Ferrimagnetic spin waves in honeycomb and triangular layers of Mn{sub 3}Si{sub 2}Te{sub 6}.

A detailed analysis of the ferrimagnetic ground state of Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 has been performed using inelastic neutron scattering. Although the proposed valence of the nominal Mn 2+ ions would have quenched orbital angular momentum, a significant exchange anisotropy exists in Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 . This apparent exchange anisotropy is a manifestation of a weak spin-orbit coupling in the layered material. We employ a detailed simulation of the spin-wave spectrum coupling traditional refinement of dispersion parameters to image analysis techniques, while including Monte Carlo simulations of the instrumental resolution to accurately identify the exchange couplings to the third nearest neighbor. An independent validation of our results is made by comparing our final Hamiltonian to heat capacity measurements.

Valence and magnetism in EuPd 3 S 4 and (Y, La) x Eu 1-x Pd 3 S 4

151 Eu Mössbauer spectroscopy shows that yttrium substitution in mixed-valent EuPd 3 S 4 drives the initial 50:50 mix of Eu 3+ and E 2+ towards pure Eu 2+ , whereas lanthanum substitution has the opposite effect, but only for substitution levels above 50%. Here, we find that total valence electron count and chemical pressure effects cannot account for the observed behavior; however, conserving the cell volume provides a consistent description of the changes in the Eu 2+ :Eu 3+ ratio. Remarkably, lanthanum substitution also leads to a clear transition from static mixed-valent behavior at lower temperatures to dynamic mixed-valent behavior at higher temperatures, with the onset temperature monotonically increasing with Eu content and extrapolating to a value of ~ 340 K for the pure EuPd 3 S 4 compound. Magnetic order persists at least as far as x=0.875 in both series, despite the drastic reduction in the amount of moment-carrying Eu 2+ ions.

Dark Energy Survey Year 3 results: Cosmology from cosmic shear and robustness to data calibration

This work, together with its companion paper, Secco, Samuroff et al., presents the Dark Energy Survey Year 3 cosmic shear measurements and cosmological constraints based on an analysis of over 100 million source galaxies. With the data spanning 4143 deg 2 on the sky, divided into four redshift bins, we produce the highest significance measurement of cosmic shear to date, with a signal-to-noise of 40. We conduct a blind analysis in the context of the ΛCDM model and find a 3% constraint of the clustering amplitude, S 8 ≡ σ 8 (Ω m /0.3) 0.5 = 0.759$^{+0.025}_{-0.023}$. A ΛCDM-Optimized analysis, which safely includes smaller scale information, yields a 2% precision measurement of S 8 = 0.772$^{+0.018}_{-0.017}$ that is consistent with the fiducial case. The two low-redshift measurements are statistically consistent with the Planck Cosmic Microwave Background result, however, both recovered S 8 values are lower than the high-redshift prediction by 2.3σ and 2.1σ (ρ-values of 0.02 and 0.05), respectively. The measurements are shown to be internally consistent across redshift bins, angular scales and correlation functions. The analysis is demonstrated to be robust to calibration systematics, with the S 8 posterior consistent when varying the choice of redshift calibration sample, the modeling of redshift uncertainty and methodology. Similarly, we find that the corrections included to account for the blending of galaxies shifts our best-fit S 8 by 0.5σ without incurring a substantial increase in uncertainty. We examine the limiting factors for the precision of the cosmological constraints and find observational systematics to be subdominant to the modeling of astrophysics. Specifically, we identify the uncertainties in modeling baryonic effects and intrinsic alignments as the limiting systematics.

