome metals with Yb 2+ and Eu 2+ zigzag chains

Here, in this work, we present Yb⁢V 3 ⁢Sb 4 and Eu⁢V 3 ⁢Sb 4 , two compounds exhibiting slightly distorted vanadium-based kagome nets interleaved with zigzag chains of divalent Yb 2+ and Eu 2+ ions. Single crystal growth methods are reported alongside magnetic, electronic, and heat capacity measurements. Yb⁢V 3⁢ Sb 4 is a nonmagnetic metal with no collective phase transitions observed between 60 mK and 300 K. Conversely, Eu⁢V 3 ⁢Sb 4 is a magnetic kagome metal exhibiting easy-plane ferromagneticlike order below T C =32 K with hints of modulated spin texture under low field. With Yb⁢V 3 ⁢Sb 4 and Eu⁢V 3 ⁢Sb 4 we demonstrate another direction for the discovery and development of vanadium-based kagome metals while incorporating the chemical and magnetic degrees of freedom offered by a rare-earth sublattice.

Synchronization of nonsolitonic Kerr combs

Synchronization is a ubiquitous phenomenon in nature that manifests as the spectral or temporal locking of coupled nonlinear oscillators. In the field of photonics, synchronization has been implemented in various laser and oscillator systems, enabling applications including coherent beam combining and high-precision pump-probe measurements. Recent experiments have also shown time-domain synchronization of Kerr frequency combs via coupling of two separate oscillators operating in the dissipative soliton [i.e., anomalous group velocity dispersion (GVD)] regime. Here, we demonstrate all-optical synchronization of Kerr combs in the nonsolitonic, normal GVD regime in which phase-locked combs with high pump-to-comb conversion efficiencies and relatively flat spectral profiles are generated. Our results reveal the universality of Kerr comb synchronization and extend its scope beyond the soliton regime, opening a promising path toward coherently combined normal GVD Kerr combs with spectrally flat profiles and high comb-line powers in an efficient microresonator platform.

Intermediate Bandgap (IB) Cu 3 VS x Se 4−x Nanocrystals as a New Class of Light Absorbing Semiconductors

A new family of highly uniform, cubic-shaped Cu 3 VS x Se 4−x (CVSSe; 0 ≤ x ≤ 4) nanocrystals based on earth-abundant materials with intermediate bandgaps (IB) in the visible range is reported, synthesized via a hot-injection method. The IB transitions and optical band gap of the novel CVSSe nanocrystals are investigated using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, revealing tunable band gaps that span the visible and near-infrared regimes. The composition-dependent relationships among the crystal phase, optical band gap, and photoluminescence properties of the novel IB semiconductors with progressive substitution of Se by S are examined in detail. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy characterization confirm the high crystallinity and uniform size (~19.7 nm × 17.2 nm for Cu 3 VS 4 ) of the cubic-shaped nanocrystals. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations based on virtual crystal approximation support the experimental findings, showing good agreement in lattice parameters and band gaps across the CVSSe series and lending confidence that the targeted phases and compositions have been successfully realized. A current conversion efficiency, i.e., incident photon-to-current efficiency, of 14.7% was achieved with the p-type IB semiconductor Cu 3 VS 4 . These novel p-type IB semiconductor nanocrystals hold promise for enabling thin film solar cells with efficiencies beyond the Shockley–Queisser limit by allowing sub-band-gap photon absorption through intermediate-band transitions, in addition to the conventional direct-band-gap transition.

Phase-space Properties and Chemistry of the Sagittarius Stellar Stream Down to the Extremely Metal-poor ([Fe/H] ≲ -3) Regime

