Variational data augmentation for a learning-based granular predictive model of power outages

As the trend in climate change continues, extreme weather events are expected to occur with increasing frequency and severity and pose a significant threat to the electric power infrastructure. Regardless of the efforts a utility puts towards hardening the grid, storm-induced damage to the utility assets such as cables and distributed energy resources (DERs) that are particularly vulnerable to such events is unavoidable. Access to a highly granular, in space and time, outage forecasting tool with long lead times (i.e., days ahead) will enhance the efficiency of service restoration efforts. Here, in this study, we propose to develop and implement a multi-model framework as an operational tool based on a granular and multi-day outage forecasting model using operational numerical weather prediction model forecasts and detailed component outage information. An innovative two-layered recurrent neural network, i.e., a long-short-term-memory (LSTM)-based variational autoencoder (VAE) framework and a sliding window are used to address the uneven distribution of different types of weather events and make better use of the time-series data. Case studies are performed to demonstrate the performance of the new framework.

A Physics-Aligned Multi-Domain Machine Learning Framework for Time-Localised Diagnosis of Power Electronics Faults

This paper presents a physics-aligned framework for fault diagnosis in multi-phase power-electronic systems using cycle-synchronous windowing and multi-domain features derived from Fourier, wavelet, and Hilbert–Huang representations. While both logistic regression and multilayer perceptron (MLP) models achieve perfect performance under standard evaluation, blind unseen testing reveals a critical failure in a baseline MLP. This is shown to arise from model selection based on validation accuracy. Using validation-loss-based selection restores correct unseen performance and improves confidence. Feature ablation shows that Fourier and wavelet features dominate, while computational analysis indicates that feature extraction, particularly HHT, governs runtime.

Thrust Stand for Electric Propulsion Performance Evaluation

An electric propulsion thrust stand capable of supporting testing of thrusters having a total mass of up to 125 kg and producing thrust levels between 100 microN to 1 N has been developed and tested. The design features a conventional hanging pendulum arm attached to a balance mechanism that converts horizontal deflections produced by the operating thruster into amplified vertical motion of a secondary arm. The level of amplification is changed through adjustment of the location of one of the pivot points linking the system. Response of the system depends on the relative magnitudes of the restoring moments applied by the displaced thruster mass and the twisting torsional pivots connecting the members of the balance mechanism. Displacement is measured using a non-contact, optical linear gap displacement transducer and balance oscillatory motion is attenuated using a passive, eddy-current damper. The thrust stand employs an automated leveling and thermal control system. Pools of liquid gallium are used to deliver power to the thruster without using solid wire connections, which can exert undesirable time-varying forces on the balance. These systems serve to eliminate sources of zero-drift that can occur as the stand thermally or mechanically shifts during the course of an experiment. An in-situ calibration rig allows for steady-state calibration before, during and after thruster operation. Thrust measurements were carried out on a cylindrical Hall thruster that produces mN-level thrust. The measurements were very repeatable, producing results that compare favorably with previously published performance data, but with considerably smaller uncertainty.

The trustworthy digital camera: Restoring credibility to the photographic image

The increasing sophistication of computers has made digital manipulation of photographic images, as well as other digitally-recorded artifacts such as audio and video, incredibly easy to perform and increasingly difficult to detect. Today, every picture appearing in newspapers and magazines has been digitally altered to some degree, with the severity varying from the trivial (cleaning up 'noise' and removing distracting backgrounds) to the point of deception (articles of clothing removed, heads attached to other people's bodies, and the complete rearrangement of city skylines). As the power, flexibility, and ubiquity of image-altering computers continues to increase, the well-known adage that 'the photography doesn't lie' will continue to become an anachronism. A solution to this problem comes from a concept called digital signatures, which incorporates modern cryptographic techniques to authenticate electronic mail messages. 'Authenticate' in this case means one can be sure that the message has not been altered, and that the sender's identity has not been forged. The technique can serve not only to authenticate images, but also to help the photographer retain and enforce copyright protection when the concept of 'electronic original' is no longer meaningful.

Photon radiation effects on CdS/CuInSe2 thin film solar cells

The unknown tolerance of CuInSe2 cells to proton irradiation, was tested. It was shown that CdS/CuInSe2 solar cells have an inherent tolerance to irradiation by 1 MeV electrons up to at least 2 x 10 to the 16th power electrons/sq cm. Eleven, unencapsulated, 1 sq cm cells deposited on alumina substrates were irradiated with 1 MeV protons at normal incidence. The cells were exposed to six fluences ranging from 2.5 x 10 to the 10th power protons/sq cm to 5.0 x 10 to the 13th power protons/sq cm. After each interval of exposure, the cells were removed from the radiation chamber to undergo current/voltage characterization. It is shown that none of the cells electrical characteristics exhibited any degradation up to and including a fluence of 1 x 10 to the 11th power protons/sq cm. At fluences greater than this, the damage to the CuInSe2 cells V sub oc and fill factor (FF) was more severe than that exhibited by the Isc. The CuInSe2 cells proved to be approximately a factor of 50 more resistant to 1 MeV proton irradiation than silicon or gallium arsenide cells. Annealing of a CuInSe2 cell at 225 deg C for 6 minutes restored it to within 95% of its initial efficiency.

