Undercooling and crystallization behaviour of antimony droplets

The droplet emulsion technique is presently used to examine the undercooling and crystallization behavior of pure antimony. Control of droplet size and applied cooling rate allowed maximum undercooling to be extended from 0.08 to 0.23 T(m). A droplet coating was produced by means of emulsification which appears to furnish a favorable crystallographic matching for effective nucleation catalysis of a metastable simple cubic structure. Thermal analysis shows the melting temperature of the single cubic phase to be about 625 C.

Gas chromatographic instrumentation for the analysis of aerosols and gases in Titan's atmosphere

Instrumentation presently being developed by NASA for the collection and analysis of organic gases and aerosols in Titan's atmosphere is described together with the results of the preliminary experiments. For the aerosols, stepwise pyrolysis was shown to be a suitable method for preparing complex organic material for gas chromatography (GC), and a pyrolysis-gas chromatograph was developed and successfully used to analyze a simulated Titan aerosol. Atmospheric gases will be collected by a low-pressure gas sampling system using large-volume sample loops and analyzed by GC. The results of preliminary studies using a 20 cu cm sampling system and a very sensitive metastable ionization detector showed that hydrocarbon components at the 10 ppb level can be detected. Studies are in progress on shortening the overall analysis time by improving the pyrolysis system, the gas sampling system, and the associated gas chromatograph. Further development of the gas sampling system is planned to ensure rapid collection of samples adequate for analysis by GC over the entire range of pressures to be encountered during the probe's descent.

Excitation of O(1D) atoms in aurorae and emission of the forbidden OI 6300-A line

The electron aurora leads to six processes capable of exciting the O(1D2) metastable state of the atomic-oxygen ground-state configuration, the parent state of the 6300-A red line. Altitude profiles of the volume emission rate resulting from each process are computed for Maxwellian electron spectra with characteristic energies between 0.1 and 2.0 keV. Since each process peaks at a different altitude, the sum or total volume emission rate extends over a wide altitude range. Measurements of 6300-A emission obtained by rocket and satellite-borne instruments are summarized, and it is shown that the chemical reaction of N(2D) with O2 is the major source of O(1D) atoms in the electron aurora. New calculations of the 6300-A:4728-A column emission-rate ratio are presented for a range of characteristic energies in an assumed Maxwellian electron spectrum. An approximate equation for the red-line emission per unit energy input is given as a function of electron-spectrum characteristic energy.

Interstellar diamonds in meteorites

Primitive meteorites contain up to 400 ppm of a very fine-grained type of carbon tentatively called C-delta. Evidence is presented here that part of all of the C-delta is primary, not shock-produced, diamond formed by stellar condensation as a metastable phase. It appears that interstellar dust contains diamond.

Production of pulsed atomic oxygen beams via laser vaporization methods

The generation of energetic pulsed atomic oxygen beams by laser-driven evaporation of cryogenically frozen ozone/oxygen films and thin indium-tin oxide (ITO) films is reported. Mass spectroscopy is used in the mass and energy characterization of beams from the ozone/oxygen films, and a peak flux of 3 x 10 to the 20th/sq m per sec at 10 eV is found. Analysis of the time-of-flight data suggests that several processes contribute to the formation of the oxygen beam. Results show the absence of metastable states such as the 2p(3)3s(1)(5S) level of atomic oxygen blown-off from the ITO films. The present process has application to the study of the oxygen degradation problem of LEO materials.

Optical characterization of semi-insulating GaAs - Determination of the Fermi energy, the concentraion of the midgap EL2 level and its occupancy

The key electronic characteristics of semiinsulating GaAs, i.e., the Fermi energy, concentration, and occupancy of the midgap donor EL2, and the net concentration of ionized acceptors can all be determined from high-resolution measurements of the EL2 intracenter absorption. The procedure is based on the measurement of zero-phonon line intensity before and after the complete transfer of EL2 to its metastable state followed by thermal recovery. The procedure is quantitative, involves no fitting parameters, and unlike existing methods, is applicable even when a significant part of the EL2 is ionized.

