DCE and Legacy Systems - An Experience Report What Really Happened

The Multimission Ground Data System (MGDS) in use at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) was developed in the latter half of the 1980s. It was a major departure from the one-of-a-kind, non-distributed ground data system previously employed. Today, a project is underway to determine if the Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) has a place in MGDS. The initial component targeted for replacement is an application layer built on top of TCP/IP which handles the MGDS message-passing requirements.

Environmental Effects on the Stability of Optical Fibers Used for Reference Frequency Distribution

The frequency Standards Laboratory at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is responsible for the generation and distribution of ultra-stabel reference frequencies in NASA's Deep Space Network (DSN).Certain assemblies and components of the Radio Science and VLBI systems are located in the cones of tracking antennas hundreds of meters from the Frequency and Timing Subsystem's frequency standards.

Structural Safety of a Hubble Space Telescope Science Instrument

This paper gives an overview of safety requirements related to structural design and verificationof payloads to be launched and/or retrieved by the Space Shuttle. To demonstrate the generalapproach used to implement these requirements in the development of a typical Shuttle payload, theWide Field/Planetary Camera II, a second generation science instrument currently being developed bythe Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for the Hubble Space Telescope is used as an example. Inaddition to verification of strength and dynamic characteristics, special emphasis is placed upon thefracture control implementation process, including parts classification and fracture controlacceptability.

Design and Control of the MESUR/Pathfinder Microrover

The use of unmanned robotic vehicles to assist in the exploration of Mars and other planets has been of interest to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for several decades and has been the focus of an ongoing research program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for a similar period of time.

A Contracign out Success Story

This paper is based on the highly successfull Mission and Computing Support (MACS) Contract, between the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and OAO Corporation, which encompasses a comprehensive set of work for information systems and services. JPL awarded the MACS contract in 1988 and saw very succeful operation during the first five years which were recently completed.

Data assimilation of ground GPG total electron content into a physics-based ionosheric model by use of the Kalman filter

A three-dimensional (3-D) Global Assimilative Ionospheric Model (GAIM) is currently being developed by a joint University of Southern California and Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) team. To estimate the electron density on a global grid, GAIM uses a first-principles ionospheric physics model and the Kalman filter as one of its possible estimation techniques.

NEMS for space and terrestrial applications

Nanoscale electromechanical systems (NEMS) techniques were used to manufacture a membrane used to supply singly charged un-fractured ions for mass spectrometry. The innovative nanostructure, developed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), is a major advance over micromachined 'volcano' field ionization devices and filaments or other energy-intensive devices, achieving nearly 100% ionization of gases and vapors without appreciable fracture.

Estimating the Cost to do a Cost Estimate

This article provides a model for estimating the cost required to do a cost estimate. Overruns may lead to concellation of a project. In 1991, we completed a study on the cost of doing cost estimates for the class of projects normally encountered in the development and implementation of equipment at the network of tracking stations operated by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for NASA.
