Technology for satellite power conversion

The dipole pattern of the antenna was confirmed and work on the MOM diode began. The antenna - detector structure was modified and the measurement apparatus reconfigured to permit precise antenna pattern measurements. Fabrication of the MOM diode was initiated after antenna action from the new structures was observed. A refined antenna structure was developed. The previous antenna design allowed currents induced by the incident radiation in the bonding wires to flow through the bolometer. The detector was thus responding to both the antenna and bonding wire currents. A low pass filter was added to the antenna structure to improve the detection scheme. The new design uses an interdigitated capacitor to prevent the induced current in the bonding wires from flowing through the detection element.

Space infrared telescope facility (SIRTF) focal plane

The Infrared Array Camera (IRAC), Multiband Imaging Photometer (MIP), and the Infrared Spectrometer (IRS) of the Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) are described. The configuration and capabilities of the SIRTF are discussed. The small silicon array module, the germanium array module, and bolometer module of MIP, which is designed to provide sensitivity limited only by natural background and telescope emissions over the 3-200 micron spectral range, and allow diffraction limited imaging, super resolution techniques, mapping, and surveying, are examined. The objectives and design of the IRAC, which is constructed for two-dimensional photometry and imaging over a wavelength region from 2-30 microns and to perform extragalactic, galactic and solar system astronomy, are studied. The use of the IRS to study the dynamical and physical phenomena of the universe in the 2.5-200 micron range is analyzed.

Proceedings of the Second Infrared Detector Technology Workshop

The workshop focused on infrared detector, detector array, and cryogenic electronic technologies relevant to low-background space astronomy. Papers are organized into the following categories: discrete infrared detectors and readout electronics; advanced bolometers; intrinsic integrated infrared arrays; and extrinsic integrated infrared arrays. Status reports on the Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) and Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) programs are also included.

The infrared morphology of galactic centers

Initial results are presented of a program to map the centers of galaxies in the mid-infrared using the NASA-MSFC 20 pixel bolometer array. Maps at 10.8 micrometer of the galaxies NGC 5236 (M82), NGC 1808, NGC 4536, and NGC 4527 reveal complex emitting regions ranging in size from 500 pc to 2 kpc. The infrared spatial distributions generally resemble those in the visible and radio. In all cases a large fraction of the IRAS 12 micrometer flux originates in spatial structures prominent in the maps.

Thermal infrared imaging of Comet Halley

Thermal infrared images (10.8, 12.8, and 19.2 microns) of comet Halley were obtained on 1986 Mar. 28.7, 29.7 and 30.7 UT using the NASA-MSFC 20-pixel bolometer array at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility. Analysis of the observations shows: the presence of spatial structure indicative of dust ejection occurring mainly on the sunward side of the nucleus; a dust coma deficient in large particles (radius greater than 100 microns) compared with that of Comet P/Giacobini-Zinner, temporal variability consistent with an extrapolation of a quasi-sinusoidal light curve observed by IUE on 1986 March 23, 24, and 25; and a maximum at the nuclear condensation of the color temperature and the strength of the silicate emission feature.

MIPS - The Multiband Imaging Photometer for SIRTF

The Multiband Imaging Photometer for SIRTF (MIPS) is to be designed to reach as closely as possible the fundamental sensitivity and angular resolution limits for SIRTF over the 3 to 700 micron spectral region. It will use high performance photoconductive detectors from 3 to 200 micron with integrating JFET amplifiers. From 200 to 700 microns, the MIPS will use a bolometer cooled by an adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator. Over much of its operating range, the MIPS will make possible observations at and beyond the conventional Rayleigh diffraction limit of angular resolution.

Noise tube sources for the far IR and millimeter region

The radiant output of a noise tube designed for the 90-140-GHz (3.3-2.1-mm) frequency range has been compared with that from mercury lamps over the wavelength region from 0.4 to about 6 mm. Lamellar grating and Michelson Fourier transform spectrometers were used in conjunction with He cooled bolometers of NEP from 10 to the -12th to 10 to the -14th W/sq rt H2 to measure relative spectral irradiance. With this instrumental arrangement, the radiant power emitted by the noise tube was observed to be less than that from a mercury lamp, at least to a 3-mm wavelength, but it produced less source noise than an ac operated mercury lamp. When the noise tube operating current was reduced, the spectral irradiance peak shifted to longer wavelengths.

