The Rise of US Photovoltaics: An Exploration of Land Use Density Trends in Large‐Scale Solar Facility Attributes, 2012–2021

An energy transition is underway in the United States; renewable energy generation is now on par with coal and nuclear generation. The number of large-scale solar photovoltaic facilities increased approximately tenfold between 2012 and 2021, with an associated 25-fold increase in cumulative installed capacity. With ambitious decarbonization and renewable energy deployment goals at both the federal and state levels, deployments of large-scale solar photovoltaic facilities will continue apace. This growth is likely to be complex with ripples of impacts felt throughout different aspects of society, and thus accurate solar land use metrics allowing more accurate predictions are of value to policymakers, planners, and other stakeholders in the future photovoltaic build-out. In this paper, we leverage data from the newly released US Large-Scale Solar Photovoltaic Database to examine recent trends in large-scale solar photovoltaic land use. We analyze the relationships between solar array capacity density (W/acre) and a range of facility attributes to better understand the future land requirements of solar capacity expansion over the coming years. Installed capacity was the single strongest determinant of solar array area. However, we found substantial variation in capacity density across facility attributes, including mount type, latitude, urbanicity, time, and prior land use.

FLIT: A Generic Fortran Library based on Interfaces and Templates

This Fortran code consists of multiple modules with a focus on simplifying array operations, image processing, and numerical computation especially for computational geophysics applications. We intend to use this code to demonstrate the application and usefulness of Fortran interface and templates for generic programming, especially for computational geophysics and seismology applications. The code has several notable features. Firstly, it is based on a modularized structure, where each module contains multiple functions but with a focus of functionality. Secondly, it heavily uses interfaces and templates for improving the genericness and convenience of the resulting code, where a same function interface can enclose a group of functions that perform the same functionality but with inputs/output variables of different data types. Thirdly, it includes a variety of generic functions with an emphasis on array operations, such as rotation, flipping, cropping, padding, fast Fourier transform, Gaussian blurring, interpolation, and so on. We name this package FLIP – a generic Fortran Library based on Interfaces and Templates.

Improving Process Level Understanding of Boundary Layer Winds over the Northeast U.S. Shelf: The Third Wind Forecast Improvement Project (WFIP3)

The third Wind Forecast Improvement Project (WFIP3), a U.S. Department of Energy and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration sponsored investigation, sought to improve understanding of the physical phenomena in the atmosphere and ocean that dictate the structure and variability of wind and thermodynamic fields within the marine atmospheric boundary layer. WFIP3 focused on mesoscale and submesoscale flows -- including sea breezes, low-level jets, low-level clouds, and coastal storms -- and the ability of advanced numerical model parameterizations to represent them within fully coupled oceanic and atmospheric modeling systems and foundational weather forecast models. WFIP3 conducted a comprehensive 18-month observational study over the Northeast U.S. outer continental shelf, a high-use coastal zone, using a 3D multiscale sensor array to highly resolve the temporal, vertical, and horizontal structure of the coupled atmospheric and oceanic boundary layers. Multiple land-based study sites adjacent to the coastal ocean observed surface meteorology and vertical profiles of atmospheric properties via passive infrared and microwave radiometers, active lidars and radars, and radiosondes. At sea, an array of surface flux buoys and two vertical profiling lidar buoys observed both atmospheric and oceanic properties, augmented by land-based oceanographic radar systems and routine ship-based surveys. Intensive observations of the marine atmospheric boundary layer over the ocean was done from an air-sea interaction flux tower and extended deployments of a large autonomous barge platform. Numerous critical forecasting phenomena were observed that are being evaluated within regional coupled and uncoupled modeling systems, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's foundational High-Resolution Rapid Refresh forecast model.

Data for A Generalized Platform for Artificial Intelligence-powered Autonomous Protein Engineering

Proteins are the molecular machines of life with numerous applications in energy, health, and sustainability. However, engineering proteins with desired functions for practical applications remains slow, expensive, and specialist-dependent. Here we report a generally applicable platform for autonomous enzyme engineering that integrates machine learning and large language models with biofoundry automation to eliminate the need for human intervention, judgement, and domain expertise. Requiring only an input protein sequence and a quantifiable way to measure fitness, this automated platform can be applied to engineer a wide array of proteins. As a proof of concept, we engineer Arabidopsis thaliana halide methyltransferase (AtHMT) for a 90-foldimprovement in substrate preference and 16-fold improvement in ethyl-transferase activity, along with developing a Yersinia mollaretii phytase (YmPhytase) variant with 26-fold improvement in activity at neutral pH. This is accomplished in four rounds over 4 weeks, while requiring construction and characterization of fewer than 500 variants for each enzyme. This platform for autonomous experimentation paves the way for rapid advancements across diverse industries, from medicine and biotechnology to renewable energy and sustainable chemistry.