Dark Energy Survey Year 3 results: Simulation-based cosmological inference with wavelet harmonics, scattering transforms, and moments of weak lensing mass maps. Validation on simulations

Beyond-two-point statistics contain additional information on cosmological as well as astrophysical and observational (systematics) parameters. In this methodology paper we provide an end-to-end simulationbased analysis of a set of Gaussian and non-Gaussian weak lensing statistics using detailed mock catalogs of the Dark Energy Survey (DES). Here, we implement: 1) second and third moments; 2) wavelet phase harmonics (WPH); 3) the scattering transform (ST). Our analysis is fully based on simulations, it spans a space of seven $νw$CDM cosmological parameters, and it forward models the most relevant sources of systematics of the data (masks, noise variations, clustering of the sources, intrinsic alignments, and shear and redshift calibration). We implement a neural network compression of the summary statistics, and we estimate the parameter posteriors using a likelihood-free-inference approach. We validate the pipeline extensively, and we find that WPH exhibits the strongest performance when combined with second moments, followed by ST, and then by third moments. The combination of all the different statistics further enhances constraints with respect to second moments, up to 25 percent, 15 percent, and 90 percent for S 8 , Ω m , and the figure-of-merit FoM S8;Ωm , respectively. We further find that non-Gaussian statistics improve constraints on w and on the amplitude of intrinsic alignment with respect to second moments constraints. The methodological advances presented here are suitable for application to Stage IV surveys from Euclid, Rubin-LSST, and Roman with additional validation on mock catalogs for each survey. In a companion paper we present an application to DES Year 3 data.

Toward UV models of kinetic mixing and portal matter. VII. A light dark photon in the 3 𝑐 ⁢3 𝐿 ⁢1 𝐴 ⁢1 𝐵 model

The kinetic mixing (KM) portal, by which the Standard Model (SM) photon mixes with a light dark photon arising from a new 𝑈⁢(1) 𝐷 gauge group, allows for the possibility of viable scenarios of sub-GeV thermal dark matter with appropriately suppressed couplings to the SM. This KM can only occur if particles having both SM and dark quantum numbers, here termed portal matter, also exist. The presence of such types of states and the strong suggestion of a need to embed 𝑈⁢(1) 𝐷 into a non-Abelian gauge structure not too far above the TeV scale based on the renormalization-group equation running of the 𝑈⁢(1)𝐷 gauge coupling is potentially indicative of an enlarged group linking together the visible and dark sectors. The gauge group 𝐺 = 𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(3) 𝑐 × 𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(3) 𝐿 × 𝑈⁢(1) 𝐴 × 𝑈⁢(1) 𝐵 = 3 𝑐 ⁢3 𝐿 ⁢1 𝐴 ⁢1 𝐵 is perhaps the simplest setup wherein the SM and dark interactions are partially unified in a non-Abelian fashion that is not a simple product group of the form 𝐺 = 𝐺 SM × 𝐺 𝐷 encountered frequently in earlier work. The present paper describes the implications and phenomenology of this type of setup.

Large Polarons as Key Quasiparticles in SrTiO 3 and SrTiO 3 -Based Heterostructures

Despite its simple structure and low degree of electronic correlation, SrTiO 3 (STO) features collective phenomena linked to charge transport and, ultimately, superconductivity, that are not yet fully explained. Thus, a better insight into the nature of the quasiparticles shaping the electronic and conduction properties of STO is needed. We studied the low-energy excitations of bulk STO and of the LaAlO 3 / SrTiO 3 two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) by Ti L 3 edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. In all samples, we find the hallmark of polarons in the form of intense d d + phonon excitations, and a decrease of the LO3-mode electron-phonon coupling when going from insulating to highly conducting STO single crystals and heterostructures. Overall, both results are attributed to the dynamic screening of the large polaron self-induced polarization, showing that the low-temperature physics of STO and STO-based 2DEGs is dominated by large polaron quasiparticles.

Comparative study of Minnesota functionals performance on ferroelectric BaTiO 3 and PbTiO 3

Density functional theory based simulations are the leading tool for the computational investigation of ferroelectrics and the parametrization of their classical potentials. However, the predictions often depend strongly on the exchange correlation functional. The most popular choices, LDA and GGA, tend to underestimate or overestimate some structural, electric, and energy properties. These impede development of highly accurate classical potentials that extend the reach of first-principles simulations to finite temperatures and realistic sizes. In this work, we investigate the performance of recently developed Minnesota exchange correlation functionals on prototypical ferroelectrics BaTiO 3 , and PbTiO 3 , in comparison with some popular ones. We find that there exists strong correlation between predictions for some properties (tetragonality, phase energy difference, and polarization) by different functionals. Along the correlation line, we find a range of functionals (including some from the Minnesota suite) whose predictions fall in between those of LDA and GGA and, therefore, offer an improvement. A way to relatively rank functional performance with respect to chosen benchmarks is proposed and applied to identify the top performers for BaTiO 3 and PbTiO 3 . Here, the performance is found to be material dependent. Therefore, we propose that the performance assessment carried out in this work is employed to "screen" functionals prior to their use on ferroelectrics. Quick and computationally inexpensive, it is likely to lead to improved descriptions, especially for classical potential parametrization. The Minnesota functional suite is found to be suitable for this task.