Metabolic Control Technology: Through the Windows of Space Exploration

As human presence in space will likely extend throughout the solar system, upmass and power constraints will become of paramount importance in considering logistics of transporting experimental animals and humans into space. Life support costs will be a significant part of the mission payload. One solution may be to take advantage of the emerging science of metabolic control, which allows the metabolism of animals to be reduced to a minimal level for a period of time, and allows for subsequent restoration to normal levels. Integration of a hibernation system within deep space mission architecture will solve many problems associated with long-duration space missions, such as payload cost reduction, space flight duration logistics, and demonstrate the potential application of this technology for human astronauts.

SHARP-Net: Platform for Self-Healing and Attack Resilient PMU Networks

Synchrophasor technology plays a pivotal role in developing the next generation of wide-area monitoring, protection, and control in the smart grid environment. As technology and communications infrastructures evolve, however, so do the attack surfaces in the synchrophasor network that can be exploited by advanced persistent threat (APT) actors to affect power system stability and reliability. In this paper, we propose a novel platform for developing a self-healing and attack-resilient PMU network (SHARP-Net) by instituting a state-of-the-art intrusion detection system (IDS) with an intrusion mitigation system (IMS) and an alert management system (AMS). In particular, the proposed platform detects anomalies during cyberattacks on phasor data concentrators (PDCs) based on the rules defined in the IDS, then the generated alerts are published to the IMS through the AMS. The proposed IMS proceeds to take automated corrective responses to mitigate cyberattacks by reconfiguring the synchrophasor network to isolate the compromised PDCs, and it orchestrates new PDCs to prevent the future propagation of attacks. Further, the IMS restores the system's observability by reconnecting the new PDCs to make the grid attack-resilient. In this work, the SHARP-Net platform is developed by using Python-based libraries, minimega's software-defined network, and virtual machine orchestration. We implement and validate the proposed SHARP-Net architecture by testing a PMU network in the smart grid environment. SHARP-Net showed promising performance in detecting cyberattacks and mitigating them through the network reconfiguration.

State Preparation of Antisymmetrized Geminal Power on a Quantum Computer without Number Projection

The antisymmetrized geminal power (AGP) is equivalent to the number projected Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer (PBCS) wave function. It is also an elementary symmetric polynomial (ESP) state. We generalize previous research on deterministically implementing the Dicke state to a state preparation algorithm for an ESP state, or equivalently AGP, on a quantum computer. Our method is deterministic and has polynomial cost, and it does not rely on number symmetry breaking and restoration. We also show that our circuit is equivalent to a disentangled unitary paired coupled cluster operator and a layer of unitary Jastrow operator acting on a single Slater determinant. Here, the method presented herein highlights the ability of disentangled unitary coupled cluster to capture nontrivial entanglement properties that are hardly accessible with traditional Hartree–Fock based electronic structure methods.

Enabling Realistic Communications Evaluations for ADMS

Increasing penetration levels of inverter-based distributed energy resources (DERs) in distribution systems are creating challenges in system operation. Currently, wired or proprietary wireless communications are used by advanced distribution management systems (ADMS) to detect the state of the system and control the DERs for optimal operation. Wireless communications are an alternative solution that can enable connectivity between the dispersed assets used in distribution system applications. As demand for the seamless integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) continues to increase, proper networking and communications systems are becoming important to support the DER infrastructure. This report summarizes validation of a private wireless LTE network in a laboratory environment. The purpose of this work is to 1) demonstrate the effectiveness of private wireless LTE communication for grid applications and 2) provide a means of evaluating latency and overall performance of wireless communication in grid applications. First, private wireless LTE communication was validated in a direct transfer trip relaying scenario as an example of one-way communications using grid equipment. This study provided a baseline understanding of the variation in latency for seven different kinds of wireless scenarios shown in Figure A below. As expected, weak (attenuated) wireless signal-based communication yielded the widest ranges in latency. When higher priority was set for the trip signal communication, this resulted in lower latency in communication timing. In the final phase of this project, the private wireless LTE network was validated using two-way communications in an advanced distribution management system (ADMS) testbed which was developed in the ESIF at NREL. The purpose of this was to study the impact of wireless communication on grid performance.