Interferometric focal planes

We propose arrays of integrated interferometers to characterize the mutual intensity on focal planes. While focal coherence measurement does not increase the aperture-limited spatial bandpass, it can increase Shannon information capacity relative to irradiance measurement by increasing the number of degrees of freedom per Nyquist sample. We describe a sampling model for interferometric measurement using arrays of 2-port Mach-Zehnder interferometers and show within this model that interferometric focal planes enable more accurate estimation of prototypical scene parameters.

Beam combining of high-power terahertz lasers with semiconductor metasurface gratings

Spectral beam combining (SBC) of an array of single-mode lasers has the potential for realizing a chip-scale electrically tunable multispectral laser source without any moving parts and with emission at closely spaced discrete frequencies. Here, we demonstrate SBC of an array of single-mode THz quantum-cascade lasers (QCLs) with small frequency spacing. Semiconductor-based metasurface THz blazed gratings are developed for integration with QCLs in a compact cryocooler setup. Single-lobed beams of four QCLs emitting around 3.2 THz and spectrally separated by ~14 GHz are combined to achieve collinear propagation of spatially overlapped and collimated beams in the far field with ≲ 0.1° of pointing error. Peak optical power in the range 50–100 mW is detected from each of the QCLs after combining. The dense frequency spacing in our method provides a pathway to incorporate tens of QCLs on a chip to realize a high-power discretely tunable THz laser source for applications in THz spectroscopy.

Integrated photonic Galton board and its application for photon counting

The Galton board is a desktop probability machine traditionally used to visualize the principles of statistical physics from classical particles. Here, we demonstrate a photonic Galton board that enables on-chip observation of statistics from single-photon interference. The photonic Galton board consists of a directional coupler matrix terminated by an array of superconducting nanowire detectors to provide spatiotemporal resolution. This design also allows for photon-number-resolving capability, making it suitable for high-speed photon counting. Our results demonstrate the compatibility between single-photon detector array and photonic integrated circuits, paving the way for implementing on-chip large-scale quantum optics experiments and photonic quantum computing.

Astigmatism-free 3D optical tweezer control for rapid atom rearrangement

Reconfigurable neutral-atom arrays are a promising platform for quantum computing, quantum simulation, and quantum metrology, but atom transport using frequency-chirped acousto-optic deflectors (AODs) is limited by chirp-induced acoustic lensing and trajectory distortion. We address these limitations using a three-dimensional acousto-optic deflector lens (3D-AODL), a design predicted to reduce long-range transport times by more than a factor of two. We further introduce fading-Shepard waveforms that circumvent finite AOD bandwidth, enabling sustained axial displacement. We demonstrate unrestricted three-dimensional optical-tweezer motion over a 200 μm × 200 μm × 136 μm volume with velocities exceeding 4.2 m/s. Arbitrary three-dimensional control of optical-tweezer trajectories enables rapid atom rearrangement and dynamical engineering of optical potentials in tweezer arrays and optical lattices. This capability advances quantum control and atom manipulation in neutral-atom quantum processors by enabling faster rearrangement, higher clock rates, and scalable sorting in complex geometries.

Transfer learning for metamaterial design and simulation

Abstract We demonstrate transfer learning as a tool to improve the efficacy of training deep learning models based on residual neural networks (ResNets). Specifically, we examine its use for study of multi-scale electrically large metasurface arrays under open boundary conditions in electromagnetic metamaterials. Our aim is to assess the efficiency of transfer learning across a range of problem domains that vary in their resemblance to the original base problem for which the ResNet model was initially trained. We use a quasi-analytical discrete dipole approximation (DDA) method to simulate electrically large metasurface arrays to obtain ground truth data for training and testing of our deep neural network. Our approach can save significant time for examining novel metasurface designs by harnessing the power of transfer learning, as it effectively mitigates the pervasive data bottleneck issue commonly encountered in deep learning. We demonstrate that for the best case when the transfer task is sufficiently similar to the target task, a new task can be effectively trained using only a few data points yet still achieve a test mean absolute relative error of 3 % with a pre-trained neural network, realizing data reduction by a factor of 1000.

Proximal Observations of Epicentral Infrasound Generated by Shallow Low-Magnitude Earthquakes in the Permian Basin, West Texas

Infrasound generated by earthquakes and explosions is generally detected at receivers at epicentral distances of hundreds to thousands of kilometers. However, proximal (<50 km) observations are especially important for low-magnitude earthquakes and low-yield explosions that may not generate signals capable of being detected at great ranges. Here, in this study, we present on the signals detected on an infrasound array 3 km away from two M L 2.9 earthquakes in the Permian Basin of west Texas. Local infrasound (LIS), generated at receivers during the passage of seismic waves, was detected following each earthquake. Epicentral infrasound (EIS), created at or near the epicenter and propagating away as a sound wave, was also detected. Array processing methods show that the EIS signals arrive from the same direction as the earthquake epicenters and at acoustic speeds. To our knowledge, these are the first observations of laterally propagating EIS at proximal ranges following an earthquake of any magnitude.