In this work, we study the phase-space and chemical properties of the Sagittarius (Sgr) stream, the tidal tails produced by the ongoing destruction of the Sgr dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy, focusing on its very metal-poor (VMP; [Fe/H] < -2) content. We combine spectroscopic and astrometric information from SEGUE and Gaia EDR3, respectively, with data products from a new large-scale run of the StarHorse spectrophotometric code. Our selection criteria yield ~1600 stream members, including >200 VMP stars. We find the leading arm (b > 0°) of the Sgr stream to be more metal-poor, by ~0.2 dex, than the trailing one (b < 0°). With a subsample of turnoff and subgiant stars, we estimate this substructure's stellar population to be ~1 Gyr older than the thick disk's. With the aid of an N-body model of the Sgr system, we verify that simulated particles stripped earlier (>2 Gyr ago) have present-day phase-space properties similar to lower metallicity stream stars. Conversely, those stripped more recently (<2 Gyr) are preferentially akin to metal-rich ([Fe/H] > -1) members of the stream. Such correlation between kinematics and chemistry can be explained by the existence of a dynamically hotter, less centrally concentrated, and more metal-poor population in Sgr dSph prior to its disruption, implying that this galaxy was able to develop a metallicity gradient before its accretion. Finally, we identified several carbon-enhanced metal-poor ([C/Fe] > +0.7 and [Fe/H] ≤ -1.5) stars in the Sgr stream, which might be in tension with current observations of its remaining core where such objects are not found.

Accumulator

An accumulator particularly adapted for use in controlling the pressure of a stream of fluid in its liquid phase utilizing the fluid in its gaseous phase was designed. The accumulator is characterized by a shell defining a pressure chamber having an entry throat for a liquid and adapted to be connected in contiguous relation with a selected conduit having a stream of fluid flowing through the conduit in its liquid phase. A pressure and volume stabilization tube, including an array of pressure relief perforations is projected into the chamber with the perforations disposed adjacent to the entry throat for accommodating a discharge of the fluid in either gaseous or liquid phases, while a gas inlet and liquid to gas conversion system is provided, the chamber is connected with a source of the fluid for continuously pressuring the chamber for controlling the pressure of the stream of liquid.

Tropospheric Chemistry

The fundamental processes that control the chemical composition and cycles of the global troposphere and how these processes and properties affect the physical behavior of the atmosphere are examined. The long-term information needs for tropospheric chemistry are: to be able to predict tropospheric responses to perturbations, both natural and anthropogenic, of these cycles, and to provide the information required for the maintenance and effective future management of the atmospheric component of our global life support system. The processes controlling global tropospheric biogeochemical cycles include: the input of trace species into the troposphere, their long-range transport and distribution as affected by the mean wind and vertical venting, their chemical transformations, including gas to particle conversion, leading to the appearance of aerosols or aqueous phase reactions inside cloud droplets, and their removal from the troposphere via wet (precipitation) and dry deposition.

Investigation of Polar Stratospheric Cloud Solid Particle Formation Mechanisms Using ILAS and AVHRR Observations in the Arctic

Satellite observations of denitrification and ice clouds in the Arctic lower stratosphere in February 1997 are used with Lagrangian microphysical box model calculations to evaluate nucleation mechanisms of solid polar stratospheric cloud (PSC) particles. The occurrences of ice clouds are not correlated in time and space with the locations of back trajectories of denitrified air masses, indicating that ice particle surfaces are not always a prerequisite for the formation of solid PSCs that lead to denitrification. In contrast, the model calculations incorporating a pseudoheterogeneous freezing process occurring at the vapor-liquid interface can quantitatively explain most of the observed denitrification when the nucleation activation free energy for nitric acid dihydrate formation is raised by only approx.10% relative to the current published values. Once nucleated, the conversion of nitric acid dihydrate to the stable trihydrate phase brings the computed levels of denitrification closer to the measurements. Simultaneous reaction and separation of chemicals

The reaction rate of hydrocarbon pyrolysis can be increased to produce solid carbon and hydrogen by the use of molten materials which have catalytic functionality to increase the rate of reaction and physical properties that facilitate the formation and contamination-free separation of the solid carbon. Processes, materials, reactor configurations, and conditions are disclosed whereby methane and other hydrocarbons can be decomposed at high reaction rates into hydrogen gas and carbon products without any carbon oxides in a single reaction step. The process also makes use of specific properties of selected materials with unique solubilities and/or wettability of products into (and/or by) the molten phase to facilitate generation of purified products and increased conversion in more general reactions.

