Elysium Region, Mars: Characterization of tectonic features

In this paper the tectonic features of the Elysium region are identified and characterized. Identification of features was made using USGS controlled photomosaics (Elysium quadrangle, and portions of Amenthes and Cebrenia quadrangles); Viking Orbiter photographic data were used in individual cases to assist in identification. The positions and orientations of tectonic features can then be used, in conjunction with estimates of the mass of the volcanic load obtained from gravity modelling, to constrain the thickness of the elastic lithosphere in the region.

Sharp shortward-shifted features in the spectra of O subdwarfs

Preliminary inspection of archival high-dispersion ultraviolet spectra obtained by the International Ultraviolet Explorer reveal sharp shortward-shifted features in the spectra of O subdwarfs. In three examples presented here, BD + 75.325 deg, HD 128220 B, and BD + 28.4211 deg, stable, multiple, discrete shortward-shifted components of the N V, C IV, and Si IV resonance doublets are seen. The available data suggest that some of these features are persistent, being relatively stable in velocity and intensity over at least 9 months. It is tentatively suggested that the mechanism, or mechanisms, producing these discrete features operates universally in hot stars, from luminous O and B stars down through the O subdwarfs to include the hot white dwarfs. If true, this has important ramifications for current knowledge of mass loss in hot stars.

The Use of Linear Feature Detection to Investigate Thematic Mapper Data Performance and Processing

The geometric and radiometric characteristics of thematic mapper data through analysis of linear features in the data are investigated. The particular aspects considered are: (1) thematic mapper ground IFUV; (2) radiometric contrast between linear features and background; (3) precision of system geometric correction; (4) band-to-band registration; and (5) potential utility of TM data for linear feature detection especially as compared to MSS data. It is shown that TM data may be used to estimate TM pixel size illustrate band: band mis-registration.

Methods to recover the narrow Dicke sub-Doppler feature in evacuated wall-coated cells without restrictions on cell size

The hyperfine resonance observed in evacuated wall-coated cells with dimensions lambda/2 (lambda is the hyperfine resonance wavelength) consists of a narrow Dicke sub-Doppler linewidth feature, the spike, superimposed on a broad pedestal. The hydrogen maser provides a classic example of this lineshape. As cell size is increased, an effect unique to evacuated wall-coated cells occurs. Certain combinations of microwave field distribution and cell size result in a lineshape having a pedestal with a small spike feature or only the broad pedestal with no spike. Such conditions are not appropriate for atomic frequency standard applications. The cause of the evacuated wall-coated cell lineshape is reviewed and methods to recover the narrow spike feature without restrictions on cell size is discussed. One example is a cell with dimensions having equal volumes of exposure to opposite phases of the microwave magnetic field.

Development of a quantitative basis for selection of spectral features in a vegetation monitoring system

The development of an objective methodology for evaluation of alternative Landsat data preprocessing options, spectral transform features for monitoring vegetation, and feature summarization algorithms is presented. Based on estimates of spectral separability between a target class and its confusion classes, analysis of variance techniques are used to evaluate potential design options for large scale vegetation monitoring systems. Case studies are presented for early season and through the season spring small grains separation and for barley/other spring small grains separation. It is concluded that a basis for efficient, objective selection among alternative feature extraction approaches has been established for the large scale vegetation mapping/inventory problem. Although the approach has been demonstrated for the unitemporal class separability case, extensions to the multitemporal case are under development.

Identification of the 1400 and 1600 A features observed in the ultraviolet spectra of DA white dwarfs

The 600 A absorption feature in the spectra of cool DA white dwarf stars has been identified as a resonance broadening of Ly-alpha due to the hydrogen quasi molecule. Likewise, the 1400 A absorption feature in the spectra of cool and moderately warm DA white dwarf stars appears to be due to a Ly-alpha satellite line arising from the hydrogen ion quasi molecule. The strength of both features is gravity sensitive and therefore promises to be an excellent indicator of surface gravity.

