2020 Can Do Colorado E-Bike Mini Pilot Program Study

### The Colorado Energy Office conducted a mini pilot program study as part of the Can Do Colorado initiative, providing e-bikes to 13 low-income participants. The program aimed to encourage energy-efficient transportation during the COVID-19 pandemic as transit services were reduced and people were concerned about exposure. The insights garnered from this small-scale pilot study informed the design of a full-scale, 2-year pilot in locations across Colorado. For more information about the mini pilot program, see NLR's [Preliminary Results Report](https://www.nlr.gov/docs/fy21osti/79657.pdf). Micromobility options such as e-bikes offer a solution for improving energy efficiency for short-distance trips, especially in urban areas. Pedal-assist e-bikes use an electric motor and battery to help power the bike. The motor amplifies the power behind each pedal stroke, augmenting the energy you put into the bike. #### Data Collection Agency The Colorado Energy Office conducted the survey. #### Survey Methodology Participants in the program received a Momentum LaFree E+ e-bike (Class 1) and accessories at no cost and manually submitted travel data and feedback for 3 months using the CanBikeCo App. The smartphone app, developed in partnership with NLR, used a customized version of the [NLR OpenPATH platform](https://www.nlr.gov/transportation/openpath.html). #### Survey Records and Data Survey records include a total of 13 participants. This dataset contains 3 months of end-to-end, multimodal travel data manually submitted via smartphone app by 13 low-income essential workers in the greater Denver area. The data includes distance, mode (e.g., e-bike, car, transit), trip purpose, and demographic information.

Seismic Monitoring near Ithaca, New York, Reveals Nonuniform Distribution of Microseismicity in an Intraplate Region

Abstract Cornell University intends to use a deep direct-use geothermal system to heat its Ithaca, New York, campus. In preparation for this project, the Cornell Seismic Network has been monitoring the background seismicity in this intraplate region since 2019. From January 2020 to June 2023, 95 events were detected within 20 km of the proposed geothermal well site, with local magnitudes ranging from −1.02 to 0.56. None of these events appear in regional or national catalogs. Events locate in a narrow geographic band, with one-fourth exhibiting multimodal hypocentral probability peaks both near the surface and at 1–4 km depth. We relocate events with a joint hypocenter and 1D velocity model inversion, in addition to a fully nonlinear method, and then compare observations with synthetic waveforms. Together, these approaches provide strong evidence for >95% of events locating at the surface or within the 3-km-thick sedimentary sequence. We explore how anthropogenic activity and regional topographic stress may contribute to frequent surficial events. This information is critical for characterizing the background microseismicity for comparison during future geothermal operations. Ithaca’s geology of Paleozoic sediments overlying Precambrian crystalline basement is typical of many continental interiors, so these results also provide insight into intraplate microseismicity patterns.

Toward particle accelerator machine state embeddings as a modality for large language models

Understanding and diagnosing the state of a particle accelerator requires navigating high-dimensional control system data, often involving hundreds of interdependent parameters. We propose a novel multimodal embedding framework that jointly learns representations of machine states from both numerical control system readouts and natural language descriptions. This enables the translation of complex machine conditions into human-readable summaries while maintaining fidelity to the underlying physical system. The obtained embeddings are subsequently adapted to an open-weights large language model via cross-attention conditioning. We demonstrate a first implementation trained on European XFEL machine state data. This work covers the embedding model architecture, training methodology, and presents initial examples demonstrating the model's capabilities in action. Due to the general concept of machine state, the model can be easily adapted to other facilities and control system environments.

U.S. Freight Transload Facilities Dataset

The U.S. Freight Transload Facilities Dataset provides location information (latitude, longitude, zip, city, county, state)for more than 9,000 facilities across 50 U.S. States where freight may be transferred between waterways, railways, and roadways. The dataset lists the known modes and available direction(s) for freight transfers at each facility as of 2024. The U.S. Freight Transload Facilities dataset was built by mining and fusing several public sources, such as the USACE Master Docks Plus, the USDOT National Transportation Atlas Database (NTAD), files from the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA), and the industry publication Bulk Transloader. The dataset constitutes a key piece of a multimodal freight transportation network and routing algorithm developed by USACE-ERDC. The dataset is shared as a .csv file. The dataset is published for research purposes and should not be considered exhaustive or authoritative.

Single-molecule imaging of lignocellulose deconstruction by SCATTIRSTORM microscopy

The goal of this project is to build a multimodal optical microscope to measure the binding, processive degradation, and pausing behaviors of cellulases as they interact with and degrade both synthetic and naturally occurring lignocellulosic walls. To achieve this, we will use high spatio-temporal single-molecule imaging to track cellulases, while visualizing specific molecular components of cellulose, lignin and hemicellulose, that make up their lignocellulose substrate. The microscope will combine Interferometric Scattering (iSCAT), which provides unprecedented spatiotemporal resolution; Total Internal Reflection Fluorescence (TIRF), which provides single-molecule resolution of multiple fluorophore-labeled molecules; and Stochastic Reconstruction (STORM), which allows for three-dimensional super-resolution imaging of intact plant cell walls during degradation. Initial studies will investigate cellulase dynamics on in vitro-assembled cell wall analogs, and later work will progress to using native plant cell walls.

Reaction engineering: a lost (and found) art for a decarbonized future [Slides]

The heart (or, perhaps more appropriately, the stomach) of any chemical manufacturing process is the reactor, where chemical and physical transformations occur under precisely controlled conditions. For traditional industrial processes, the design, optimization and operation of chemical reactors are extremely well developed, drawing upon the principles of chemistry, physics, calculus and economics. However, new-age process concepts proposing to use "exotic" reactors and/or sustainable inputs (e.g., renewable carbon resources, electrons, photons, plasma) face a dearth of well documented reaction engineering principles & design practices that eclipses their rapid adoption. This presentation features two vignettes of (the return of) reaction engineering in sustainable process science, first in the valorization of lignin from biomass, and second in understanding multimodal catalyst deactivation in industrial-scale reactors within the Catofin process for propane dehydrogenation. Overall, this seminar seeks to educate student researchers on practical means of advancing laboratory reactor technologies towards commercial practice.
