Temperature Control of Avalanche Photodiode Using Thermoelectric Cooler

Avalanche photodiodes (APDS) are quantum optical detectors that are used for visible and near infrared optical detection applications. Although APDs are compact, rugged, and have an internal gain mechanism that is suitable for low light intensity; their responsivity, and therefore their output, is strongly dependent on the device temperature. Thermoelectric coolers (TEC) offers a suitable solution to this problem. A TEC is a solid state cooling device, which can be controlled by changing its current. TECs are compact and rugged, and they can precisely control the temperature to within 0.1 C with more than a 150 C temperature gradient between its surfaces. In this Memorandum, a proportional integral (PI) temperature controller for APDs using a TEC is discussed. The controller is compact and can successfully cool the APD to almost 0 C in an ambient temperature environment of up to 27 C.

Thermoelectric Products

Instead of bulky coils and compressors used in conventional refrigeration systems, UST design engineers drew on thermo-electric technology. UST's precision temperature chambers (PTC's) feature small thermoelectric modules that measure not much more than 1 square inch and operate on unique phenomenon of heat exchange. When electric current flows through specialized metallic crystals, heat is produced; when current direction is reversed cooling is produced.

Thermal Performance of a Multi-Evaporator Loop Heat Pipe with Thermal Masses and Thermoelectric Coolers

This paper describes thermal performance of a loop heat pipe (LHP) with two evaporators and two condensers in ambient testing. Each evaporator has an outer diameter of 15mm and a length of 76mm, and has an integral compensation chamber (CC). An aluminum mass of 500 grams is attached to each evaporator to simulate the instrument mass. A thermoelectric cooler (TEC) is installed on each CC to provide heating as well as cooling for CC temperature control. A flow regulator is installed in the condenser section to prevent vapor from going back to the evaporators in the event that one of the condensers is fully utilized. Ammonia was used as the working fluid. Tests conducted included start-up, power cycle, heat load sharing, sink temperature cycle, operating temperature control with TECs, and capillary limit tests. Experimental data showed that the loop could start with a heat load of less than 10W even with added thermal masses. The loop operated stably with even and uneven evaporator heat loads, and even and uneven condenser sink temperatures. The operating temperature could be controlled within +/- 0.5K of the set point temperature using either or both TECs, and the required TEC control heater power was less than 2W under most test conditions. Heat load sharing between the two evaporators was also successfully demonstrated. The loop had a heat transport capability of 120W to 140W, and could recover from a dry-out when the heat load was reduced. The 500-gram aluminum mass on each evaporator had a negligible effect on the loop operation. Existing LHPs servicing orbiting spacecraft have a single evaporator with an outer diameter of about 25mm. Important performance characteristics demonstrated by this LHP included: 1) Operation of an LHP with 15mm diameter evaporators; 2) Robustness and reliability of an LHP with multiple evaporators and multiple condensers under various test conditions; 3) Heat load sharing among LHP evaporators; 4) Effectiveness of TECs in controlling the LHP operating temperature; and 5 ) Effectiveness of the flow regulator in preventing vapor from going back the evaporators.

Skutterudites for Thermoelectric Applications

ct given. Summary - This paper says an exploratory search at JPL for new, high-performance thermoelectric materials identified a skutterudite family. Skutterudites might be of interest for electronics, and other applications. Several skutterudites have shown very interesting properties: very low thermal conductivity, very high p-type mobility values, large n-type Seebeck values, large number of isostructural materials. A systematic investigation of skutterudites found: it's necessary to understand trends in properties, and the goal should be to determine the best approach for high ZT.