Interface magnetism and anomalous Hall effect in La 0.7 ⁢Sr 0.3⁢ Mn⁢O 3 /SrIr⁢O 3 bilayers

Epitaxial interfaces combining 3d and 5d transition metal oxides are a fertile playground to examine the interplay between topology and electron correlations. In this work, we explore magnetism and transport of bilayers combining ferromagnetic La 0.7⁢ Sr 0.3⁢ Mn⁢O 3 and the strong spin-orbit coupling material SrIr⁢O 3 . We have found an interfacial magnetic proximity effect driving an intrinsic contribution to the anomalous Hall effect of topological origin. The interfacial proximity interaction is enabled by the Mn-O-Ir bonding reconstruction and depends on layer sequence. While bilayers with the La 0.7⁢ Sr 0.3 ⁢Mn⁢O 3 on top featuring a robust Mn magnetism at the interface show the intrinsic AHE contribution, it is absent in bilayers with the inverted layer sequence (SrIr⁢O 3 layer on top) showing strongly suppressed magnetism at the interface. These results illustrate the leading role of interfacial atomic reconstructions on the interplay between topology and correlations at 3d/5d oxide interfaces. This finding may be of interest in future oxide topological spintronics and spin-orbitronics.

Phase formation in the CaO–Al 2 O 3 –ZnO system as an analogue to CaO–Al 2 O 3 –MgO in spinel containing refractories

Recently, gahnite (ZnAl 2 O 4 ) is gaining attraction as a potential refractory ceramic because of the similarity of its structure and properties with those of magnesium aluminate (MgAl 2 O 4 ) spinel refractories. Formation of MgO and hibonite solid solution (CaMg x Al 12−x O 19−0.5x ; 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.18), CAM-I (Ca 2 Mg 2−3x Al 28+2x O 46 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.3), and CAM-II (CaMg 2−3x Al 16+2x O 27 , 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.2) phases with platelet and interlocking microstructure in the CaO–Al 2 O 3 –MgO ternary system significantly enhances the high temperature mechanical properties of refractory castables. The CaO–Al 2 O 3 –ZnO ternary system has been studied, for the first time to our knowledge, in a selected compositional range with reference to the CaO–Al 2 O 3 –MgO system from 1650°C to 1700°C. The formation of ZnO and hibonite solid solution (CaZn x Al 12−x O 19−0.5x ; 0 < x < 0.18), CAZ-I (Ca 2 Zn 2−3x Al 28+2x O 46 ; 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.3), and CAZ-II (CaZn 2−3x Al 16+2x O 27 ; 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.2) phases with platelet and interlocking morphology have been found. The crystal structures and lattice parameters of ZnO and hibonite solid solution, CAZ-I, and CAZ-II are comparable, respectively, with MgO and hibonite solid solution, CAM-I, and CAM-II. Furthermore, CAZ-I and CAZ-II phases also form due to reaction between hibonite (CaO·6Al 2 O 3 ) and ZnAl 2 O 4 .

