High-velocity ultraviolet iron, silicon, oxygen, and sulfur absorption features associated with the remnant of SN 1006

New low-dispersion IUE spectra of a faint sdOb star located in a direction near the center of the SN 1006 remnant are presented. The UV spectrum of the star exhibits several strong absorption features which are uncharacteristic of its optical sdOB star classification. The identification by Wu et al. (1983) of very broad absorption features at 1610, 2370, 2600 A as Fe II gas associated with the SN 1006 remnant is supported. The observed Fe II line profiles indicate a concentration of Fe(+) toward the remnant's center with a radial velocity range on the order of + or - 5000 km/s. Strong absorption lines at 1281, 1331, and 1420 A are interpreted as originating from clumps of O-, Si- and S-rich ejecta with central radial velocities in the range 5000-6500 km/s. The presence in the SN 1006 remnant of an expanding sphere of iron-rich ejecta interior to O-, Si-, and S-rich clumps of ejecta having velocities over the maximum seen for the Fe II absorbing gas is consistent with type Ia Sn observations and carbon deflagration models.

Mass loss in a B2 IIIe star - Omega Orionis 1978-1984

A combination of long-term optical polarimetric, photometric, spectrometric, and UV spectral data has confirmed that all the observed portions of Omega Ori's outer atmosphere are variable on a variety of time scales. The shortest confirmed variations are detectable over a few hours, and the longest changes are observed on time scales of years. A straightforward interpretation of the available data is that the continuum polarization, continuum-magnitude changes, and color changes produced are in a presumably equatorial disk close to the stellar photosphere.

Real-time data compressor for Eos-class missions

A conceptual design for a real-time VLSI compressor capable of processing rate up to one gigabit per second is presented. This scheme is capable of providing a three-to-one distortion-free data reduction factor to both the High Resolution Imaging Spectrometer and processed SAR imaging data. The design uses a VLSI parallel/piplined architecture capable of processing at a real time rate. The design consists of a parallel array of VLSI compressor modules. Each module is built on a single customized VLSI chip using existing state-of-the-art semiconductor technology.

Advanced composite turboprops - Modeling, structural, and dynamic analyses

This paper presents a structural and dynamic analysis of a scaled-down wind tunnel model propfan blade made from fiber composites. This blade is one of a series of propfan blades that have been tested at the NASA Lewis Research Center wind tunnel facilities. The blade is highly swept and twisted and of the spar/shell construction. Due to the complexity of the blade geometry and its high performance, it is subjected to much higher loads and tends to be much less stable than conventional blades. The structural and dynamic analyses of the blade were performed using the NASA-Lewis COBSTRAN computer code. COBSTRAN is designed to generate the mesh and calculate the anisotropic material properties for composite blade analysis. Comparison of analytical and experimental mode shapes and frequencies are shown, verifying the model development and analysis techniques used. The methodologies and programs developed for this analysis are directly applicable to other propfan blades.

Efficient implementation of essentially non-oscillatory shock-capturing schemes

In the computation of discontinuous solutions of hyperbolic conservation laws, TVD (total-variation-diminishing), TVB (total-variation-bounded) and the recently developed ENO (essentially non-oscillatory) schemes have proven to be very useful. In this paper two improvements are discussed: a simple TVD Runge-Kutta type time discretization, and an ENO construction procedure based on fluxes rather than on cell averages. These improvements simplify the schemes considerably - especially for multi-dimensional problems or problems with forcing terms. Preliminary numerical results are also given.

Measuring Thermal Conductivities Of Rough Specimens

Thermal conductivity of irregularly surfaced specimen measured more accurately and reliably by use of heat-transfer adhesive establishing contact between specimen and reference standards. Method useful when specimen made up of fragments of material. Adhesive ensures good thermal contact to pieces not matching others in height. In rough-surfaced or unequally sized specimens, heat-flow pattern becomes distorted, and temperatures at measurement points do not accurately represent those throughout reference standards and specimen. Filling voids with conductive adhesive restores nearly uniform distribution heat flow.

Evaluation of three turbulence models for the prediction of steady and unsteady airloads

Two dimensional quasi-three dimensional Navier-Stokes solvers were used to predict the static and dynamic airload characteristics of airfoils. The following three turbulence models were used: the Baldwin-Lomax algebraic model, the Johnson-King ODE model for maximum turbulent shear stress, and a two equation k-e model with law-of-the-wall boundary conditions. It was found that in attached flow the three models have good agreement with experimental data. In unsteady separated flows, these models give only a fair correlation with experimental data.

Essentially non-oscillatory shock capturing methods applied to turbulence amplification in shock wave calculations

ENO (essentially non-oscillatory) schemes can provide uniformly high order accuracy right up to discontinuities while keeping sharp, essentially non-oscillatory shock transitions. Recently, an efficient implementation of ENO schemes was obtained based on fluxes and TVD Runge-Kutta time discretizations. The resulting code is very simple to program for multi-dimensions. ENO schemes are especially suitable for computing problems with both discontinuities and fine structures in smooth regions, such as shock interaction with turbulence, for which results for 1-D and 2-D Euler equations are presented. Much better resolution is observed by using third order ENO schemes than by using second order TVD schemes for such problems.

