Improving transition to IPv6-only via RFC8925 and IPv4 DNS Interventions

Nine years have passed since the American Registry for Internet Numbers exhausted its allocation of Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) addresses, and four years have passed since the United States Government mandated federal agencies to complete the transition to Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6). Despite the IPv4 address shortage and IPv6 mandate, Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs) are still struggling to sunset IPv4. As demonstrated on SC23’s SC23v6 wireless network, newer tooling such as RFC8925 allows clients to disable their IPv4 protocol stack while retaining legacy IP connectivity via the RFC6145 translation algorithm. However, SC23v6 wireless clients without RFC8925 support or a disabled IPv6 stack would continue to receive internet access via legacy IPv4. This paper introduces a method of using poisoned IPv4 Domain Name System (DNS) records to gracefully inform IPv4-only clients at SC24’s SC24v6 wireless network about their inability to use the current version of internet protocol, with a goal of minimal impact to RFC8925 and dual-stack clients. When implemented as designed, this method may improve supportability and user experience of IPv6-only deployments at FFRDCs.

Calculating beam extinction in a pulsed proton beam using FPGA-based peak detection

The Mu2e experiment at Fermilab imposes stringent requirements on the elimination of out-of-time beam in its pulsed proton beam, a requirement known as “extinction”. Utilizing a new μTCA-based FPGA data acquisition system, we recorded live particle data from scattered particles incident on an array of quartz Cherenkov radiators and photomultiplier tubes to measure the extinction in the inter-pulse gaps in the pulsed proton beam. Minuscule errors in the derived signal period can make a measurement of the extinction impossible, so after taking a Fourier transform, further optimizations on the period were done based on the assumption that the signal period is stable over the full time of the beam spill while it is being resonantly extracted. After these optimizations, the beam extinction was shown to be on the level of 10^3.

Booster Neutrino Beam operations and neutrino flux prediction

The Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) Line is used to produce neutrino beams for the 8 GeV Neutrino Program at Fermilab. This talk will provide a summary of the BNB operations and an estimate of the neutrino flux that is produced by the beamline. The talk will also summarize the work to upgrade the system which records the longitudinal structure of the primary proton beam that is delivered to BNB production target.

Colorado State University Extension Industrial Assessment Center

Since its inception in 1984, the Colorado State University Industrial Assessment Center has performed industrial assessments at more than 720 manufacturing facilities in Colorado, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming. From 2017 to 2019 there was a funding gap and the IAC shutdown. In 2020 through DOE extension funding the University relaunched the IAC as an extension center in order to provide assessments to underserved areas. Under this award, the CSU Industrial Assessment Center (IAC) was rebuilt with the help of student employees and the director. The CSU team experienced difficulty as the program was in the process of being restarted right as the 2020 pandemic hit. Nonetheless, the CSU IAC was instrumental in providing energy assessments to manufacturers in Colorado and Wyoming during the period of performance of 09/2019 – 12/2022. The Department of Energy's Industrial Assessment Centers (IACs) provide a valuable service to small and medium-sized manufacturers seeking to optimize their operations. These university-based centers offer no-cost, on-site assessments conducted by engineering faculty and students, analyzing energy consumption, production processes, and waste streams. They utilize advanced data acquisition systems to record operational data, and then use the data to create assessment recommendations. These recommendations form the foundation of the comprehensive energy report. The comprehensive report delivers actionable recommendations for enhancing energy efficiency, reducing waste, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving productivity, often identifying significant cost savings. Furthermore, IACs facilitate access to implementation grants, enabling the businesses to readily adopt these improvements. This program not only strengthens individual businesses but also contributes to national goals of training the next generation of energy experts, as well as increasing industrial competitiveness and reduced environmental impact.

Characterization of Precipitate Reactor Feed Tank (PRFT) Batches 15, 22, and 26 from the Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF)

The Savannah River Site (SRS) Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) processes a Monosodium Titanate/Sludge Solids (MST/SS) waste stream received from the Salt Waste Processing Facility (SWPF) via the Precipitate Reactor Feed Tank (PRFT). During processing, DWPF is required to provide evidence of compliance with the Waste Acceptance Product Specifications (WAPS) to ensure acceptance of their vitrified high-level waste (HLW) into the Civilian Radioactive Waste Management System. Production Records must document the constituents of the MST/SS material in the PRFT from each salt batch (StB) processed at SWPF. Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC) has requested Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) to analyze PRFT samples representing each SWPF salt batch for thirty-two radionuclides. Additionally, elemental analysis of PRFT slurry and MST/SS solids was performed to aid SRMC in further refinement of the inputs and assumptions used in future frit development and Material Tracking Program calculations. The analyses of PRFT Batches 15, 22, and 26, which corresponds to material from the processing of StB4, StB5, and StB7, respectively, are reported herein. The unwashed dried solids of the PRFT batches were found to be 86-87% MST. Additionally, the total sulfur values are well below the assumed 982 mg of sulfate/kg of PRFT slurry used in Material Tracking Program calculations.

Achievement in Beam Power Records for the NOvA Target System

We began updating the NOvA target system for 1-Mega Watt (1-MW) beam operation in 2017. Major changes include maintaining the quality of neutrino beams with reliable instrumentation, reducing instantaneous beam heating on the target, increasing cooling power to handle the high power beam, and controlling tritium water production rate. We successfully achieved a onehour beam power report of 1.018 MW in Summer 2024. This achievement marks an important milestone for Fermilab, demonstrating the capability of the accelerator complex to handle highintensity proton beams at a fast repetition rate. We are now prepared to proceed with a new accelerator upgrade plan, known as the Accelerator Complex Evolution - Main Injector Ramp and Targetry R&D (ACE-MIRT) to support future operates at beam power exceeding 2 MW for the Long Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) and Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). We present the improvement of the target system to exceed the beam power 1-MW.

A low speed wind tunnel test of the 0.050 scale NASA-JSC shuttle orbiter 089B to determine the longitudinal and lateral directional effects of control surface modifications

Wind tunnel tests to determine the longitudinal and lateral-directional effects of control surface modifications on the space shuttle orbiter aerodynamic characteristics are discussed. A total of 103 data runs were made which consisted of pitch runs through a range of zero to 28 degrees at a zero yaw angle and yaw runs from minus 6 to plus 6 degrees at various fixed pitch angles. At each data point, data from an internal strain gage balance was sampled with the digital data system. Also recorded were the model angles of pitch and yaw and the test section static pressure. Results are presented in the form of tabulated aerodynamic coefficient data about the model reference center.

Vibrational relaxation of carbon monoxide studied by two-wavelength infrared emission

Experimental results are presented for the vibrational relaxation of pure carbon monoxide behind incident shock waves over the temperature range 4000 to 6300 K. The data were obtained as infrared emission from the fundamental and overtone vibrational band systems (in some of the experiments the two-band systems were recorded simultaneously). The data are consistent with present theories for the vibrational relaxation of diatomic molecules and can be interpreted in terms of an initial Boltzmann vibrational distribution relaxing toward final equilibrium via a continuous sequence of intermediate Boltzmann distributions.