Highly selective Si 3 N 4 /SiO 2 etching using an NF 3 /N 2 /O 2 /H 2 remote plasma. II. Surface reaction mechanism

Developing processes for highly selective etching of silicon nitride (Si 3 N 4 ) with respect to silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) is a major priority for semiconductor fabrication processing. In this paper and in Paper I [Volynets et al., J. Vac. Sci. Technol. A 38, 023007 (2020)], mechanisms are discussed for highly selective Si3N4 etching in a remote plasma based on experimental and theoretical investigations. The Si 3 N 4 /SiO 2 etch selectivity of up to 380 was experimentally produced using a remote plasma sustained in NF 3 /N 2 /O 2 /H 2 mixtures. A selectivity strongly depends on the flow rate of H 2 , an effect attributed to the formation of HF molecules in vibrationally excited states that accelerate etching reactions. Based on experimental measurements and zero-dimensional plasma simulations, an analytical etching model was developed for etch rates as a function of process parameters. Reaction rates and sticking coefficients were provided by quantum chemistry models and also fitted to the experimental results. Etch rates from the analytical model show good agreement with the experimental results and demonstrate why certain etchants accelerate or inhibit the etch process. In particular, the modeling shows the important role of HF molecules in the first vibrationally excited state [HF( v = 1)] in achieving high Si 3 N 4 /SiO 2 selectivity.

3,3’-Diindolylmethane Exhibits Significant Metabolism After Oral Dosing in Humans

3,3’-Diindolylmethane (DIM), a major phytochemical derived from ingestion of cruciferous vegetables such as Brussels sprouts, is also a dietary supplement. In preclinical models, DIM is an effective cancer chemopreventive agent and has been studied in a number of clinical trials. Previous pharmacokinetic studies in preclinical and clinical models have not reported DIM metabolites in plasma or urine following oral dosing and the pharmacological actions of DIM on target tissues is assumed to be solely via the parent compound. Seven subjects (6 males and 1 female) ranging from 26-65 years of age, on a cruciferous vegetable-restricted diet prior to and during the study, took 2 BioResponse-DIM® 150 mg capsules (45.3 mg DIM/capsule) in the evening for one week with a final dose the morning of the first blood draw. A complete time course was performed with plasma and urine collected over 48 hours and analyzed by UPLC-MS/MS. In addition to parent DIM, two mono-hydroxylated (2-ox- and 3-methylenehydroxy-DIM) and 1 dihydroxylated (3-methylenehydroxy-2-ox-DIM) metabolites, along with their sulfate and glucuronide conjugates, were present in both plasma and urine. The results reported here are indicative of significant phase 1 and phase 2 metabolism and differ from previous pharmacokinetic studies in rodents and humans which reported only parent DIM present following oral administration.

Biochemical characterization of Fsa16295Glu from “Fervidibacter sacchari,” the first hyperthermophilic GH50 with β-1,3-endoglucanase activity and founding member of the subfamily GH50_3

The aerobic hyperthermophile “Fervidibacter sacchari” catabolizes diverse polysaccharides and is the only cultivated member of the class “Fervidibacteria” within the phylum Armatimonadota. It encodes 117 putative glycoside hydrolases (GHs), including two from GH family 50 (GH50). In this study, we expressed, purified, and functionally characterized one of these GH50 enzymes, Fsa16295Glu. We show that Fsa16295Glu is a β-1,3-endoglucanase with optimal activity on carboxymethyl curdlan (CM-curdlan) and only weak agarase activity, despite most GH50 enzymes being described as β-agarases. The purified enzyme has a wide temperature range of 4–95°C (optimal 80°C), making it the first characterized hyperthermophilic representative of GH50. The enzyme is also active at a broad pH range of at least 5.5–11 (optimal 6.5–10). Fsa16295Glu possesses a relatively high k cat /K M of 1.82 × 10 7 s-1 M-1 with CM-curdlan and degrades CM-curdlan nearly completely to sugar monomers, indicating preferential hydrolysis of glucans containing β-1,3 linkages. Finally, a phylogenetic analysis of Fsa16295Glu and all other GH50 enzymes revealed that Fsa16295Glu is distant from other characterized enzymes but phylogenetically related to enzymes from thermophilic archaea that were likely acquired horizontally from “Fervidibacteria.” Given its functional and phylogenetic novelty, we propose that Fsa16295Glu represents a new enzyme subfamily, GH50_3.

