Impact Assessment of All-Sky TROPICS Microwave Observations on the NASA GEOS Analyses and Forecasts and Progress to Use the Data in the JEDI-GEOS Analysis System

The NASA Time-Resolved Observations of Precipitation structure and storm Intensity with a Constellation of Smallsats (TROPICS) mission is a constellation of small satellites carrying state-of-art microwave temperature and humidity sounders with 12 channels between 91 GHz and 205 GHz frequency. Including TROPICS-pathfinder, launched on 30 June 2021, five TROPICS CubeSats operate and provide temperature and humidity data to NWP and atmospheric retrieval communities. This study is dedicated to evaluating the impact of the TROPICS satellite constellation microwave observations in numerical weather prediction (NWP) using the NASA Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS). The TROPICS-01 (TROPICS-Pathfinder), TROPICS-03, TROPICS-05, and TROPICS-06 data in all-sky conditions over the ocean during the period of 25 July 2023 and 6 September 2023 are used for assessing forecast impacts on global NWP analysis and five-day forecasts. A series of experiments are carried out to measure the benefits of assimilating observations from only temperature sounders, water vapor sounders, and both sounders. Statistical analysis of the Observing System Experiments (OSEs) results has shown incremental improvements in global model forecast skills for critical geophysical parameters, including temperature, winds, and geopotential heights. The results demonstrate the potential of the TROPICS-like data to positively impact NWP by adding new information to the current observation and forecast system. In another set of experiments, the TROPICS-03, TROPICS-05, and TROPICS-06 data sets are added to the TROPICS-01 one by one to evaluate the impacts of increasing the revisit rate of TROPICS satellite measurements on NWP analysis for a tropical cyclone’s dynamical and microphysical structures. This study offers important insights into the capabilities of a new generation of small satellite microwave radiometers based on emerging technologies, including their unique measurements at 118 GHz and 205 GHz that are not available in traditional operational microwave sounders. Finally, the efforts to implement these new developments for TROPICS in the JEDI-GEOS atmospheric data assimilation system are in progress, and preliminary results from cycled JEDI-GEOS data assimilation experiments are presented.

Automated Loads Analysis System (ATLAS)

ATLAS is a generalized solution that can be used for launch vehicles. ATLAS is used to produce modal transient analysis and quasi-static analysis results (i.e., accelerations, displacements, and forces) for the payload math models on a specific Shuttle Transport System (STS) flight using the shuttle math model and associated forcing functions. This innovation solves the problem of coupling of payload math models into a shuttle math model. It performs a transient loads analysis simulating liftoff, landing, and all flight events between liftoff and landing. ATLAS utilizes efficient and numerically stable algorithms available in MSC/NASTRAN.

Space Shuttle/TDRSS communication and tracking systems analysis

In order to evaluate the technical and operational problem areas and provide a recommendation, the enhancements to the Tracking and Data Delay Satellite System (TDRSS) and Shuttle must be evaluated through simulation and analysis. These enhancement techniques must first be characterized, then modeled mathematically, and finally updated into LinCsim (analytical simulation package). The LinCsim package can then be used as an evaluation tool. Three areas of potential enhancements were identified: shuttle payload accommodations, TDRSS SSA and KSA services, and shuttle tracking system and navigation sensors. Recommendations for each area were discussed.

The CCD/Transit Instrument (CTI) data-analysis system

An account is given of the Kitt Peak CCD/Transit Instrument's software for the automated archiving, analysis, and interrogation of each observation night's nearly 450 Mbytes of image data. The analysis phase is performed by a pair of linked algorithms, one of which operates on the absolute pixel-values and the other on the spatial derivative of the data, so that both isolated and merged images are reliably detected in a single pass. This is in due course followed by the automatic comparison of each new detection with a set of predefined templates in parameter space, in order to find such interesting objects as supernovae, quasars, and variable stars.