Characterization of precipitates in a niobium-zirconium-carbon alloy

A niobium alloy with 1 percent zirconium and 0.063 percent carbon by weight was investigated in the as-rolled and annealed conditions, and after high-temperature (1350 and 1400 K) exposure with and without an applied stress. In the as-rolled and annealed conditions, large metastable carbides were observed in addition to a regular distribution of small particles. During the high-temperature exposure, the majority of the large carbides were dissolved and a more stable carbide phase formed. This finely dispersed phase had a composition determined to be approximately 70 percent ZrC and approximately 30 percent NbC and showed some evidence of an orientation relationship with the matrix. The precipitates appeared to coarsen slightly after approximately 5000 hr exposure in the presence of an applied stress resulted in a decrease in the size and in the interparticle spacing of the stable precipitates. However, the composition of the precipitate phase and its ability to pin dislocations were not affected by the temperature or stress conditions.

Noncontact temperature pattern measuring device

This invention relates to a noncontact imagine pyrometer system for obtaining the true temperature image of a given substance in a contactless fashion without making assumptions about localized emissivity of the substance or the uniformity of the temperature distribution. Such a contactless temperature imaging system has particular application in the study and production of many materials where the physical contact required to make a conventional temperature measurement drastically effects or contaminates the physical process being observed. Two examples where accurate temperature profiles are of critical interest are: (1) the solid-liquid phase change interface in the production of electronic materials and (2) metastable materials in the undercooling region. The apparent novelty resides in the recognition that an active pyrometer system may be advantageously adapted to perform contactless temperature imaging so that an accurate temperature profile can be obtained.

Diapirs of the Mediterranean ridge: The tectonic regime of an incipient accreted terrane

The occurrence of diapirs in the Mediterranean ridge stems mostly from the massive deposition of salt and gypsum in the Mediterranean basin during the late Miocean. The diapiric emplacement of the evaporitic sequence is not obvious, because the mobilization of the salt beds and the initiation of the diapiric upward flow are constrained by the relatively shallow thickness of the Plio-Pleistocene sedimentary overburden and by the low heat flow that prevails in the eastern Mediterranean. The diapirs consist also of early Cretaceous shales as well as other gravitationally metastable strata which are less mobile than salt. Studies of subduction trenches and their surroundings show that shallow ridges occur seaward of the trenches in many places. The collisional motion between the African and the Eurasian plates would further enhance accretion of sediments in the Mediterranean ridge, which would attain subaerial exposure, and eventually would become a mountain range accreted to southern Europe. The numerous diapirs of salt and shales that occur in the ridge would be common features in the future accreted terrane, indicating an intermediate extensional phase in the tectonic history of the development of crustal growth.

Crystallization of heavy metal fluoride glasses

The kinetics of crystallization of a number of fluorozirconate glasses were studied using isothermal and dynamic differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. The addition of the fluorides LiF, NaF, AlF3, LaF3 to a base glass composition of ZrF4-BaF2 reduced the tendency to crystallize, probably by modifying the viscosity-temperature relation. ZrF4-BaF2-LaF3-AlF3-NaF glass was the most stable against devitrification and perhaps is the best composition for optical fibers with low scattering loss. Some glasses first crystallize out into metastable beta-BaZr2F10 and beta-BaZrF6 phases, which transform into the most stable alpha-phases when heated to higher temperatures. The size of the crystallites was estimated to be about 600 A from X-ray diffraction.

Excitation of the OI (3s 5S0-3p 5P; lambda 7774 A) multiplet by electron impact on O2

Electron impact on O2 has been employed to ascertain the absolute cross-section value and emission linewidths of the OI (3s 5S0-3p 5P; 7774 A) multiplet. The emission linewidths are highly Doppler-broadened in dissociative excitation, and display two distinct kinetic energy distributions: which indicate that both purely repulsive and discrete, bound, excited molecular states, which then predissociate, are involved in the dissociation process that leads to the excitation of OI 7774 A. The magnitude of the measured cross-section and the fragment kinetic energy distribution both indicate that the previous time-of-flight studies of the metastable OI (5S0) state require reinterpretation.