On the microphysics of microbursts

The effects on microbursts of precipitation loading, and cooling of the downdraft due to graupel/hail melting and rain evaporation, were studied, using numerical models. The results for the microburst index indicate a low value for the weak microburst and a higher value for the strong microburst. The relative magnitude of the various terms indicate the importance of the microphysical processes. For the dry microburst the evaporation and loading effects are comparable (1.56 and 1.75 respectively) but 5 to 6 times the magnitude of the melting effect. For a wet, tropical microburst, the loading and melting terms are most important. The intermediate Denver case shows loading as the largest term, followed by evaporation and melting.

Contamination of liquid oxygen by pressurized gaseous nitrogen

The penetration of pressurized gaseous nitrogen (GN2) into liquid oxygen (LOX) was investigated experimentally in the 7-inch High Temperature Tunnel, the pilot tunnel for the 8-foot High Temperature Tunnel (8'HTT) at Langley Research Center. A preliminary test using a nuclear monitor revealed the extent of the liquid nitrogen (LN2) build-up at the LOX interface as a function of GN2 pressure. Then an adaptation of the differential flash vaporization technique was used to determine the binary diffusivity of the LOX-LN2 system at a temperature of 90.2 K. The measured value D equals 0.000086 sq cm/s + or - 25 percent together with two prior measurements at lower temperatures revealed an excellent fit to the Arrhenius equation, yielding a pre-exponential factor D sub 0 equals 0.0452 sq cm/s and an activation enthalpy H equals 1.08 kcal/mol. At a pressure of 1700 psi and holding time of 15 min, the penetration of LN2 into LOX (to a 1 percent contamination level) was found to be 0.9 cm, indicating but minimal impact upon 8'HTT operations.

Two stage sorption type cryogenic refrigerator including heat regeneration system

A lower stage chemisorption refrigeration system physically and functionally coupled to an upper stage physical adsorption refrigeration system is disclosed. Waste heat generated by the lower stage cycle is regenerated to fuel the upper stage cycle thereby greatly improving the energy efficiency of a two-stage sorption refrigerator. The two stages are joined by disposing a first pressurization chamber providing a high pressure flow of a first refrigerant for the lower stage refrigeration cycle within a second pressurization chamber providing a high pressure flow of a second refrigerant for the upper stage refrigeration cycle. The first pressurization chamber is separated from the second pressurization chamber by a gas-gap thermal switch which at times is filled with a thermoconductive fluid to allow conduction of heat from the first pressurization chamber to the second pressurization chamber.

Regressed relations for forced convection heat transfer in a direct injection stratified charge rotary engine

Currently, the heat transfer equation used in the rotary combustion engine (RCE) simulation model is taken from piston engine studies. These relations have been empirically developed by the experimental input coming from piston engines whose geometry differs considerably from that of the RCE. The objective of this work was to derive equations to estimate heat transfer coefficients in the combustion chamber of an RCE. This was accomplished by making detailed temperature and pressure measurements in a direct injection stratified charge (DISC) RCE under a range of conditions. For each specific measurement point, the local gas velocity was assumed equal to the local rotor tip speed. Local physical properties of the fluids were then calculated. Two types of correlation equations were derived and are described in this paper. The first correlation expresses the Nusselt number as a function of the Prandtl number, Reynolds number, and characteristic temperature ratio; the second correlation expresses the forced convection heat transfer coefficient as a function of fluid temperature, pressure and velocity.

The design of an onboard digital Doppler processor for a spaceborne scatterometer

A digital Doppler processor, which will permit the Doppler center frequency of the measurement cell bandwidths to be adjusted to compensate for the effects of the earth's rotation, will be used in the next NASA spaceborn scatterometer known as NSCAT. The authors describe the design and genesis of the NSCAT digital Doppler processor and discusses the performance tradeoff issues that were evaluated during the design phase. In this FFT (fast Fourier transform)-based technique, computation of the adjustment to the cell center frequencies will be done onboard using an approximate expression for the Doppler shift of the cell center versus orbit time. This technique also permits modification of the parameters used to locate the radar-backscatter-coefficient measurement cells by ground command in response to orbit changes.

Numerical simulation of three-dimensional transonic turbulent projectile aerodynamics by TVD schemes

The two-dimensional symmetric TVD scheme proposed by Yee has been extended to and investigated for three-dimensional thin-layer Navier-Stokes simulation of complex aerodynamic problems. An existing three-dimensional Navier-stokes code based on the beam and warming algorithm is modified to provide an option of using the TVD algorithm and the flow problem considered is a transonic turbulent flow past a projectile with sting at ten-degree angle of attack. Numerical experiments conducted for three flow cases, free-stream Mach numbers of 0.91, 0.96 and 1.20 show that the symmetric TVD algorithm can provide surface pressure distribution in excellent agreement with measured data; moreover, the rate of convergence to attain a steady state solution is about two times faster than the original beam and warming algorithm.
