National Educators' Workshop: Update 2003. Standard Experiments in Engineering, Materials Science, and Technology

The 18th Annual National Educators Workshop [NEW:Update 2003] was a part of NASA Langley s celebration of the Centennial of Controlled, Powered Flight by Orville and Wilbur Wright on December 17, 1903. The conference proceedings from NEW:Update 2003 reflect the Flight 100 theme by first providing a historic perspective on the remarkable accomplishments of the Wright Brothers. The historical perspective set the stag for insights into aeronautics and aerospace structures and materials now and into the future. The NEW:Update 2003 proceedings provide valuable resources to educators and students in the form of visuals, experiments and demonstrations for classes/labs at levels ranging from precollege through college education.

Structural studies on carbon materials for advanced space technology. Part 1: Structure and oxidation behavior of some carbon/carbon composite materials

The microstructure and some microstructural effects of oxidation have been investigated for laminar carbon fiber cloth/cloth binder matrix composite materials. It was found that cloth wave is important in determining the macrostructure of the composites X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the composites were more graphitic than the constituent fiber phases, indicating a graphitic binder matrix phase. Various tests which were conducted to investigate specific properties of the material are described. It was learned that under the moderate temperature and oxidant flow conditions studied, C-700, 730 materials exhibit superior oxidation resistance primarily because of the inhibiting influence of the graphitized binder matrix.

Developing Materials and Coating Technologies for Mitigation of Lunar Dust Adhesion and Abrasion

Lunar regolith was first identified as a major issue during the Apollo missions. There are three characteristics of lunar regolith that cause issues: small size, rough surface topology, and particle charge. The lack of a magnetosphere allows solar wind to bombard the lunar surface which results in the regolith becoming charged. These charged particles will adhere to most surfaces and degrade thermal control systems. The lack of atmosphere and surface liquids on the lunar surface results in the regolith’s small particle size, abrasive topology, and chemical reactivity. When the dust adheres to a surface, or the lunar lander exhaust kicks up dust regolith, it can impair instrument or thermal control system function, abrade optical surfaces, diminish range of motion, and mechanically degrade soft-goods such as gloves and astronaut suits. All of these examples were experienced during the Apollo missions. The objective of this study was to select and evaluate abrasion-resistant ceramic materials for application on the lunar landing equipment.

Instantiation of the Damara Tern Platform for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies (AMMT) Program Collaborative Data Management

This work package focused on deploying an instance of the Damara Tern platform to support AMMT collaborative research activities. The objectives were to provide selected AMMT collaborators with access to a shared environment for capturing operations, trackables, and associated metadata, and to implement data entry functionalities that reflect site-specific procedures. Key activities included creating configurable, schema-driven entry forms and validating the data collection process. The report details the deployment process, the platform infrastructure, and the implemented data entry workflows, providing a reference for end users and establishing a foundation for future production-scale deployments.

Fracture technology for brittle materials

Ceramics materials have the potential for use in high-temperature, fuel-efficient engines. However, because these materials are brittle, their fracture characteristics must be well documented prior to their application. Thus Lewis is working to understand the fracture and strength properties of brittle ceramic and ceramic matrix materials. An understanding of fracture properties aids both designers who are attempting to design high-temperature structures and materials scientists who seek to design more temperature-resistant materials. Both analytical and experimental approaches to fracture analysis are being taken. Methods for testing fracture toughness, crack growth resistance, and strength are being developed. The failure mechanisms at both room and elevated temperatures are also being investigated. Such investigations aid materials scientists in developing better high-temperature materials. Of concern is the anisotropy of ceramic materials and the experimental verification of ceramic design codes that will allow brittle material behavior to be accurately predicted at high temperature.

Orbit transfer rocket engine technology program: Oxygen materials compatibility testing

Particle impact and frictional heating tests of metals in high pressure oxygen, are conducted in support of the design of an advanced rocket engine oxygen turbopump. Materials having a wide range of thermodynamic properties including heat of combustion and thermal diffusivity were compared in their resistance to ignition and sustained burning. Copper, nickel and their alloys were found superior to iron based and stainless steel alloys. Some materials became more difficult to ignite as oxygen pressure was increased from 7 to 21 MPa (1000 to 3000 psia).