Optimization of Hot-Pressed n-Type SiGe/GaP and p-Type SiGe/B Thermoelectric Materials

A comprehensive experimental and theoretical work has been conducted in order to optimize the thermoelectric properties of Si_(80)Ge_(20) materials and reach the goal of a combined figure of merit value of 0.85x10^(-3) K^(-1) averaged over a 600-1000 C temperature range. Improvement for the n-type material has been obtained by determining the optimum amounts of gallium and phosphorus dopants necessary to achieve optimum carrier mobility and concentration. The emphasis is now on the consistent reproducibility of these results through understanding and control of the hot-pressing parameters relating microstructure and composition to the transport properties. The optimum doping level has now been firmly established for p-type materials, and work is concentrating on the reduction in thermal conductivity. BN ultra fine particles have been successfully incorporated into fully dense samples and have resulted in desired improvement of the figure of merit...

Loop Heat Pipe Operation with Thermoelectric Converters and Coupling Blocks

This paper presents theoretical and experimental studies on using thermoelectric converters (TECs) and coupling blocks to control the operating temperature of a miniature loop heat pipes (MLHP). The MLHP has two parallel evaporators and two parallel condensers, and each evaporator has its own integral compensation chamber (CC). A TEC is attached to each CC, and connected to the evaporator via a copper thermal strap. The TEC can provide both heating and cooling to the CC, therefore extending the LHP operating temperature over a larger range of the evaporator heat load. A bi-polar power supply is used for the TEC operation. The bipolar power supply automatically changes the direction of the current to the TEC, depending on whether the CC requires heating or cooling, to maintain the CC temperature at the desired set point. The TEC can also enhance the startup success by maintaining a constant CC temperature during the start-up transient. Several aluminum coupling blocks are installed between the vapor line and liquid line. The coupling blocks serve as a heat exchanger which preheats the cold returning liquid so as to reduce the amount of liquid subcooling, and hence the power required to maintain the CC at the desired set point temperature. This paper focuses on the savings of the CC control heater power afforded by the TECs when compared to traditional electric heaters. Tests were conducted by varying the evaporator power, the condenser sink temperature, the CC set point temperature, the number of coupling blocks, and the thermal conductance of the thermal strap. Test results show that the TECs are able to control the CC temperature within k0.5K under all test conditions, and the required TEC heater power is only a fraction of the required electric heater power.

Thermoelectric Properties of Self Assemble TiO2/SnO2 Nanocomposites

Recent advances in improving efficiency of thermoelectric materials are linked to nanotechnology. Thermodynamically driven spinodal decomposition was utilized to synthesize bulk nanocomposites. TiO2/SnO2 system exhibits a large spinodal region, ranging from 15 to 85 mole % TiO2. The phase separated microstructures are stable up to 1400 C. Semiconducting TiO2/SnO2 powders were synthesized by solid state reaction between TiO2 and SnO2. High density samples were fabricated by pressureless sintering. Self assemble nanocomposites were achieved by annealing at 1000 to 1350 C. X-ray diffraction reveal phase separation of (Ti(x)Sn(1-x))O2 type phases. The TiO2/SnO2 nanocomposites exhibit n-type behavior; a power factor of 70 (mu)W/m sq K at 1000 C has been achieved with penta-valent doping. Seebeck, thermal conductivity, electrical resistivity and microstructure will be discussed in relation to composition and doping.

Using Thermoelectric Converters for Loop Heat Pipe Operating Temperature Control

This paper describes an experimental study to investigate the effectiveness of using thermoelectric converters (TECs) to control the loop heat pipe (LHP) operating temperature. Tests were conducted on an LHP having two evaporators and two condensers. Each evaporator has its own integral compensation chamber (CC). One side of the TEC is attached to the CC, and the other side is connected to the evaporator through a copper thermal strap. A bi-polar power supply is used to provide the power for the operation of each TEC. The bipolar supply will automatic change the direction of the current to the TEC depending on whether the CC requires heating or cooling in order to maintain its temperature at the desired set point. When cooling the CC, the heat pumped by the TEC plus the power needed to operate the TEC is dissipated to the evaporator, and is ultimately transmitted to the condenser. When heating the CC, the TEC can draw heat from the evaporator to supplement the required control heater power. Test results showed that the TEC could control the LHP operating temperature within h1K of the set point temperature. The control heater power required for TEC operation was also much less than that of using electrical heaters.
