Addendum to ICSBEP Logbooks 12r, 13r, 14r and 15r for Polyethylene and Graphite Reflected HEU Metal Critical Experiments

This report documents the experimenters’ data sheets that were recently (2023) discovered for critical experiments with highly enriched uranium metal with polyethylene and graphite reflectors. These data sheets were produced at the time of the measurements, when the dimensional inspection reports for the polyethylene and graphite were available. However, at this writing, those inspection reports are not available but may be in unmarked storage for the Y-12 National Security Complex. However, the data sheets presented herein contain sketches of the experimental configurations and other additional information that is not in the logbooks, such as dimensions and masses of the graphite measurements. This report reproduces the experimental data sheets that complement the logbooks. Some of the data on these sheets and the logbooks can be used to infer the dimensions and masses that are not documented. Some obvious mistakes in the logbook and data sheets have been corrected. In the reproduced data sheets, some of the information is not clearly visible: some information, such as average values, can be obtained from other data in the sheets or logbook. This report should be sent to the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Program at Idaho National Laboratory to complement the existing Oak Ridge Critical Facility logbooks there.

Implementing a Laser Stabilization System for Trapping Ca+ Ions: an Internship Reflection

At Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, I contributed to a project developing 3D printed micro ion traps for quantum computing. I designed, implemented, and assessed a laser stabilization system that locked lasers to the frequencies required for calibrating our High Finesse WS8-10 wavelength meter and for laser cooling and trapping of Ca+ ions. I also programmed a Python interface for hardware communication, data collection, and statistical analysis. Additionally, I optimized and aligned laser beam paths, and I implemented a closed digital feedback loop using Proportional, Integral, and Derivative (PID) control parameters. I analyzed both the long-term and short-term behavior of our locked lasers and adjusted PID parameters to enhance performance. Furthermore, I used COMSOL to simulate the capacitance of a linear Paul trap design and predict our trap’s performance. The procedures I developed for the interface, analysis, and simulations will continue to support the ion trapping experiment after my appointment. I strengthened my skills in data analysis, Python coding, and optical alignment for laser systems. My confidence as a researcher grew, particularly in communicating my research. This experience taught me the importance of careful planning and consideration in research and solidified my desire to continue exploring novel quantum technology as an undergraduate

Verifying LLM generative agents reflect human behavior in contested information environments to effectively simulate disinformation campaigns (Proteus)

Disinformation poses a significant and evolving threat to today’s online environment. Individuals encounter challenges in detecting disinformation, subsequently influencing their behavior and decision-making processes. Our research examines the potential use of large language model (LLM) generative agents (LGAs) to replicate human behavior to better understand how disinformation is spread in online environments. Using human subjects research, we first investigate how personality traits, individual differences, and demographic factors relate to decision-making in simulated online disinformation environments. Then, we examine whether LGAs can effectively replicate human responses in the same simulated online environments when assigned personality traits, demographic characteristics and behavioral attributes. Our findings indicate that LGAs can align with human decisions in these scenarios; however, alignment is contingent upon scenario context, persona settings and LLM selection. Results provide valuable insights for methodology refinement in future research and in utilizing LGAs to model complex national security challenges such as disinformation campaigns.

The Jupiter Experiments: High-240 Plutonium Metal Plates Separated by Lead and Reflected by Copper

Each layer consisted of a 6 by 6 matrix of either these fuel-filled containers or solid blocks of copper of the same outer dimensions. An example of this arrangement, along with one of the copper inner reflectors, is shown in Figure 1.4. This figure shows the same aluminum containers from Figure 1.3 but with the aluminum containers completely closed. The lifting rings shown on the copper inner reflector were only for assembly and were not present for the measurement (in which the holes were filled with copper plugs). Figure 1.5 shows the loading arrangement of the aluminum containers, along with aluminum shims around the container arrays to ensure a tight fit between these layers and the surrounding reflectors. All plates were in the same orientation; none were rotated in any fashion. Additional loading information for the PAHN plates and plate loading respective to the room entrance are provided in Figures 1.6 and 1.7, respectively.

Nuclear data sensitivity and uncertainty study of copper-reflected integral experiments [Slides]

This presentation touches on reducing uncertainties in intermediate-energy actinide nuclear data and this continues to be a high priority for many applications. The goal of PARADIGM (PARallel Approach of Differential and InteGral Measurements): accelerate efforts to reduce biases and uncertainties in nuclear data through improvements to the nuclear data pipeline. This presentation includes integral experiments and a summarization of existing copper nuclear data.
