Piecewise linear approximation for hereditary control problems

Finite dimensional approximations are presented for linear retarded functional differential equations by use of discontinuous piecewise linear functions. The approximation scheme is applied to optimal control problems when a quadratic cost integral has to be minimized subject to the controlled retarded system. It is shown that the approximate optimal feedback operators converge to the true ones both in case the cost integral ranges over a finite time interval as well as in the case it ranges over an infinite time interval. The arguments in the latter case rely on the fact that the piecewise linear approximations to stable systems are stable in a uniform sense. This feature is established using a vector-component stability criterion in the state space R(n) x L(2) and the favorable eigenvalue behavior of the piecewise linear approximations.

Spacecraft flight control with the new phase space control law and optimal linear jet select

An autopilot designed for rotation and translation control of a rigid spacecraft is described. The autopilot uses reaction control jets as control effectors and incorporates a six-dimensional phase space control law as well as a linear programming algorithm for jet selection. The interaction of the control law and jet selection was investigated and a recommended configuration proposed. By means of a simulation procedure the new autopilot was compared with an existing system and was found to be superior in terms of core memory, central processing unit time, firings, and propellant consumption. But it is thought that the cycle time required to perform the jet selection computations might render the new autopilot unsuitable for existing flight computer applications, without modifications. The new autopilot is capable of maintaining attitude control in the presence of a large number of jet failures.

Development of control systems for space shuttle vehicles, volume 1

Control of winged two-stage space shuttle vehicles was investigated. Control requirements were determined and systems capable of meeting these requirements were synthesized. Control requirements unique to shuttles were identified. It is shown that these requirements can be satisfied by conventional control logics. Linear gain schedule controllers predominate. Actuator saturations require nonlinear compensation in some of the control systems.

Nonlinear analysis of a family of LC tuned inverters

A family of four dc-to-square-wave LC tuned inverters are analyzed using singular point. Limit cycles and waveshape characteristics are given for three modes of oscillation: quasi-harmonic, relaxation, and discontinuous. An inverter in which the avalanche breakdown of the transistor emitter-to-base junction occurs is discussed and the starting characteristics of this family of inverters are presented. The LC tuned inverters are shown to belong to a family of inverters with a common equivalent circuit consisting of only three 'series' elements: a five-segment piecewise-linear current-controlled resistor, linear inductor, and linear capacitor.

An implicit adaptation algorithm for a linear model reference control system

This paper presents a stable implicit adaptation algorithm for model reference control. The constraints for stability are found using Lyapunov's second method and do not depend on perfect model following between the system and the reference model. Methods are proposed for satisfying these constraints without estimating the parameters on which the constraints depend.

The linear quadratic optimal control problem for infinite dimensional systems over an infinite horizon - Survey and examples

Available published results are surveyed for a special class of infinite-dimensional control systems whose evolution is characterized by a semigroup of operators of class C subscript zero. Emphasis is placed on an approach that clarifies the system-theoretic relationship among controllability, stabilizability, stability, and the existence of a solution to an associated operator equation of the Riccati type. Formulation of the optimal control problem is reviewed along with the asymptotic behavior of solutions to a general system of equations and several theorems concerning L2 stability. Examples are briefly discussed which involve second-order parabolic systems, first-order hyperbolic systems, and distributed boundary control.

Reduced order feedback control equations for linear time and frequency domain analysis

An algorithm was developed which can be used to obtain the equations. In a more general context, the algorithm computes a real nonsingular similarity transformation matrix which reduces a real nonsymmetric matrix to block diagonal form, each block of which is a real quasi upper triangular matrix. The algorithm works with both defective and derogatory matrices and when and if it fails, the resultant output can be used as a guide for the reformulation of the mathematical equations that lead up to the ill conditioned matrix which could not be block diagonalized.

Simultaneous structure/control optimization of large flexible spacecraft

This paper presents an approach to the simultaneous optimal design of a structure and control system for large flexible spacecrafts based on realistic objective function and constraints. The weight or total cost of structure and control system is minimized subject to constraints on the magnitude of response to a given disturbance involving both rigid-body and elastic modes. A nested optimization technique is developed to solve the combined problem. As an example, simple beam-like spacecraft under a steady-state white-noise disturbance force is investigated and some results of optimization are presented. In the numerical examples, the stiffness distribution, the location of controller and the control gains are optimized. Direct feedback control and linear quadratic optimal control laws are used with both inertial and non-inertial disturbing force. It is shown that the total cost is sensitive to the overall structural stiffness so that a simultaneous optimization of the structure and control system is indeed useful.

Linear estimation and control studies of vibration suppression of SCOLE flexible mast

A Kalman filter and a controller are presented for vibration suppression of the Spacecraft Control Laboratory Experiment flexible mast mounted in the cantilevered configuration. Mode shapes and frequencies of the structure obtained from a finite element analysis are used to compute the controller and filter gains. The paper presents results and discussion from simulation and experimental studies. Comparison of experimental results with those obtained by simulation show close agreement.

Linear decentralized learning control

The new field of learning control develops controllers that learn to improve their performance at executing a given task, based on experience performing this task. The simplest forms of learning control are based on the same concept as integral control, but operating in the domain of the repetitions of the task. This paper studies the use of such controllers in a decentralized system, such as a robot with the controller for each link acting independently. The basic result of the paper is to show that stability of the learning controllers for all subsystems when the coupling between subsystems is turned off, assures stability of the decentralized learning in the coupled system, provided that the sample time in the digital learning controller is sufficiently short.
