Capture resonance of the asteroid 1685 Toro by the earth.

The asteroid 1685 Toro has its perihelion inside the earth's orbit and a period which is 8/5 of that of the earth. A calculation of Toro's orbit covering 200 years shows that this asteroid at present is captured in resonance with the earth. The capture is due to the gravitational interaction at close encounters between the bodies.

Neutron emission following muon capture in Ce-142, Ce-140, Ba-138, and Sn-120.

Branching ratios to excited nuclear states formed after muon capture have been measured with Ge(Li) detectors. The delayed gamma rays were observed in studies of muonic Ce-142, Ce-140, Ba-138, and Sn-120, using separated isotopes. The resulting isotopes formed indicate at least a 60% probability of neutron emission upon muon capture, with the most likely product resulting from single-neutron emission. No evidence for delayed proton emission with a probability higher than 2% was found. Using our more precise energies for the observed nuclear transitions, we present revised energy levels schemes for La-141, La-139, Cs-137, and In-119.

Muon capture rates on O-16 leading to bound states of N-16.

A low-energy spectrum of gamma-rays following muon capture in O-16 was obtained with a high-resolution 1 cu cm Ge(Li) detector. The graph of the spectrum shows the separation of contaminant peaks from the 120 keV N-16 line. It is pointed out that there is a large discrepancy between the capture rate obtained in the investigation and results reported by Deutsch et al. (1969).

Transitional modes of motion and capture regions of vibroshock systems

A numerical analysis of the transitional modes of motion for a vibroshock system was conducted. The capture regions of the system are emphasized. The three initial parameters for a nonautonomous vibroshock system with one degree of freedom are identified as: (1) coordinates, (2) velocity, and (3) time. Mathematical models are developed to show the relationship of the parameters. Graphs are included to show the nature of the capture regions and to portray the trajectory of motion of mass with time, by solution of differential equations during increase and decrease in time.

Improved curve fits for the thermodynamic properties of equilibrium air suitable for numerical computation using time-dependent or shock-capturing methods, part 1

Simplified curve fits for the thermodynamic properties of equilibrium air were devised for use in either the time-dependent or shock-capturing computational methods. For the time-dependent method, curve fits were developed for p = p(e, rho), a = a(e, rho), and T = T(e, rho). For the shock-capturing method, curve fits were developed for h = h(p, rho) and T = T(p, rho). The ranges of validity for these curves fits were for temperatures up to 25,000 K and densities from 10 to the minus 7th power to 10 to the 3d power amagats. These approximate curve fits are considered particularly useful when employed on advanced computers such as the Burroughs ILLIAC 4 or the CDC STAR.

Meteoroid capture cell construction

A thin membrane covering the open side of a meteoroid capture cell causes an impacting meteoroid to disintegrate as it penetrates the membrane. The capture cell then contains and holds the meteoroid particles for later analysis.

Accretional capture of the moon

The effectiveness of accretional capture is studied with the aid of a simple model involving a small secondary body in a hyperbolic orbit which approaches a large primary body. When the separation is a minimum, the mass of the primary body increases. An investigation is conducted regarding the conditions under which this change in mass will result in an elliptic orbit with capture.

N2O analysis in the atmosphere via electron capture-gas chromatography

The potential of commercially available pulse-modulated electron capture detector (ECD)-equipped gas chromatographs for direct measurement of ambient levels of N2O is assessed. Since the sensitivity of ECD to N2O is directly proportional to the detector operating temperature and detector standing current, it is necessary to use a 'hot' ECD (250-350 C). The method is shown to be very precise with a standard error not exceeding 1% for automated analysis of ambient air samples. The technology is available to permit highly accurate routine direct analysis of N2O in the troposphere and stratosphere. Both captured air samples or direct real-time measurement from research vessels or airborne platforms are possible.

Control and stability problems of remote orbital capture

Certain space shuttle missions may require retrieval of passive spinning and precessing satellites. One proposed means of retrieval utilizes a free-flying teleoperator launched from the shuttle. A study of misalignment, stability, and certain control aspects during capture of an object is reported here. The approach used is to model the dynamics by a Lagrangian formulation and apply torque components to dissipate motion. Differential angular rates between teleoperator and object are assumed, and control responses after capture are reviewed.

