NGC 2110 - A Seyfert and X-ray elliptical galaxy with displaced kinematic and light centers

Kinematic and imaging observations of NGC 2110 are reported and it is found that the interstellar gas is orbiting with projected rotation axis parallel to the minor axis of the stellar light. The rotation curve is steep close to the center and flat farther out. However, the nucleus is displaced by about 220 pc from the apparent mass center of the galaxy. This last result is discussed in terms of models invoking differential obscuration of stars and gas, non-Keplerian motion of the gas, or a large mass of unseen material which dominates the rotation curve.

Evolution of a meteorite crater as a process of random displacements

An examination of the ages and sizes of 114 terrestrial impact craters shows that their aging kinetics can be described by the diffusion laws. The macrodiffusion coefficient which determines random displacements of mineral masses on the Earth has a mean value of 0.02 sq m/year. The amount of matter in a crater that contains information about the impact event decreases with time according to the 1/T law. The basic characteristic parameter of a crater is its initial area, inasmuch as sufficiently large craters are nearly surficial formations. The relaxation time of a crater is proportional to its initial area.

Displaced narrow absorption components in the spectra of mass-losing OB stars - Indications of corotating interaction regions?

The discovery of displaced narrow components (DNCs) in an increasingly large number of stars of various spectral types suggests that an explanation of these features may contribute significantly to understanding of winds from stars of all types. The reported properties of DNCs are summarized here with a view to evaluating one particular scenario for DNC formation which involves corotating interaction regions (CIRs) in the stellar wind. The relevant features of the CIR scenario are summarized, and the extent to which DNC properties support the CIR scenario is discussed.

Loss-compensation technique for fiber-optic sensors and its application to displacement measurements

This report describes a new type of intensity-modulating fiber-optic sensor which has high immunity to the effects of variations in the losses of the fiber-link. A variable-splitting-ratio transducer is used to differentially modulate the intensities of the light which it transmits and reflects. Using a four-fiber optical link, light is impinged onto the transducer from either direction, and in each case, the transmitted and reflected signals are measured. These four signals are then processed to remove the effects of the fiber and connector losses. Loss-compensated sensors of angular position and displacement are described, and their outputs are shown to be highly stable despite considerable variations in the transmissivities of the fiber-link components.

Stress intensity and crack displacement for small edge cracks

The weight function method was used to derive stress intensity factors and crack mouth displacement coefficients for small edge cracks (less than 20 percent of the specimen width) in common fracture specimen configurations. Contact stresses due to point application of loads were found to be small but significant for three-point bending and insignificant for four-point bending. The results are compared with available equations and numerical solutions from the literature and with unpublished boundary collocation results.

Comparison of measured and calculated forces on the RE-1000 free-piston Stirling engine displacer

The NASA Lewis Research Center has tested a 1 kW free-piston Stirling engine at the NASA Lewis test facilities. The tests performed over the past several years on the RE-1000 single cylinder engine are known as the sensitivity tests. This report presents an analysis of some of the data published in the sensitivity test report. A basic investigation into the measured forces acting on the unconstrained displacer of the engine is presented. These measured forces are then correlated with the values predicted by the NASA Lewis Stirling engine computer simulation. The results of the investigation are presented in the form of phasor diagrams. Possible future work resulting from this investigation is outlined.

Instantaneous velocity field measurements of a turbulent rectangular jet (AR-4) using particle image displacement velocimetry

A whole field experimental technique, commonly referred to as Particle Image Displacement Velocimetry (PIDV) is used for the measurement of the two dimensional instantaneous velocity fields in the transition region of a three dimensional jet issuing from a rectangular nozzle of an aspect ratio 4. The instability process of an initially laminar jet is studied visually and quantitatively to determine the structure and growth of the mixing region of the jet. The experiments were performed using an air jet at a Reynolds number based on the hydraulic diameter of 3600. The roll-up of the laminar shear layer into vortices and their subsequent interactions are examined.

Analysis of symmetric cross-ply laminated elastic plates using a higher-order theory. I - Stress and displacement

A simple theory for bending of composite anisotropic plates that are laminated symmetrically about their mid-plane is presented. This theory incorporates transverse shear deformation and transverse normal stress as well as the higher-order effects and fulfills the static conditions on the external boundary planes. Further on, by using Levy-type solutions considered in conjunction with the state space concept, the state of stress and displacement of rectangular plates for a variety of edge conditions is determined and the results are compared to their first-order shear deformation and classical counterparts, obtained by using the same state-space technique.