Emission features in the 4-13 micron spectra of the reflection nebulae NGC 7023 and NGC 2023

Spectroscopy from 4 to 13 microns of the visual reflection nebulae NGC 7023 and NGC 2023 has been obtained. These data, together with previous work from 1 to 4 microns, show that the spectra of these sources consist of a relatively flat continuum from 1 to 13 microns and six emission features at 3.3, 3.4, 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, and 11.3 microns. The observations rule out equilibrium thermal emission for the features and continuum in reflection nebulae, and point toward a nonequilibrium emission mechanism such as thermal emission from thermally fluctuating small grains or fluorescence from large molecules. The similarity of the emission feature spectra in reflection nebulae to those in other sources suggests a universal emission mechanism, thus implying nonequilibrium emission mechanisms in other sources.

Spatial variation analyses of Thematic Mapper data for the identification of linear features in agricultural landscapes

A need exists for digitized information pertaining to linear features such as roads, streams, water bodies and agricultural field boundaries as component parts of a data base. For many areas where this data may not yet exist or is in need of updating, these features may be extracted from remotely sensed digital data. This paper examines two approaches for identifying linear features, one utilizing raw data and the other classified data. Each approach uses a series of data enhancement procedures including derivation of standard deviation values, principal component analysis and filtering procedures using a high-pass window matrix. Just as certain bands better classify different land covers, so too do these bands exhibit high spectral contrast by which boundaries between land covers can be delineated. A few applications for this kind of data are briefly discussed, including its potential in a Universal Soil Loss Equation Model.

Multipolarization SAR data for surface feature delineation

This paper presents the techniques and the utility of multipolarization Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data for surface feature delineation. Three channels of ratioed data (VV/HH, VH/HH, and VH/VV) are generated from the HH, VV, and VH polarization data (V = vertical, H = horizontal). The technique assumes redundancy of the VH and HV polarization and only VH polarization is used. The ratioed data are linearly stretched to yield a digital number within a range of 0 to 255. Based on the separability measure for two-class delineation, it was found that (1) the ratioed data resulted in a better delineation of surface features with high like (HH or VV) polarization digital number, and (2) the use of ratioed data provided further information not available from the original three-polarization data. The results suggest an advantage in using the ratioed data and the original three-polarization data for surface feature delineation.

Radiometric responsivity determination for Feature Identification and Location Experiment (FILE) flown on space shuttle mission

A procedure was developed to obtain the radiometric (radiance) responsivity of the Feature Identification and Local Experiment (FILE) instrument in preparation for its flight on Space Shuttle Mission 41-G (November 1984). This instrument was designed to obtain Earth feature radiance data in spectral bands centered at 0.65 and 0.85 microns, along with corroborative color and color-infrared photographs, and to collect data to evaluate a technique for in-orbit autonomous classification of the Earth's primary features. The calibration process incorporated both solar radiance measurements and radiative transfer model predictions in estimating expected radiance inputs to the FILE on the Shuttle. The measured data are compared with the model predictions, and the differences observed are discussed. Application of the calibration procedure to the FILE over an 18-month period indicated a constant responsivity characteristic. This report documents the calibration procedure and the associated radiometric measurements and predictions that were part of the instrument preparation for flight.

Timing of ancient extensional tectonic features on Mars

Although numerous studies have delineated the Tharsis and post-Tharsis volcanic/tectonic history on Mars, only a few attempts have examined the earlier epochs. This is not an easy task since unambiguous crater ages for pre-Tharsis and early Tharsis units are difficult to determine owing to a variety of active surface processes. Ancient tectonic features, however, have a sufficiently large superposed crater population that should permit relative dating. A technique for crater counting along linear features analagous to areal crater density is proposed. A modification of this approach has been tested and applied to a variety of ancient tectonic features.

Space Shuttle cloud detection and earth feature classification experiment

The Feature Identification and Location Experiment (FILE) that is being designed for the detection and classification of four primary earth features (water, vegetation, bare land, and the clouds-snow-ice class) is described. Consideration is given to the FILE classification technology concept and the FILE instrument, which will use two solid-state CCD cameras operating at 0.65 and 0.85-micron center frequency wavelengths, with the camera outputs being functions of the earth surface material radiance. The classification is based on camera output radiance ratio values. The preliminary analysis of the data collected on the STS 41-G mission is discussed. The results demonstrated the suitability of using the two-channel-ratio detection technology and a simple (y = mx) algorithm to autonomously classify the four earth surface features. The technology is especially attractive as a cloud sensor, where, in advance of or during a mission, a threshold value for cloud cover percentage can be programmed and/or adaptively modified for use in the control of other remote sensors.

