Plant tissue and the color infrared record

Green plant tissue should not be considered as having a uniguely high near-infrared reflectance but rather a low visual reflectance. Leaf tissue without chloroplasts appears to reflect well both visual and near infrared wavelengths. The sensitometry of color infrared film is such that a spectral imbalance strongly favoring infrared reflection is necessary to yield a red record. It is the absorption of visual light by chlorophyll that creates the imbalance that makes the typical red record for plants possible. Reflectance measurements of leaves that have been chemically blanched or which have gone into natural chloride decline strongly suggests that it is the rise in the visual reflectance that is most important in removing the imbalance and degrading the red CIR record. The role of water in leaves appears to be that of rendering epidermal membranes translucent so that the underlying chlorophyll controls the reflection rather than the leaf surface.

Investigation of an electronic image enhancer for radiographs

Radiographs of nuclear and aerospace components were studied with a closed-circuit television system to determine the advantages of electronic enhancement in radiographic nondestructive evaluation. The radiographic images were examined on a television monitor under various degrees of magnification and enhancement. The enhancement was accomplished by generating a video signal whose amplitude is proportional to the rate of change of density. Points, lines, edges, and other density variations that are faintly registered in the original image are rendered in sharp relief. Examples of the applications of this mode of enhancement are discussed together with the system's dynamic response and resolution.

Development of self extinguishing Durette and/or Nomex fabric

A treatment was developed for Nomex or Durette fabric which renders it self-extinguishing in a 70% oxygen, 30% nitrogen atmosphere at 5 psia. The treatment does not degrade the physical and textile properties of the fabric excessively and does not outgas or have an objectional odor. The treatment is permanent and does not lose its fire protecting qualities after laundering. The treatment utilizes a mixture of formaldehyde, phosphorous acid, and tri-methyl phosphate in methanol. The cloth to be treated is held in a boiling solution of the above reagents for 24 hours, removed, air dried, and then heated to 120 C in a circulating air oven for 90 minutes. The treatment turns Nomex a pale yellow but does not have an appreciable effect on drape or hand. One inch wide strips of treated cloth failed in tension at 192 lbs, while untreated controls broke at 215 lbs. To remove any excess reagents, the cloth is processed in a home laundry through one wash and dry cycle without the use of any detergents. The thermal shrinkage of the treated material is 23% compared to a control of 40% for unwashed Stern Nomex HT 90-40.

Design of automata theory of cubical complexes with applications to diagnosis and algorithmic description

The following problems are considered: (1) methods for development of logic design together with algorithms, so that it is possible to compute a test for any failure in the logic design, if such a test exists, and developing algorithms and heuristics for the purpose of minimizing the computation for tests; and (2) a method of design of logic for ultra LSI (large scale integration). It was discovered that the so-called quantum calculus can be extended to render it possible: (1) to describe the functional behavior of a mechanism component by component, and (2) to compute tests for failures, in the mechanism, using the diagnosis algorithm. The development of an algorithm for the multioutput two-level minimization problem is presented and the program MIN 360 was written for this algorithm. The program has options of mode (exact minimum or various approximations), cost function, cost bound, etc., providing flexibility.

NASTRAN thermal analyzer: A general purpose finite element heat transfer computer program

The program not only can render temperature distributions in solids subjected to various thermal boundary conditions, including effects of diffuse-gray thermal radiation, but is fully compatible in capacity and in the finite-element model representation with that of its structural counterpart in the NASTRAN system. The development history of the finite-element approach for determining temperatures is summarized. The scope of analysis capability, program structure, features, and limitations are given with the objective of providing NASTRAN users with an overall veiw of the NASTRAN thermal analyzer.

Multiband photography - Forestry and agricultural applications.

The usefulness of multiband photography in forestry and agricultural applications was evaluated by a large group of skilled photo interpreters within four California test sites. Environmental parameters selected included crop types, forest vegetation types, and tree species composition. Quantitative analyses were made of the interpretability of (1) multiband black and white photos viewed separately, (2) multiband black and white photos combined into true and false color composites, and (3) color and color infrared photos obtained simultaneously with the multiband black and white photography. Tests indicated that multiband photography consistently yielded higher interpretation accuracies than any types of single-band photography. Black and white multiband photos which were properly procured and displayed as false-color composite imagery in all cases rendered as much (or as little) information as conventional tri-emulsion color or infrared color film.

Composite seals for liquid hydrogen and nuclear radiation environments.