Polyphenylquinoxalines via Aromatic Nucleophilic Displacement

Polyphenylquinoxalines are produced by an aromatic nucleophilic displacement reaction involving an activated aromatic dihalide with an appropriate quinoxaline monomer. Polyphenylquinoxalines are high temperature thermoplastics used as adhesives, coatings, films and composite matrices. The novelty of this invention is threefold: (1) some of the quinoxaline monomers are new compositions of matter; (2) the phenylquinoxaline polymers which are the end products of the invention are new compositions of matter; and (3) the method of forming the polymers is novel, replacing a more costly prior art process, which is also limited in the kinds of products prepared therefrom.

Some comments on particle image displacement velocimetry

Laser speckle velocimetry (LSV) or particle image displacement velocimetry, is introduced. This technique provides the simultaneous visualization of the two-dimensional streamline pattern in unsteady flows as well as the quantification of the velocity field over an entire plane. The advantage of this technique is that the velocity field can be measured over an entire plane of the flow field simultaneously, with accuracy and spatial resolution. From this the instantaneous vorticity field can be easily obtained. This constitutes a great asset for the study of a variety of flows that evolve stochastically in both space and time. The basic concept of LSV; methods of data acquisition and reduction, examples of its use, and parameters that affect its utilization are described.

Error analysis for semi-analytic displacement derivatives with respect to shape and sizing variables

Sensitivity analysis is fundamental to the solution of structural optimization problems. Consequently, much research has focused on the efficient computation of static displacement derivatives. As originally developed, these methods relied on analytical representations for the derivatives of the structural stiffness matrix (K) with respect to the design variables (b sub i). To extend these methods for use with complex finite element formulations and facilitate their implementation into structural optimization programs using the general finite element method analysis codes, the semi-analytic method was developed. In this method the matrix the derivative of K/the derivative b sub i is approximated by finite difference. Although it is well known that the accuracy of the semi-analytic method is dependent on the finite difference parameter, recent work has suggested that more fundamental inaccuracies exist in the method when used for shape optimization. Another study has argued qualitatively that these errors are related to nonuniform errors in the stiffness matrix derivatives. The accuracy of the semi-analytic method is investigated. A general framework was developed for the error analysis and then it is shown analytically that the errors in the method are entirely accounted for by errors in delta K/delta b sub i. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that acceptable accuracy in the derivatives can be obtained through careful selection of the finite difference parameter.

Problems and research issues associated with the hybrid control of force and displacement

The hybrid control of force and position is basic to the science of robotics but is only poorly understood. Before much progress can be made in robotics, this problem needs to be solved in a robust manner. However, the use of hybrid control implies the existence of a model of the environment, not an exact model (as the function of hybrid control is to accommodate these errors), but a model appropriate for planning and reasoning. The monitored forces in position control are interpreted in terms of a model of the task as are the monitored displacements in force control. The reaction forces of the task of writing are far different from those of hammering. The programming of actions in such a modeled world becomes more complicated and systems of task level programming need to be developed. Sensor based robotics, of which force sensing is the most basic, implies an entirely new level of technology. Indeed, robot force sensors, no matter how compliant they may be, must be protected from accidental collisions. This implies other sensors to monitor task execution and again the use of a world model. This new level of technology is the task level, in which task actions are specified, not the actions of individual sensors and manipulators.

A method for determining crack opening load from load-displacement data

The fatigue crack opening load is determined as the tangent point on the ascending load-displacement data between the curved portion and the upper linear region. A model for the 'unzipping' behavior of the crack indicates that the curved portion of the load-deflection curve is second order. The opening load is determined by a nonlinear, least squares fit of the data to the model, which optimally locates the tangent point of the two curves. The method provided consistent results for determining opening load P(op) for 7475-T731 aluminum using data from a crack tip opening gage.

Dynamic grid deformation using Navier-displacement equation for deforming wings

For dynamic and aeroelastic applications of maneuvering wings, the solid boundaries undergo rigid-body motion and aeroelastic deformation. For rigid-body motion, the conservative fluid dynamics equation, in terms of the Eulerian description, is written in terms of a moving frame of reference, and the problem is solved on a time-independent body-conformed grid. For both rigid-body motion and aeroelastic deformation, the Navier-displacement equation, in terms of the Lagrangian coordinates, is modified for fluid-flow problems. It is used along with the Eulerian description of the conservative fluid dynamics equations to account for the grid deformation.
