Algorithms and logic for incorporating MLS back azimuth information into the NASA TCV B-737 airplane area navigation system

Navigation position estimates are based on range information form a randomly located DME and MLS back azimuth angular information. The MLS volmetric coverage checks are performed to ensure that proper navigation inputs are being utilized. These algorithms and volumetric checks were designed so that they could be added to most existing area navigation systems with minimum software modification.

Examining graphite reinforcement in composites

Structure of graphite layers in composite parts can be checked by pyrolizing epoxy portion of composite samples. After 2-3 hours in nitrogen atmosphere at 540 C, only graphite fibers remain. These can be separated and checked for proper number, thickness, and orientation.

Testing EKG electrodes on-line

Simple test instrument allows electrocardiograph operator to check individual electrodes while they are attached to subject. Simply by rotating switch and observing meter, operator verifies that each electrode is not short-circuited or open-circuited and does not present excessive contact resistance at its interface with skin. Instrument also makes it convenient to check electrode cables that are subject to frequent bending and wear, such as cables used on patients who are exercising.

CADAT logic simulation program

CADAT Logic Simulation Program (LOGSIM) checks functional correctness of electronic logic circuit by simulating circuit at logic gate level. LOGSIM also checks propagation delay through logic nets and indicates any timing or "race" problems.

Fault-tolerant computer study

A set of building block circuits is described which can be used with commercially available microprocessors and memories to implement fault tolerant distributed computer systems. Each building block circuit is intended for VLSI implementation as a single chip. Several building blocks and associated processor and memory chips form a self checking computer module with self contained input output and interfaces to redundant communications buses. Fault tolerance is achieved by connecting self checking computer modules into a redundant network in which backup buses and computer modules are provided to circumvent failures. The requirements and design methodology which led to the definition of the building block circuits are discussed.

Theoretical studies of solar-pumped lasers

Estimates of the absorption and emission characteristics of molecules required to develop materials for solar-pumped lasers are addressed. These characteristics are described in terms of the Franck Condon factors, which are calculated from the molecular wave functions. Wave functions for vibrational levels in the lower and upper electronic states of I2 and NSe are calculated numerically and methods of checking errors discussed. Errors arise when the vibrational quantum numbers are high; but, using a calculated rather than measured value of the dissociation energy, wave functions up to the fiftieth vibrational level are obtained. A numerical method of evaluating the wave functions is given, which should be more accurate in the region of electronic transitions during absorption. Franck Condon factors, plotted versus the wavelength of the absorbed photons, are shown, and a check on the Franck Condon factors is made using the vibrational sum rule.

Development of Advanced Czochralski Growth Process to produce low cost 150 KG silicon ingots from a single crucible for technology readiness

The modified CG2000 crystal grower construction, installation, and machine check-out was completed. The process development check-out proceeded with several dry runs and one growth run. Several machine calibrations and functional problems were discovered and corrected. Several exhaust gas analysis system alternatives were evaluated and an integrated system approved and ordered. A contract presentation was made at the Project Integration Meeting at JPL, including cost-projections using contract projected throughput and machine parameters. Several growth runs on a development CG200 RC grower show that complete neck, crown, and body automated growth can be achieved with only one operator input. Work continued for melt level, melt temperature, and diameter sensor development.

Space Shuttle cargo processing.

The spacecraft processing techniques to be used at the Kennedy Space Center for the assembly and check-out of Space Shuttle cargoes are discussed. The processing flow for vertically handled spacecraft, which are inserted into the Shuttle orbiter cargo bay while the orbiter is in the vertical position and often are attached to a separate solid booster stage, includes assembly into unified payloads in the Vertical Processing Facility, followed by Cargo Integration Test Equipment tests to ensure cargo bay compatibility, and transportation to the launch pad. Horizontally handled spacecraft such as Spacelab, which are inserted into the Orbiter cargo bay while it is in the Orbiter Processing Facility in the horizontal position, are assembled and checked out within the Operations and Checkout Building, where the CITE tests are performed and the Spacelab will be disassembled, and then transported to the Orbiter Processing Facility. It is pointed out that during the Space Shuttle era, when the number of spacecraft to be processed simultaneously at Kennedy will double or triple, all spacecraft processing facilities will be required to handle the workload.

The dependence of upstream wave periods on the interplanetary magnetic field strength

It has long been known that the periods of Pc 3, 4 pulsations on the ground correlate with the magnitude of the interplanetary magnetic field. This fact has been used to argue for an exogenic source for these pulsations. Particularly attractive candidates for the source of pulsations in this frequency range are the upstream waves of similar frequencies which are associated with populations of ions reflected from the bow shock. However, the dependence of the period of these waves on the strength of the interplanetary magnetic field has never been checked. This paper performs such a check and confirms that the upstream waves have the proper functional relationship.