Precipitation in a rapidly solidified and aged Ni-Al-Mo alloy

The early stages of decomposition of a highly supersaturated nickel-base alloy have been studied using TEM, SEM, and X-ray diffraction. The material was produced as a metastable solid solution by chill-block melt-spinning. On aging, the material exhibited a number of decomposition products appearing in series or concomitantly. Some of the decomposition products of this alloy, Ni4Mo, Ni3Mo, and Ni2Mo, are related to those found in Ni-Mo binary alloys. Alpha-Mo formed during solidification was distinguished from that formed by precipitation in the solid state by orientation relationships.

Structural properties of bismuth-bearing semiconductor alloys

The structural properties of bismuth-bearing III-V semiconductor alloys InPBi, InAsBi, and InSbBi were studied theoretically. Bond energies, bond lengths, and strain coefficients were calculated for pure AlBi, GaBi, and InBi compounds and their alloys, and predictions were made for the mixing enthalpies, miscibility gaps, and critical metastable-to-stable material transition temperatures. Miscibility calculations indicate that InSbBi will be the most miscible, and the InPBi will be the the most difficult to mix. However, calculations of the hardness of the Bi compounds indicate that, once formed, the InPBi alloy will be harder than the other Bi alloys and substantially harder than the currently favored narrow-gap semiconductor HgCdTe.

Experimental and theoretical investigation of the stability of stepwise pH gradients in continuous flow electrophoresis

Isoelectric focusing in the continuous flow mode can be more quickly and economically performed by admitting a stepwise pH gradient composed of simple buffers instead of uniform mixtures of synthetic carrier ampholytes. The time-consuming formation of the pH gradient by the electric field is thereby omitted. The stability of a three-step system with arginine - morpholinoethanesulfonic acid/glycylglycine - aspartic acid is analyzed theoretically by one-dimensional computer simulation as well as experimentally at various flow rates in a continuous flow apparatus. Excellent agreement between experimental and theoretical data was obtained. This metastable configuration was found to be suitable for focusing of proteins under continuous flow conditions. The influence of various combinations of electrolytes and membranes between electrophoresis chamber and electrode compartments is also discussed.

Two-photon ionization of atomic hydrogen with elliptically polarized light

The theory of two-photon ionization of a hydrogenic state in the nonrelativistic dipole approximation is generalized for elliptically polarized light. An application to the metastable 2S state of atomic hydrogen is made. Significant differences in the angular distribution of the outgoing electrons are found depending upon the polarization of the photons. It is claimed that two-photon ionization employing elliptically polarized photons from lasers may provide an additional test for the theories of multiphoton ionization.

What is the essential physics of mass loss from late-type stars?

A review is given of the data concerning mass loss from late-type stars. The major classes of mass-loss mechanisms (thermally-driven winds, radiatively-driven winds, and wave-driven winds) are discussed, and the empirical mass-loss rates and other data are compared with theoretical predictions for any of these mechanisms acting alone. It is likely that several mechanisms act together to produce the large mass-loss rates in the Mira and nonpulsating M supergiants. Studies of the solar atmosphere suggest that thermal bifurcation driven by molecular condensation instabilities may play a critical role in cooling the atmospheres of luminous cool stars and forming siicate dust. It is possible that several metastable modes of atmospheric structure may exist for a given set of stellar parameters.

Fundamentals of rapid solidification processing

An attempt is made to illustrate the continuous change that occurs in the solidification behavior of undercooled melts, as cooling rates increase from 0.0001 K/sec to about 1000 K/sec. At the higher cooling rates, more significant changes occur as the dendrite tip temperature begins to drop from the equilibrium liquidus. Discontinuous solidification behavior changes will occur if absolute stability is reached, or a metastable phase forms, or solidification proceeds to a glass rather than to a crystalline solid, or if there is significant undercooling prior to nucleation.

Wide-angle X-ray scattering study of heat-treated PEEK and PEEK composite

Samples of poly(etheretherketone) (PEEK) neat resin and APC-2 carbon fiber composite were subjected to various heat treatments, and the effect of quenching and annealing treatments was studied by wide-angle X-ray scattering. It is found that high-temperature treatments may introduce disorder into neat resin and composite PEEK when followed by rapid cooling. The disorder is metastable and can revert to ordered state when the material is heated above its glass transition temperature and then cooled slowly. The disorder may result from residual thermal stresses.