Infrared observations of eclipses of Io, its thermophysical parameters, and the thermal radiation of the Loki volcano and environs

Observations of Io during eclipses by Jupiter in 1981-1984 are reported. Data obtained at 3.45-30 microns using bolometer system No. 1 on the 3-m IRTF telescope at Mauna Kea are presented in extensive tables and graphs and analyzed by means of least-squares fitting of thermophysical models to the eclipse cooling and heating curves, thermal-radiation calculations for the Io volcanoes, and comparison with Voyager data. Best fits are obtained for a model comprising (1) a bright region with a vertically inhomogeneous surface and (2) a dark vertically homogeneous region with thermal inertia only about 0.1 times that of (1). Little evidence of volcanic-flux variability during the period is found, and the majority (but not all) of the excess thermal IR radiation in the sub-Jovian hemisphere is attributed to the Loki volcano and its lava lake.

A spectral radiance comparison of a noise tube and a HgXe arc lamp between 60 GHz and 600 GHz

The relative spectral radiance of a noise tube, model TN-167, designed for the frequency range 90-140 GHz (3.3 mm to 2.1 mm) was compared to that from a 200-watt high pressure HgXe arc lamp over the wavelength region from 0.5 to about 5 mm. A Michelson Fourier transform spectrometer and a lamellar grating instrument were used in conjunction with liquid helium-cooled bolometers of NEP 10 to the -12th to 10 to the -14th watt/(Hz) exp 1/2 to measure relative spectral radiant power. With this instrumental arrangement, the noise tube exhibited a very sharp low frequency cutoff at about 2.2/cm. The HgXe arc lamp emitted more radiant power than the noise tube in the wavelength region below 3 mm (100 GHz) down to 0.5 mm. Above 3 mm, the noise tube had a stronger output. The noise tube spectral radiance shifted to lower frequencies when the input current was lowered from 125 mA to 50 mA.

Infrared imaging of comets

Thermal infrared imaging of comets provides fundamental information about the distribution of dust in their comae and tails. The imaging program at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) uses a unique 20-pixel bolometer array that was developed to image comets at 8 to 30 micrometer. These images provide the basis for: (1) characterizing the composition and size distribution of particles, (2) determining the mass-loss rates from cometary nuclei, and (3) describing the dynamics of the interaction between the dust and the solar radiation. Since the array became operational in 1985, researchers have produced a unique series of IR images of comets Giacobini-Zinner (GZ), Halley, and Wilson. That of GZ was the first groundbased thermal image ever made of a comet and was used to construct, with visible observations, an albedo map. Those data and dynamical analyses showed that GZ contained a population of large (approximately 300 micrometer), fluffy dust grains that formed a distinict inner tail. The accumulating body of images of various comets has also provided a basis for fruitfully intercomparing comet properties. Researchers also took advantage of the unique capabilities of the camera to resolve the inner, possible protoplanetary, disk of the star Beta Pictoris, while not a comet research program, that study is a fruitful additional application of the array to solar system astronomy.

Evidence from sub-millimetre observations for thermal dust emission in NGC4151

Observations of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC4151 using the UKT14 bolometer on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope are reported. A 5 sigma upper limit of 200 mJy in an 11 arcsec aperture is found. Comparison with an earlier measurement at 155 microns indicates that at least half of the 155-micron flux is due to thermal dust emission. The remainder may be from a synchrotron source which becomes self-absorbed at wavelengths of less than 80 microns.