Microwave landing system autoland system analysis

The objective was to investigate the ability of present day aircraft equipped with automatic flight control systems to fly advanced Microwave Landing Systems (MLS) approaches. The tactical approach used to achieve this objective included reviewing the design and autoland operation of the MD-80 aircraft, simulating the MLS approaches using a batch computer program, and assessing the performance of the autoland system from computer generated data. The results showed changes were required to present Instrument Landing System (ILS) procedures to accommodate the new MLS curved paths. It was also shown that in some cases, changes to the digital flight guidance systems would be required so that an autoland could be performed.

Environmental control and life support systems analysis for a Space Station life sciences animal experiment

NASA's Langley and Goddard facilities have evaluated the effects of animal science experiments on the Space Station's Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) by means of computer-aided analysis, assuming an animal colony consisting of 96 rodents and eight squirrel monkeys. Thirteen ECLSS options were established for the reclamation of metabolic oxygen and waste water. Minimum cost and weight impacts on the ECLSS are found to accrue to the system's operation in off-nominal mode, using electrochemical CO2 removal and a static feed electrolyzer for O2 generation.

Computerized systems analysis and optimization of aircraft engine performance, weight, and life cycle costs

The computational techniques utilized to determine the optimum propulsion systems for future aircraft applications and to identify system tradeoffs and technology requirements are described. The characteristics and use of the following computer codes are discussed: (1) NNEP - a very general cycle analysis code that can assemble an arbitrary matrix fans, turbines, ducts, shafts, etc., into a complete gas turbine engine and compute on- and off-design thermodynamic performance; (2) WATE - a preliminary design procedure for calculating engine weight using the component characteristics determined by NNEP; (3) POD DRG - a table look-up program to calculate wave and friction drag of nacelles; (4) LIFCYC - a computer code developed to calculate life cycle costs of engines based on the output from WATE; and (5) INSTAL - a computer code developed to calculate installation effects, inlet performance and inlet weight. Examples are given to illustrate how these computer techniques can be applied to analyze and optimize propulsion system fuel consumption, weight, and cost for representative types of aircraft and missions.

PowerAnalytics.jl: User-Centric Power Systems Analysis in Julia

The National Laboratory of the Rockies recently released version 1 of PowerAnalytics.jl, an analysis module for the outputs of its popular open-source electrical power systems modeling platform Sienna. It features an extensible framework - based on the flexible selecting of components, the execution of arbitrary metrics on them, and a familiar DataFrames-based output interface with embedded metadata - to process results in the Sienna style while keeping the interface as simple as possible for non-Julia experts. Here, I describe the package and where it fits into the Sienna ecosystem, how I harnessed user-centered design and Julia features to achieve beginner friendliness without sacrificing performance and expressibility, and what lessons might be drawn from the package's design and implementation.

Job-mix modeling and system analysis of an aerospace multiprocessor.

An aerospace guidance computer organization, consisting of multiple processors and memory units attached to a central time-multiplexed data bus, is described. A job mix for this type of computer is obtained by analysis of Apollo mission programs. Multiprocessor performance is then analyzed using: 1) queuing theory, under certain 'limiting case' assumptions; 2) Markov process methods; and 3) system simulation. Results of the analyses indicate: 1) Markov process analysis is a useful and efficient predictor of simulation results; 2) efficient job execution is not seriously impaired even when the system is so overloaded that new jobs are inordinately delayed in starting; 3) job scheduling is significant in determining system performance; and 4) a system having many slow processors may or may not perform better than a system of equal power having few fast processors, but will not perform significantly worse.

IAC control system analysis development

The MultiOptimal Differential Equation Language (MODEL) is described. It provides a means for generating numerical solutions to systems of differential equations using a digital computer. The notation of this language is similar to that usually used in describing physical systems by differential equations. Thus, the learning process is simplified, programming becomes easier, and debugging is more readily accomplished. Programs written in the MultiOptimal Differential Equation Language are machine translated into FORTRAN 4 code which is optimal in several respects. The interactive version of MODEL makes use of interactive system routines so that the user may observe the solution as it is being generated and interact with the program in a manner similar to that associated with analog simulation. The DISCOS-Control version of the MODEL simulation language is used to describe the control system for a plant which is modelled by the DISCOS program. DISCOS plant variables may be referenced in the control system description and all the sensor signals, coupling torques, momentum devices and external loads are automatically linked to the DISCOS plant model.