Multipolarization SAR data for surface feature delineation and forest vegetation characterization

This paper presents the utility of multipolarization Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data for surface feature delineation and forest vegetation characterization. Three channels of radioed data (VV/HH, VH/HH, and VH/VV) are generated from the HH, VV, and VH polarization data (V = vertical, H = horizontal). The radioed data are linearly stretched to yield a digital number within a range of 0 to 255. The techniques for reducing SAR speckle noise and for measuring the degree of separation are discussed. For surface feature delineation, the results indicate that cross polarization as well as cross polarization radioed data better delineate those surface features that are difficult to separate by like polarization data. The results suggest using a median value filtering technique to reduce within-plot data fluctuation to increase the separability measure. For forest vegetation characterization, the results indicate that multipolarization SAR data may be used to estimate forest properties such as total-tree biomass, basal area, and tree height.

IUE observations of the broad continuum feature at 1400 A in the silicon and related stars

The upper main sequence chemically peculiar stars have previously been studied spectrophotometrically using low-resolution TD-1 spectra. These show that the broad continuum feature at 1400 A is a useful indicator of Si anomaly. In this paper the observations are extended to IUE low-resolution spectra and it is shown that this feature is indeed well correlated with Si and also with optical chemical peculiarity indices. Its utility in selecting silicon stars is further demonstrated. This feature is likely due to autoionization of Si II and is the best available discriminator of the overabundance of a key element in the Ap stars.

Search for polarization of the 3.3 and 11.3-micron interstellar emission features

Results are reported from a search for linear polarization of the 3.3 and 11.3-micron emission features in the Orion ionization front, NGC 7027, HD 44179 (the Red Rectangle), NGC 2023, BD + 30 deg 3639, and Elias 1. Recent theoretical calculations have predicted that if these features are due to PAHs they may be linearly polarized in many astronomical situations. The most sensitive measurements of and upper limits on the feature polarization are 1 percent at 3.3 microns and 3 percent at 11.3 microns.

Improvements to the CONTINUE feature in transient analysis

The CONTINUE feature in transient analysis as implemented in the standard release of COSMIC/NASTRAN has inherent errors associated with it. As a consequence, the results obtained by a CONTINUEd restart run do not, in general, match the results that would be obtained in a single run without the CONTINUE feature. These inherent errors were eliminated by improvements to the restart logic that were developed by RPK Corporation and that are available on all RPK-supported versions of COSMIC/NASTRAN. These improvements ensure that the results of a CONTINUEd transient analysis run are the same as those of a non-CONTINUEd run. In addition, the CONTINUE feature was extended to transient analysis involving uncoupled modal equations. The improvements and enhancement were illustrated by examples.

Cyclotron line features from neutron star atmospheres

Cyclotron line features from the polar cap plasmas of accreting magnetized neutron stars are modeled. The polar cap environment is modeled by a homogeneous isothermal plane-parallel slab threaded by a uniform superstrong magnetic field oriented orthogonal to the slab. Two physical cyclotron photon source functions are used. For conventional stopping depths, the emergent line spectra are fairly independent of the source functions. For hot atmospheres the details of the line transfer using relativistic kinematics differ substantially from those using nonrelativistic kinematics. Aside from finite recoil, both a finite natural linewidth and conventional stopping depths suppress the escape of photons blueward of line center and potential line features tend to be smeared out into the low-energy continuum. The formation of a line features is most favorable in low-field high-temperature atmospheres where cyclotron photon production is confined to a layer of small column density.

Spatial variations of the 3-micron emission features within Orion's Bar

3-micron spectra of the Orion Bar region have been obtained at three positions corresponding to different distances from the exciting source. The recently discovered unidentified features at 3.46, 3.51, and 3.57 microns are clearly visible. The spectra show that the 3.4 and 3.51-micron emission features increase in intensity relative to the strong 3.3-micron feature as the distance from the exciting source increases. The implications for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and recent ideas concerning their ultraviolet excitation and spatial evolution are discussed.