Nucleation and Antiphase Twin Control in Bi 2 Se 3 via Step‐Terminated Al 2 O 3 Substrates

The epitaxial synthesis of high-quality 2D layered materials is an essential driver of both fundamental physics studies and technological applications. Bi 2 Se 3 , a prototypical 2D layered topological insulator, is sensitive to defects imparted during the growth, either thermodynamically or due to the film-substrate interaction. Here, in this study, it is shown that step-terminated Al 2 O 3 substrates with a high miscut angle (3°) can effectively suppress a particular hard-to-mitigate defect, the antiphase twin. Systematic investigations across a range of growth temperatures and substrate miscut angles confirm that atomic step edges act as preferential nucleation sites, stabilizing a single twin domain. First-principles calculations suggest that there is a significant energy barrier for twin boundary formation at step edges, supporting the experimental observations. Detailed structural characterization indicates that this twin-selectivity is lost through the mechanism of the 2D layers overgrowing the step edges, leading to higher twin density as the thickness increases. These findings highlight the complex energy landscape unique to 2D materials that is driven by the interplay between substrate properties, nucleation dynamics, and defect formation, and overcoming and controlling these are critical to improve material quality for quantum and electronic applications.

Gallium‐Doping Effects on Structure, Lithium‐Conduction, and Thermochemical Stability of Li 7‐3 x Ga x La 3 Zr 2 O 12 Garnet‐Type Electrolytes

Abstract One of the most promising electrolytes for all‐solid‐state lithium batteries is Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 . Previously, their thermodynamic stability, Li‐ion conductivity, and structural features induced by Ga‐doping have not been empirically determined or correlated. Here, their interplay was examined for Li 7−3 x Ga x La 3 Zr 2 O 12 with target x Ga=0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.00 atoms per formula unit (apfu). Formation enthalpies, obtained with calorimetry and found to be exothermic at all compositions, linearly decreased in stability with increased x Ga. At dilute x Ga substitution, the formation enthalpy curve shifted stepwise endothermically, and the conductivity increased to a maximum, coinciding with 0.529 Ga apfu. This correlated with percolation threshold analysis (0.558 Ga apfu). Further substitution (0.787 Ga apfu) produced a large decrease in the stability and conductivity due to a large increase in point defects and blocked Li‐migration pathways. At x Ga=1.140 apfu, a small exothermic shift was related to defect cluster organization extending the Li hopping distance and decreased Li‐ion conductivity.

Long-term effects of cycle time and volume exchange ratio on poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) production from food waste digestate by Haloferax mediterranei cultivated in sequencing batch reactors for 450 days

Food waste digestate was fed into a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) for Haloferax mediterranei (HM) to produce poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV). This SBR was operated uninterruptedly for 450 days to test its stability, during which the cycle time and volume exchange ratio were varied to understand their impacts on the PHBV fermentation performance under ranged organic loading rates (OLR). Results showed that 1) PHBV productivity was proportional to OLR of food waste digestate; 2) substrate and product inhibitions were two limiting factors constraining substrate utilization and PHBV yields; 3) PHBV titer was dependent on the hydraulic retention time of the SBR while a volume exchange ratio lower than 0.5 is unfavorable due to the product inhibitor accumulation. Furthermore, this study for the first time demonstrated that the long-term stability of food waste-fed PHBV production by HM and revealed that inhibition effects could be barriers in SBR limiting the full-scale application of the technology.

In situ investigation of conducting interface formation in $\mathrm{LaAlO_3}$/$\mathrm{SrTiO_3}$ heterostructure

The high-mobility conducting interface (CI) between LaAlO 3 (LAO) and SrTiO 3 (STO) has revealed many fascinating phenomena, including exotic magnetism and superconductivity. But, the formation mechanism of the CI has not been conclusively explained. Here, using in situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we elucidated the mechanisms for the CI formation. In as-grown samples, we observed a built-in potential (V bi ) proportional to the polar LAO thickness starting from the first unit cell (UC) with CI formation appearing above 3 UCs. However, we found that the V bi is removed by synchrotron ultraviolet (UV)-irradiation; The built-in potential is recovered by oxygen gas (O 2 (g))-exposure. Furthermore, after UV-irradiation, the CI appears even below 3UC of LAO. Here, our results demonstrate not only the V bi -driven CI formation in as-grown LAO/STO, but also a new route to control of the interface state by UV lithographic patterning or other surface modification.