Description of plastic composite seals for service in a liquid-hydrogen and nuclear-radiation environment. The radiation-resistant aromatic heterocyclic class of polymers, including polyimide, polybenzimidazole, and polyquinoxaline, were evaluated for this application. The seal developed is based on a design involving a resin-starved laminate consisting of alternating layers of woven glass fabric and polymer film. This design imparts a mechanical spring characteristic to the seal, resulting in essentially complete elastic recovery when unloaded, and eliminates cold flow. Encapsulating techniques employing the polyquinoxaline polymer were developed which rendered the seal impervious to liquid hydrogen. The seals were tested before and after gamma irradiation up to 10 to the 10th ergs/g. Load/deflection and leakage tests were performed over a temperature range from -423 through +500 F.

Fluorescence activated cell sorting.

An instrument has been developed for sorting biological cells. The cells are rendered differentially fluorescent and incorporated into a small liquid stream illuminated by a laser beam. The cells pass sequentially through the beam, and fluorescent light from the cells gives rise to electrical signals. The stream is broken into a series of uniform size drops downstream of the laser. The cell signals are used to give appropriate electrostatic charges to drops containing the cells. The drops then pass between two charged plates and are deflected to appropriate containers. The system has proved capable of providing fractions containing large numbers of viable cells highly enriched in a particular functional type.

Holographic nondestructive testing with impact excitation.

Review of some experimental results of bond flaw detection in composite materials by holographic recording of the surface of samples subjected to mechanical impact. The resulting deformation of the samples recorded in a sequence of double exposure holograms at increasingly longer time intervals after impact renders the presence of flaws observable. A proposed deformation enhancement technique increases detection sensitivity and is helpful in visualizing smaller flaws.

Application of remote sensing in the study of vegetation and soils in Idaho

The author has identified the following significant results. Comparison of ERTS-1 imagery and USGS 1:250,000 scale maps of study areas with known ground points revealed significant map errors. These errors were sufficient to render impractical the projection of ERTS-1 imagery directly onto maps of the area. Marked differences were found in the delineation of ground features by different MSS bands. Generally, Band 4 was least useful, while Band 5 proved valuable for indicating patterns of native vegetation, cultivated areas - both dry and irrigated, lava fields, drainage basins, and deep bodies of water. Band 6 was better for landforms and drainages and for shallow bodies of water than Band 5 but inferior for indicating patterns in native vegetation and most types of cultivated land. Band 7 was best of all for indicating lava flows, water bodies, and landform features. Use of a additive color viewer-projector aided greatly in separation of images. A combination of Bands 5 and 7 with appropriate color filters proved best for separating most types of native vegetation and cultivated crops. Landform features and water bodies also showed well with this combination. The addition of Band 4 imagery to these further enhanced the identification of semi-dormant vegetation.

Evaluation of the potentials of the ERTS techniques for geological mapping purposes

The author has identified the following significant results. Preliminary analysis of the full frame images shows the following: (1) The techniques employed were found suitable for study purposes. (2) The positional accuracy of the system corrected bulk processed MSS images is about 100-400 m. (3) Drainage is well depicted and morphotectonic features could be recognized. (4) Water bodies are clearly shown in MSS band 7. (5) Major roads, railway lines, and large towns are more or less detectable on bands 6 and 7. (6) Vegetation and agricultural areas are recognizable at many places. (7) Major rock formation boundaries, in general, are more or less clear. (8) Some of the structural trends including folded and linear structural elements are clear. (9) MSS bands 5 and 7 appear to be most useful for visual analysis. (10) Quick look analysis suggests that regional geological mapping on ERTS-1 imagery of the study area will be probably quite feasible. However, detailed analysis, visual and quantitative, on subframes, which is under progress may render more significant results.

Infectivity and egg production of Nematospiroides dubius as affected by space flight and ultraviolet irradiation

Nematospiroides dubius was tested to determine the infective potential of the third stage larvae and the egg-production and egg-viability rates of the resulting adults after they are exposed to space flight and solar ultraviolet irradiation. The results are indicative that space-flown larvae exposed to solar ultraviolet irradiation were rendered noninfective in C57 mice, whereas flight control larvae that received no solar ultraviolet irradiation matured at the same rate as the ground control larvae. However, depressed egg viability was evident in the flight control larvae.

Parasitic suppressing circuit

A circuit for suppressing parasitic oscillations across an inductor operating in a resonant mode is described. The circuit includes a switch means and resistive means connected serially across the inductor. A unidirectional resistive-capacitive network is also connected across the inductor and to the switch means to automatically render the switch means conducting when inductive current through the inductor ceases to flow.

Misalignment estimation software system

A system of computer software, spacecraft, and ground system activity is described that enables spacecraft startrackers and inertial assemblies to be aligned and calibrated from the ground after the spacecraft has achieved orbit. The system generates in the uplink flow an exercise designed to render misalignments visible, and sends the exercise to the spacecraft where the spacecraft inserts the misalignment into the information in the form of attitude sensor error. The information is downlinked for processing into misalignment estimates to be used for correcting spacecraft model at data base.
