Parameter Co-optimization for Hybrid Electric Vehicles Powertrain System Leveraging V2V/V2I Information

A parameter tuning based co-optimization scheme for the hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) powertrain system is designed to maximize the fuel efficiency. The optimization controlled input parameters are chosen based on sensitivity study of powertrain control parameters. The vehicle to vehicle (V2V) and vehicle to infrastructure information is another optimization input, to have the driving conditions taking in to considerations for maximizing fuel efficiency. The catalyst temperature is considered as an additional constraint as the speed to reach light-off temperature should not decrease during optimized operation. Neural network is used to develop a simplified yet equivalent model for the optimization problem model. We have achieved an average of 9.22% fuel savings for a random driving cycle on a Toyota Prius test model.

Deep Space Network Scheduling Using Multi-Objective Optimization with Uncertainty

We have developed a novel technique to incorporate uncertainty modeling within an evolutionary algorithm approach to multi-objective scheduling, with the goal of identifying a Pareto frontier (tradeoff curve) that recognizes the likelihood of events that can impact the schedule outcome. Our approach is particularly applicable to the generation of multiobjective optimized robust schedules, where objectives are assigned a service level, for example that we require an objective value to be greater than or equal to X with Y% confidence. We have demonstrated that such an approach can, for example, minimize scheduling on less reliable resources, based solely on a resource reliability model and not on any ad hoc heuristics. We have also investigated an alternative method of optimizing for robustness, in which we add to the set of objectives a failure risk objective to minimize. We compare the advantages and disadvantages of these two approaches. Future plans for further developing this technology include its application to space-based observatory scheduling problems.

Evolving Energy Efficient Convolutional Neural Networks

As deep neural networks have been deployed in more and more applications over the past half decade and are finding their way into an ever increasing number of operational systems, their energy consumption becomes a concern whether running in the datacenter or on edge devices. Hyperparameter optimization and automated network design for deep learning is a quickly growing field, but much of the focus has remained only on optimizing for the performance of the machine learning task. In this work, we demonstrate that the best performing networks created through this automated network design process have radically different computational characteristics (e.g. energy usage, model size, inference time), presenting the opportunity to utilize this optimization process to make deep learning networks more energy efficient and deployable to smaller devices. Optimizing for these computational characteristics is critical as the number of applications of deep learning continues to expand.

Optimization-based control using input convex neural networks

Input convex neural networks (ICNNs) are a family of deep learning models where the outputs are constructed to be convex functions of the inputs. By parameterizing system models using ICNNs, optimization-based control problems can be solved as convex optimization problems, leading to improved performance and robustness. This work proposes a novel framework where the control objective function and constraints are modelled using ICNNs. A case study of optimization-based control with output constraints is conducted on a process with input multiplicity and nonminimum phase behavior. The simulation results demonstrate improved economic yield compared with normal neural networks. Additionally, the input convexity formulation is compared with simple regularization techniques, and unique benefits such as improved data efficiency and robustness of the proposed formulation are shown. Finally, by explicitly incorporating prior knowledge about convexity, this framework provides a good balance between the universal approximation power of deep learning and computational feasibility required by control.

Differentiable Neural Architecture, Mixed Precision and Accelerator Co-Search

Quantization, effective Neural Network architecture, and efficient accelerator hardware are three important design paradigms to maximize accuracy and efficiency. Mixed Precision Quantization is a process of assigning different precision to different Neural Network layers for optimized inference. Neural Architecture Search (NAS) is a process of automatically designing the neural network for a task and can also be extended to search for the precision of each weight and activation matrix. In this paper, we develop the following three methods: (i) Fast Differentiable Hardware-aware Mixed Precision Quantization Search method to find optimal precision, (ii) Joint Differentiable hardware-aware Architecture and Mixed Precision Quantization Co-search, (iii) Joint Accelerator, Architecture, and Precision triple co-search to find best possibilities in all the three worlds. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed methods targeting Bitfusion accelerator by searching mixed precision models on MobilenetV2. We achieve better accuracy-latency trade-off models than the manually designed and previously proposed search methods.