Polarization of microwave noise source radiation in the 30 GHz to 300 GHz range

Radiation spectra have been obtained in order to calculate the frequency bandwidth and polarization of three microwave noise sources. Results were obtained in the 1-10-mm wavelength region using a lamellar grating Fourier transform spectrometer and a helium-cooled bolometer detector. A secondary transmission region was found to have an input current as well as a polarization dependence, despite the directional output of the waveguide antenna.

Coherent tunable far infrared radiation

Tunable, CW, FIR radiation has been generated by nonlinear mixing of radiation from two CO2 lasers in a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) diode. The FIR difference-frequency power was radiated from the MIM diode antenna to a calibrated InSb bolometer. FIR power of 200 nW was generated by 250 mW from each of the CO2 lasers. Using the combination of lines from a waveguide CO2 laser, with its larger tuning range, with lines from CO2, N2O, and CO2-isotope lasers promises complete coverage of the entire FIR band with stepwise-tunable CW radiation.

Three-meter balloon-borne telescope

The Three-Meter Balloon-Borne Telescope is planned as a general purpose facility for making far-infrared and submillimeter astronomical observations from the stratosphere. It will operate throughout the spectral range 30 microns to 1 millimeter which is largely obscurred from the ground. The design is an f/13.5 Cassegrain telescope with an f/1.33 3-meter primary mirror supported with a 3-axis gimbal and stabilization system. The overall structure is 8.0 m high by 5.5 m in width by 4.0 m in depth and weighs 2000 kg. This low weight is achieved through the use of an ultra lightweight primary mirror of composite construction. Pointing and stabilization are achieved with television monitoring of the star field, flex-pivot bearing supports, gyroscopes, and magnetically levitated reaction wheels. Two instruments will be carried on each flight; generally a photometric camera and a spectrometer. A 64-element bolometer array photometric camera operating from 30 to 300 microns is planned as part of the facility. Additional instruments will be derived from KAO and other development programs.

The NASA high temperature superconductivity program

It has been recognized from the onset that high temperature superconductivity held great promise for major advances across a broad range of NASA interests. The current effort is organized around four key areas: communications and data, sensors and cryogenics, propulsion and power, and space materials technology. Recently, laser ablated YBa2Cu3O(7-x) films on LaAIO produced far superior RF characteristics when compared to metallic films on the same substrate. This achievement has enabled a number of unique microwave device applications, such as low insertion loss phase shifters and high Q filters. Melt texturing and melt quenched techniques are being used to produce bulk materials with optimized magnetic properties. These yttrium enriched materials possess enhanced flux pinning characteristics and will lead to prototype cryocooler bearings. Significant progress has also occurred in bolometer and current lead technology. Studies are being conducted to evaluate the effect of high temperature superconducting materials on the performance and life of high power magneto-plasma-dynamic thrusters. Extended studies were also performed to evaluate the benefit of superconducting magnetic energy storage for LEO space station, lunar and Mars mission applications. The project direction and level of effort of the program are also described.

Optical and microwave detection using Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O thin films

Recent progress at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL) in the development of optical and microwave detectors using high temperature superconducting thin films is described. Several objectives of this work have been accomplished, including: deposition of Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O thin films by laser abation processing (LAP); development of thin film patterning techniques, including in situ masking, wet chemical etching and laser patterning; measurements of bolometric and non-bolometric signatures in patterned Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O films using optical and microwave sources, respectively; analysis and design of an optimized bolometer through computer simulation, and investigation of its use in a Fourier transform spectrometer. The focus here is primarily on results from the measurement of the bolometric and non-bolometric response.

Characterizations of the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE) scanning radiometers

NASA's Earth Radiation Budget Experiment employs the Earth Radiation Budget Satellite and the NOAA 9 and 10 spacecraft to obtain absolute measurements of incoming solar radiation, shortwave earth-reflected solar radiation, and longwave earth-emitted radiation, using both scanning and nonscanning radiometers. Each of the three remote-sensing spacecraft carry narrow FOV scanning radiometers whose detection sensors are thermistor bolometers. Attention is presently given to the calibration models and methods employed in characterizing the scanning radiometers' output signals; the design features of the scanners and flight calibration systems are presented.
