Synthesis and biological screening by novel hybrid fluorocarbon hydrocarbon compounds for use as artificial blood substitutes

A series of hybrid fluorochemicals of general structure R(1)R(2)R(3)CR(4) was prepared where the R(i)'s (i=1,2,3) is a saturated fluoroalkyl group of formula C sub N F sub 2n+1, and R(4) is an alkyl group C sub n H sub 2n+1 or a related moiety containing amino, ether, or ester functions but no CF bonds. Compounds of this class containing approximately eight to twenty carbons total have physical properties suitable for use as the oxygen carrying phase of fluorochemical emulsion artificial blood. The chemical synthesis, and physical and biological testing of pure single isomers of the proposed artificial blood candidate compounds are included. Significant results are given.

Fuel economy screening study of advanced automotive gas turbine engines

Fuel economy potentials were calculated and compared among ten turbomachinery configurations. All gas turbine engines were evaluated with a continuously variable transmission in a 1978 compact car. A reference fuel economy was calculated for the car with its conventional spark ignition piston engine and three speed automatic transmission. Two promising engine/transmission combinations, using gasoline, had 55 to 60 percent gains over the reference fuel economy. Fuel economy sensitivities to engine design parameter changes were also calculated for these two combinations.

Advanced screening of electrode couples

The chromium (Cr(3+)/Cr(2+)) redox couple (electrolyte and electrode) was investigated to determine its suitability as negative electrode for the iron (Fe(3+)/Fe(2+))-chromium (Cr(3+)/Cr(2+)) redox flow battery. Literature search and laboratory investigation established that the solubility and stability of aqueous acidic solutions of chromium(3) chloride and chromium(2) chloride are sufficient for redox battery application. Four categories of electrode materials were tested; namely, metals and metalloid materials (elements and compounds), alloys, plated materials, and Teflon-bonded materials. In all, the relative performance of 26 candidate electrode materials was evaluated on the basis of slow scan rate linear sweep voltammetry in stirred solution. No single material tested gave both acceptable anodic an acceptable cathodic performance. However, the identification of lead as a good cathodic electrocatalyst and gold as a good anodic electrocatalyst led to the invention of the lead/gold combination electrocatalyst. This type of catalyst can be fabricated in several ways and appears to offer the advantages of each metal without the disadvantages associated with their use as single materials. This lead/gold electrocatalyst was tested by NASA-Lewis Research Center in complete, flowing, redox batteries comprising a stack of several cells. A large improvement in the battery's coulombic and energy efficiency was observed.

Core compressor exit stage study. Volume 3: Data and performance report for screening test configurations

Rear stage blading designs that have lower losses in their endwall boundary layer regions were developed. Test data and performance results for rotor B, stator B, and stator C - blading designs that offer promise of reducing endwall losses relative to the baseline are given. A low speed research compressor was the principal investigative tool. The tests were conducted using four identical stages of blading so that the test data would be obtained in a true multistage environment.

Flammability screening tests of resins

Selected flammability characteristics of glass cloth laminates of thermosetting resins are evaluated. A protocol for the evaluation of the flammability hazards presented by glass cloth laminates of thermosetting resins and the usefulness of that protocol with two laminates are presented. The glass laminates of an epoxy resin, M-751 are evaluated for: (1) determination of smoke generation from the laminates; (2) analysis of products of oxidative degradation of the laminates; (3) determination of minimum oxygen necessary to maintain flaming oxidation; (4) evaluation of toxicological hazards.

A comparison of screening techniques for ceramic capacitors

The techniques involved are ultrasonic scanning, neutron radiography, scanning laser acoustic microscopy, and voltage conditioning. The test capacitor, for this first phase, is a 0.47 uF, 50V capacitor style CKR06. Eighteen of 768 devices failed in voltage conditioning with elapsed times from 15 minutes to 1239 hours. Eleven of the failures were detected by ultrasonic scanning. Four failures were found by neutron radiography. Fourteen failures showed up in the acoustic microscopy test. Three failures in voltage conditioning were not detected by any of the techniques. Failures were confirmed by destructive physical analysis. There is no direct relationship between the size of the defect and electrical failure.

Sound diffraction around screens and wedges for arbitrary point source locations

A development is presented for the Green's function for a point source in the vicinity of a rigid wedge. The diffraction contributions to the Green's function for arbitrary source and listener location is expressed in a form which can be readily evaluated using the Laguerre technique for numerical integration. The present approach offers the advantages of efficient numerical evaluation and of relatively straightforward reduction to well-known analytical approximations in limiting cases. Comparisons with previously obtained experimental and numerical results obtained by Ambaud and Bergassoli (1972) are presented. The comparison with the experimental results is excellent; the advantages of the present numerical technique, vis a vis that of Ambaud and Bergassoli, are pointed out.

Separation of internal and external fields: A new technique of data screening

A method for eliminating transient variation from MAGSAT data is described. Instead of using the conventional Kp index, the Km index is used for the rejection of nonquiet data. To build the Km index, the surface of the Earth is divided in eight sectors. Each sector is defined by two or three magnetic observatories and its geographic limits. For each three hourly interval the MAGSAT tracks were drawn on a map showing the location of the station (the crosses), the limits of the sector, and the value of the mean K index inside each sector. No figure in a sector means that the activity level in this sector is lower than 5 nt; in a sector covered with number 1, the activity lies between 5 and 20 nt; 2 stands for any level greater than 20 nT.

Mutagenic screening of diamine monomers

The effects of phenyl ring coupling moieties, of isomeric amine positions relative to the coupling groups, and of insertion of other coupling groups on the mutagenic response of a series of dianilines were investigated using the Ames Salmonella assay. Generally, S-9 metabolic activation from Aroclor-induced rat liver was required for mutagenic expression. The range of mutagenicity of steric isomers of several dianiline series was also investigated. No mutagenicity was found for purified samples of o,o' and m,p' isomers of methylene dianiline (MDA) and diaminobenzophenone, while varying degrees of mutagenicity were found for other isomers. The mutagenicity of "benzylogs" of MDA decreased as the degree of linear separation of the m,m' anilino groups by aromatic rings increased. Methylation and two-year storage increased mutagenic response in certain isomers of MDA. However, high performance liquid chromatography indicated there was no discernible change in m,p'-MDA samples aged under varied conditions over four months. Likewise, no change in mutagenicity was found.

Space Shuttle reaction control subsystem propellant tank masked screen test

During final development testing of the Space Shuttle Reaction Control Subsystem propellant tanks, a problem with pressure transients in the system was uncovered. Due to the nature of the tanks, performance tests to determine the impact of the transients on the expulsion efficiency of the tanks could not directly simulate the actual conditions which would be present in a low-gravity environment. However, by masking or covering various segments of the propellant acquisition device, a good simulation of a low-gravity environment was achieved in ground testing.