AI Denoising to Accelerate Detector Simulation

Detector simulation is critical to experimental HEP; however this simulation (commonly done through toolkits such as Geant4) is computationally intensive. Performance can be improved somewhat through technical optimization, but more is needed. Using machine learning (ML) to accelerate simulation is a promising field, however efforts to use generative adversarial networks (GANs) or optimized autoencoders have faced issues. Using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for denoising has been successful in non-HEP applications such as image processing. This poster investigates the efficacy of using CNNs to denoise Geant4 simulations. This could increase the accuracy of simulations performed under settings designed to increase computational efficiency.

Adaptive Optimization of Aircraft Engine Performance Using Neural Networks

Preliminary results are presented on the development of an adaptive neural network based control algorithm to enhance aircraft engine performance. This work builds upon a previous National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) effort known as Performance Seeking Control (PSC). PSC is an adaptive control algorithm which contains a model of the aircraft's propulsion system which is updated on-line to match the operation of the aircraft's actual propulsion system. Information from the on-line model is used to adapt the control system during flight to allow optimal operation of the aircraft's propulsion system (inlet, engine, and nozzle) to improve aircraft engine performance without compromising reliability or operability. Performance Seeking Control has been shown to yield reductions in fuel flow, increases in thrust, and reductions in engine fan turbine inlet temperature. The neural network based adaptive control, like PSC, will contain a model of the propulsion system which will be used to calculate optimal control commands on-line. Hopes are that it will be able to provide some additional benefits above and beyond those of PSC. The PSC algorithm is computationally intensive, it is valid only at near steady-state flight conditions, and it has no way to adapt or learn on-line. These issues are being addressed in the development of the optimal neural controller. Specialized neural network processing hardware is being developed to run the software, the algorithm will be valid at steady-state and transient conditions, and will take advantage of the on-line learning capability of neural networks. Future plans include testing the neural network software and hardware prototype against an aircraft engine simulation. In this paper, the proposed neural network software and hardware is described and preliminary neural network training results are presented.

A novel technique for minimizing energy functional using neural networks

An energy functional describes the equilibrium state of a system. In this work, we present a novel technique, Functional Optimization using Neural Networks (FONN), for minimizing the system’s energy. FONN utilizes neural networks to process information at discrete grid points, considering their interactions with neighboring grid points, to update the state of the system. The training process involves formulating a loss function based on the system’s energy, and with the help of multiple fine-tuning steps, the method employs a progressive energy reduction technique that decreases the energy in multiple steps. FONN’s effectiveness is demonstrated across various problems, including the minimization of the heat and Lyapunov energy. Furthermore, the paper explores the minimization of the elastic bending energy with an area constraint.

Aerodynamic performance optimization of a rotor blade using a neural network as the analysis

This paper describes the use of neural networks as a replacement for rotor analyses in a conventional aerodynamic performance optimization procedure. The optimization procedure minimizes an objective function, a linear combination of horsepower required for hover, forward flight, and maneuver. The design variables are pretwist, taper initiation, taper ratio, and blade root chord. Constraints consist of limits on horsepower required (for hover, forward flight, and maneuver), stall, trim, and minimum tip chord. Neural network analyses agree with conventional analyses.

Improving Resiliency in Planning MW-Scale Medium and Heavy Duty EV Charging Stations Considering TSCOTS Optimization

Electrification of heavy-duty (HD) vehicles marks an important milestone and technical challenge in the electric vehicle (EV) industry and the public grid. However, implementing EV charging at this scale will necessitate that traditional truck stops be updated with EV charging infrastructure that could represent 10's of MW in electricity consumption. Furthermore, as the transportation sector is represented as critical infrastructure, supporting resiliency considerations in EV charging infrastructure will be critical. This paper proposes an optimization-based approach for optimally designing a MW-scale microgrid charging network. This approach transforms conventional designed truck stops into a reliable HDEV charging stations capable of overnight slow charging and 30-minute to 1 hour fast charging. Using a mixed-integer linear program formulation blending capacity planning and reliability constraints, an optimal network configuration can be solved for a proposed EV charging station that includes photovoltaic and battery energy storage capabilities.