The current ability of HST to reveal morphological structure in medium-redshift galaxies

The capabilities of the Faint Object Camera (FOC) and the Wide Field Camera (WFC) are assessed on the basis of a brief program of single-orbit images of medium-faint galaxies. The FOC yielded a good resolved image of a compact galaxy at a blue magnitude J of 20.5 in a single-orbit exposure. WFC images have a survey capability that can include many galaxies per field, with sufficient resolving power to distinguish clearly between galaxies and stars down to the level of 0.2 arcsec, depending on the signal-to-noise ratio, and a reasonable capacity for morphology. Although some morphological detail can be discerned in even the aberrated images, deconvolutions are found to greatly enhance the ability to see structural detail. Even at the low S/N that is provided by single-orbit exposures, the more sophisticated restoration methods offer some advantage over simple Fourier or Lucy techniques.

Strategies for SEE Hardness Assurance From Buy-It-And-Fly-It to Bullet Proof

This part of the course first outlines the conventional Single Event Effect (SEE), radiation hardness assurance (RHA) approach, which emphasizes mission success. Next, Dr. Ladbury will discuss the challenges posed by new satellite platforms (e.g., cubesats, nanosats, etc.), where cost and schedule receive emphasis equal to if not greater than mission success. These additional pressures, along with growing demands to reduce size, weight and power, coupled with increased performance, drive many projects toward expanding their use of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) technologies. While this may reduce direct parts cost and procurement lead times, it undermines many cost-reduction strategies used for conventional SEE RHA and can make radiation testing and analysis one of the most significant risksor worse, a risk neglected altogether. That section will end with some approaches for restoring balance in the troika of mission success, cost, and schedule. This is captured in SEE RHA as risk management: identify the threat, evaluate the threat, and mitigate the threat.

Evaluating Variable-Impedance Magnetically-Insulated Transmission Lines as a Risk-Mitigation Measure for Next-Generation Pulsed Power

This project has produced the first detailed characterizations of power flow resulting from applying the “variable-impedance MITL” concept to real-life systems in Sandia’s pulsed power program (Z and next-generation pulsed power (NGPP)). We present simulation results and analyses for constant-impedance versions of both Z and NGPP and survey the operational viability of several variable-impedance re-designs in the parameter space of linear tapers. Circuit modeling (SCREAMER/Bertha) was used to pinpoint promising candidate designs, and EM-PIC (Empire) simulations were used to evaluate these candidates more rigorously. This approach was particularly successful in the Z regime which resulted in the identification of several viable variable-impedance MITL designs for each level. The approach was more challenged in the operating space NGPP occupies, producing data points that speak to a more restrictive design space due to anode plasma turn-on. In the end, we were able to converge on one viable variable-impedance design for the highest inductance line (level “F”) and one for the highest current line (level “A”). Altogether, the body of simulation evidence presented in this report suggest there does exist flexibility in operating space for magnetically-insulated transmission lines (MITLs) having variable geometric impedance to be a potential enabling technology for safely increasing current delivery (and potentially lowering stack voltage) in pulsed-power drivers by manipulating electron losses; however, operating points for a particular design must be carefully screened. Circuit and EM-PIC modeling provided consistent verdicts in safe operating regimes for operational viability, but additional physics such as anode plasma turn-on which is included in Empire but not in SCREAMER/Bertha was found to be a critical factor affecting power flow that lead to different assessments between the codes. It is not always the case that the occurrence of anode plasma caused a design to fail (some designs turned on anode plasma yet still delivered load currents meeting design targets); the details matter such as how early in the pulse anode surfaces break down (and how large a region). However, in every case that it did fail it was found that the feedback from anode plasma was the cause (i.e., turning off the anode plasma model in Empire restored agreement with the circuit model prediction). As circuit simulations represent an efficient and practical means of surveying design space compared to more computationally-expensive approaches such as EM-PIC, it could be prudent to invest in the research and development of models to include the effects of anode plasma such as ion emission in circuit codes. The variable-impedance MITL design is a new concept that enables controlled manipulation of the initial electron losses in the outer MITL and can be tested on Z today. We encourage follow-on work to explore further optimization (including alternative variable-impedance profiles, e.g., having constant dZ/dR), and to confirm the major findings presented in this report by fielding test hardware on actual Z shots.

Optimal take-off trajectories in the presence of windshear

The present consideration of takeoff trajectory optimization in eight different fundamental problems involving wind shears assumes that the power setting is held at the maximum value, and that the aircraft is controlled with respect to angle-of-attack. While the first three problems are least-squares ones of the Bolza type, the remaining five are minimax problems of the Chebyshev type which can be converted to Bolza type by means of suitable transformations. All problems are solved on the basis of the dual sequential gradient-restoration algorithm for optimal control problems. The trajectory solutions obtained are superior to constant angle-of-attack trajectories.