Unfolder-based single-stage AC-AC conversion system

An power converter includes an unfolder connected to a three-phase source and has an output connection with a positive terminal, a negative terminal and a neutral terminal. The unfolder creates two unipolar piece-wise sinusoidal DC voltage waveforms offset by a half of a period. A three-input converter connected to the unfolder produces a quasi-sinusoidal output voltage across output terminals. Switches of the converter selectively connect the positive, negative and neutral inputs across the output terminals. A PWM controller controls a first duty ratio and a second duty ratio for the converter based on a phase angle of the source and a modulation index generated from an error signal related to a control variable. The duty ratios are time varying with a fundamental frequency of the source. The modulation index relates to output voltage of the converter, peak voltage or current of the source and/or peak current at the output terminals.

Phase Behavior of Diblock Copolymer–Homopolymer Ternary Blends with a Compositionally Asymmetric Diblock Copolymer

The phase behavior of ternary polymer blends comprising poly(cyclohexylethylene) (C) and polyethylene (E) homopolymers and a compositionally asymmetric CE diblock copolymer with f C = 0.67 was investigated, where f C is the volume fraction of C. Morphology was established in the phase prism (volume fractions of C, E, and CE vs. temperature) by optical transmission, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements. The locations of lamellar (LAM), hexagonally packed cylinders (HEX), and gyroid (GYR) ordered phases are shifted significantly towards lower fractions of C homopolymer compared to previous results obtained from ternary polymer blends with a symmetric diblock copolymer (f C = 0.5). Conversely, the Scott line of critical points, which delineates the boundary between single-phase disorder and macroscopic phase separation, remains virtually unchanged, coincident with the fraction of C homopolymer associated with the binary homopolymer blend critical composition. A central finding of this study is that the line of nearly congruent order-disorder transitions, where the LAM phase melts virtually directly into the disordered state, is decoupled in composition from that of the Scott line of critical points. A wide range of phase space between the compositions associated with the congruent transition and Scott line was identified as containing a microemulsion morphology. This study demonstrates that diblock copolymer compositional asymmetry significantly impacts the ordered phase regime but has a marginal effect on the region displaying macroscopic phase separation. It also provides useful guidance for tuning interfacial curvature, a crucial factor in the formation of bicontinuous microemulsions (BµEs).

Identifying Hidden Li–Si–O Phases for Lithium‐Ion Batteries via First‐Principle Thermodynamic Calculations

SiO–based materials are promising alloys and conversion‐type anode materials for lithium‐ion batteries and are recently found to be excellent dendrite‐proof layers for lithium‐metal batteries. However, only a small fraction of the Li–Si–O compositional space has been reported, significantly impeding the understanding of the phase transition mechanisms and the rational design of these materials both as anodes and as protection layers for lithium‐metal anodes. Herein, we identify three new thermodynamically stable phases within the Li–Si–O ternary system (Li 2 SiO 5 , Li 4 SiO 6, and Li 4 SiO 8 ) in addition to the existing records via first‐principle calculations. The electronic structure simulation shows that Li 2 SiO 5 and Li 4 SiO 8 phases are metallic in nature, ensuring high electronic conductivity required as electrodes. Moduli calculations demonstrate that the mechanical strength of Li–Si–O phases is much higher than that of lithium metal. The diffusion barriers of interstitial Li range from 0.1 to 0.6 eV and the interstitial Li hopping serves as the dominating diffusion mechanism in the Li–Si–O ternary systems compared with vacancy diffusion. These findings provide a new strategy for future discovery of improved alloying anodes for lithium‐ion batteries and offer important insight towards the understanding of the phase transformation mechanism of alloy‐type protection layers on lithium‐metal anodes.

Controlling Reaction Routes in Noble‐Metal‐Catalyzed Conversion of Aryl Ethers

Abstract Hydrogenolysis and hydrolysis of aryl ethers in the liquid phase are important reactions for accessing functionalized cyclic compounds from renewable feedstocks. On supported noble metals, hydrogenolysis is initiated by a hydrogen addition to the aromatic ring followed by C−O bond cleavage. In water, hydrolysis and hydrogenolysis proceed by partial hydrogenation of the aromatic ring prior to water or hydrogen insertion. The mechanisms are common for the studied metals, but the selectivity to hydrogenolysis increases in the order Pd 2 pressure, thus, the selectivity to hydrogenolysis is maximized by increasing temperature and decreasing H 2 pressure. Selectivity to C−O bond cleavage reaches >95 % in water and alkaline conditions.