Atomic electron correlation in nuclear electron capture

The effect of electron-electron Coulomb correlation on orbital electron capture by the nucleus was treated by the multiconfigurational Hartree-Fock approach. The theoretical Be-7 L/K capture ratio was found to be 0.086, and the Ar-37 M/L ratio, 0.102. Both ratios were smaller than the independent particle predictions. Measurements exist for the Ar M/L ratio, and agreement between theory and experiment was excellent.

Capturing and tracking performance of the horizontal guidance and control systems of the terminal configured vehicle

A twin-jet commercial transport equipped with digital navigation, guidance, and control systems and advanced electronic display system was used for airborne operational research. The results of flight tests which evaluated a second-order horizontal-path guidance control law and the autopilot and airplane response are presented. This evaluation was accomplished through analysis of recorded flight data and through pilot opinion of the airplane maneuvers during automatic path-capture scenarios and path tracking. Four different path captures were flown at a ground speed of approximately 160 knots and repeated at approximately 300 knots. Path tracking tracking error was measured in terms of cross track error along two paths: one pat at cruise speeds and one at airport-terminal-area speeds. The path tracking accuracy and the smoothness of the airplane maneuvers were judged satisfactory for high speeds; however, at lower speeds the control law design should be improved so that tracking will be more accurate for operations in the airport terminal area.

On the capture of the Moon

This paper studies the possibility of lunar capture depending on variations of the solar mass under certain well specified conditions and assumptions regarding the behaviour of the three-body dynamical system formed by the Sun, Earth and Moon. It is found that a large amount of decrease in the solar mass (approximately 37%) would be required to allow capture if the model of the planar restricted problem of three bodies is assumed, if the masses of the Earth and Moon did not change and if the angular momentum of the Sun-Earth system did not change. Such large mass-changes of the Sun can not be associated with radiation mass losses only with catastrophic events, such as stellar close approaches.

Electron-capture cross-sections for some astrophysical processes

Electron-capture cross sections are calculated and compared with existing experimental data. It is noted that the good agreement of the results with experimental data for the oxygen process suggests that the method given here can be successfully used for multielectron shell capture processes for intermediate and large incident energies. An explanation is given for the departure of the calculated cross sections from the experimental results for one of the processes at low relative energies. The theoretical results are seen as providing reasonably accurate cross sections for detailed modeling of Io's atmosphere.

A high-resolution measurement of the 2.223 MeV neutron capture line in a solar flare

An intense solar flare lasting 40 s was observed by the HEAO 3 gamma-ray spectrometer on November 9, 1979, at 3:05 UT. The flare was observed in four high-resolution germanium detectors as well as in five CsI shield detectors over an energy range of 100 keV to above 5 MeV. Of particular interest is a line feature at 2.2248 + or - 0.0010 MeV. The precise energy measurement provides unambiguous evidence that this is the (H-1)(n, gamma)(H-2) line resulting from neutron capture on hydrogen. An upper limit of 5 keV is found for the natural line width. The time dependence of the neutron capture line is discussed as well as the overall characteristics of the November 9 flare.

Long-term energy capture and the effects of optimizing wind turbine operating strategies

Methods of increasing energy capture without affecting the turbine design were investigated. The emphasis was on optimizing the wind turbine operating strategy. The operating strategy embodies the startup and shutdown algorithm as well as the algorithm for determining when to yaw (rotate) the axis of the turbine more directly into the wind. Using data collected at a number of sites, the time-dependent simulation of a MOD-2 wind turbine using various, site-dependent operating strategies provided evidence that site-specific fine tuning can produce significant increases in long-term energy capture as well as reduce the number of start-stop cycles and yawing maneuvers, which may result in reduced fatigue and subsequent maintenance.

Current oscillations in semi-insulating GaAs associated with field-enhanced capture of electrons by the major deep donor EL2

Current oscillations thermally activated by the release of electrons from deep levels in undoped semiinsulating GaAs were observed for the first time. They were attributed to electric field-enhanced capture of electrons by the dominant deep donor EL2 (antisite AsGa defect). This enhanced capture is due to the configurational energy barrier of EL2, which is readily penetrated by hot electrons.

Spectral methods for the Euler equations: Fourier methods and shock-capturing

Spectral methods for compressible flows are introduced in relation to finite difference and finite element techniques within the framework of the method of weighted residuals. Current spectral collocation methods are put in historical context. The basic concepts of Fourier spectral collocation methods are provided. Filtering strategies for shock-capturing approaches are also presented. Fourier shock capturing techniques are evaluated using a one dimensional, periodic astrophysical ""nozzle'' problem.