Group 4: Instructor training and qualifications

Each professional instructor or check airman used in LOFT training course should complete an FAA approved training course in the appropriate aircraft type. Instructors used in such courses need not be type-rated. If an instructor or check airman who is presently not line-qualified is used as a LOFT instructor, he or she should remain current in line-operational procedures by observing operating procedures from the jump seat on three typical line segments pr 90 days on the appropriate aircraft type. ("Line qualification" means completion as a flight crew member of at least three typical line segments per 90 days on the appropriate aircraft type.) The training should include the requirement of four hours of LOFT training, in lieu of actual aircraft training or line operating experience.

Spatial and Temporal scales of time-averaged 700 MB height anomalies

The monthly and seasonal forecasting technique is based to a large extent on the extrapolation of trends in the positions of the centers of time averaged geopotential height anomalies. The complete forecasted height pattern is subsequently drawn around the forecasted anomaly centers. The efficacy of this technique was tested and time series of observed monthly mean and 5 day mean 700 mb geopotential heights were examined. Autocorrelation statistics are generated to document the tendency for persistence of anomalies. These statistics are compared to a red noise hypothesis to check for evidence of possible preferred time scales of persistence. Space-time spectral analyses at middle latitudes are checked for evidence of periodicities which could be associated with predictable month-to-month trends. A local measure of the average spatial scale of anomalies is devised for guidance in the completion of the anomaly pattern around the forecasted centers.

Mapping of wildlife habitat in Farmington Bay, Utah

Mapping was accomplished through the interpretation of high-altitude color infrared photography. The feasibility of utilizing LANDSAT digital data to augment the analysis was explored; complex patterns of wildlife habitat and confusion of spectral classes resulted in the decision to make limited use of LANDSAT data in the analysis. The final product is a map which delineates wildlife habitat at a scale of 1:24,000. The map is registered to and printed on a screened U.S.G.S. quadrangle base map. Screened delineations of shoreline contours, mapped from a previous study, are also shown on the map. Intensive field checking of the map was accomplished for the Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area in August 1981; other areas on the map received only spot field checking.

Coupled rotor/airframe vibration analysis program manual. Volume 2: Sample input and output listings

Sample input and output listings obtained with the base program (SIMVIB) of the coupled rotor/airframe vibration analysis and the external programs, G400/F389 and E927 are presented. Results for five of the base program test cases are shown. They represent different applications of the SIMVIB program to study the vibration characteristics of various dynamic configurations. Input and output listings obtained for one cycle of the G400/F389 coupled program are presented. Results from the rotor aeroelastic analysis E927 also appear. A brief description of the check cases is provided. A summary of the check cases for all the external programs interacting with the SIMVIB program is illustrated.

Ground level reflectance measurement techniques - An evaluation with emphasis on the importance of spectral calibration

The bandpasses, overflight conditions, and sensor geometry that will provide optimum target discrimination in remote-sensing studies can be determined only from spectral reflectance measurements made for various sun-target-sensor geometries, supplemented by model calculations which can be checked against field data. The accurate measurement of ground reflectance properties is critical to the design of future sensors and to the determination of imaging conditions. The current investigation has the objective to review typical methods of measuring spectral reflectance, to point out some of the problems inherent to reflectance measuring techniques, and to present a method of checking measurement accuracy.

Are C1 chondrites chemically fractionated - A trace element study

Six C1 chondrite samples and a C2 xenolith from the Plainview H5 chondrite were analyzed by radiochemical neutron activation for a large variety of elements, including rare earths. The sample processing is described, including the irradiation, chemical procedure, rare earths separation, counting techniques, radiochemical purity check, and chemical yields. The results of consistency checks on a number of elements are discussed. Abundances for siderophiles, volatiles, and rare earths are presented and discussed. Tests are presented for fractionation of rare earths and other refractories, compositional uniformity of C1's, and interelement correlations. There is no conclusive evidence for nebular fractionation affecting C1's. Three fractionation-prone rare earths have essentially the same relative abundances in C1's and all other chondrite classes, and hence are apparently not fractionated in C1's.

The calculation of theoretical chromospheric models and the interpretation of solar spectra from rockets and spacecraft

Models and spectra of sunspots were studied, because they are important to energy balance and variability discussions. Sunspot observations in the ultraviolet region 140 to 168 nn was obtained by the NRL High Resolution Telescope and Spectrograph. Extensive photometric observations of sunspot umbrae and prenumbrae in 10 chanels covering the wavelength region 387 to 3800 nm were made. Cool star opacities and model atmospheres were computed. The Sun is the first testcase, both to check the opacity calculations against the observed solar spectrum, and to check the purely theoretical model calculation against the observed solar energy distribution. Line lists were finally completed for all the molecules that are important in computing statistical opacities for energy balance and for radiative rate calculations in the Sun (except perhaps for sunspots). Because many of these bands are incompletely analyzed in the laboratory, the energy levels are not well enough known to predict wavelengths accurately for spectrum synthesis and for detailed comparison with the observations.
