Effects of salinity and nutrients on metabolism and growth of Ulva lactuca: implications for bioremediation in San Diego Bay and Coastal Watershed
Our project sought to explore the ability of seaweed (Ulva lactuca) farms to clean polluted waterways of excess nitrogen and phosphorus through bioremediation. We addressed this goal in three primary ways. First, we worked with an undergraduate student from the Environmental Sciences Department at SDSU (Emily Bews) to examine how Ulva would perform under elevated nutrients and decreased salinity conditions, such as would be expected on the seaweed farms during periods of high rainwater runoff. This would show whether Ulva could indeed be grown on farms during these periods. We conducted laboratory experiments at SDSU’s CMIL (marine laboratory) using orthogonal combinations of two salinities and three nutrient loadings, and measured several aspects of Ulva physiology, namely growth, photosynthetic rates, chlorophyll fluorescence, and stable isotope analyses of Ulva’s tissues, and tissue uptake of phosphorus and nitrogen. Our results clearly show Ulva is an ideal candidate for using on farms during periods of heavy rains and takes up excess nutrients. The results of this were published in Marine Pollution Bulletin, with undergraduate Bews as lead author (Bews, E., L. Booher, T. Polizzi, C. Long, J-H Kim, MS Edwards. 2021. Effects of salinity and nutrients on metabolism and growth of Ulva lactuca: implications for bioremediation of coastal watersheds. Marine Pollution Bulletin 166: 121299.).
Understanding Commercial Building Energy Use in the Chicago to Green Bay and Madison Area: Building Stock Segmentation for Retrofit Planning
This report is part of the second phase of a publication series focusing on approximately 100 different local geographies, or "clusters." Each report provides characteristic features and energy data for commercial buildings in a specific area to help policy makers at the city, county, and state level better understand building energy use and emissions. This report breaks down the energy consumption and emissions of the building stock in the counties shown in Figure 2 by building type, building size, end use, energy consumption, emissions, and segment.
Understanding Multifamily Energy Use in the Chicago to Green Bay and Madison Area: Building Stock Segmentation for Retrofit Planning
This report is an addendum to a publication series that focuses on approximately 100 different local geographies, or "clusters". This addendum expands the report series to include large multifamily building characteristics as well as energy and emission data for each local geography. The intention of this addendum is to help policymakers at the city, county, and state levels better understand building energy use and emissions in large multifamily buildings.
ACRRF High-Bay Dose Calculations using MCNP (Part B)
ACRR radiation outputs through vertical cavities have been documented in two reports. In Part B, the maximum dose from the unshielded central cavity, FREC-II, and NRS is calculated to inform the safety basis. The maximum dose is ≈1430 mrem per 300 MJ, or ≈40,930 rem/hr for full-power operation. A verification study completes the V&V of the modeling. Supplementary studies of variance-reduction techniques, model sensitivities, and aircraft dose above the ACRRF are included.
Buoy - California - Wind Sentinel (130), Morro Bay - Processed Data
Processed data for various datasets.
Lidar - California - Leosphere Windcube 866 (130), Morro Bay - Processed Data
Processed daily lidar dataset.
California - Auxiliary Datasets for Buoy (130), Morro Bay / Derived Data
This dataset compiles results from different model-based hindcasts and instruments that measure environmental variables at the location of the associated lidar buoys. This dataset complements the lidar buoy measurements by providing longer time histories of selected environmental parameters. The data were extracted from the closest grid point to the average lidar buoy position. The data were obtained from the public domain and references to the originators/owners are provided under each instrument.
California - Quality-Controlled Reanalysis and Observational Data for Buoy (130), Morro Bay / Derived Data
This collection provides spatiotemporally paired reanalysis and satellite data to supplement the lidar buoy observations during the California deployments. Point time series of observed and reanalysis data are provided, using inverse distance weighting to geolocate the reanalysis data to the buoy location. Gridded time series of reanalysis data are provided, covering the California coast and extending into the Pacific Ocean. Satellite data in the coastal California region are also provided. The reanalysis collection includes the Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications version 2 (MERRA-2), the Climate Forecast System version 2 (CFSv2), the North American Regional Reanalysis (NARR), the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Reanalysis version 5 (ERA5), and the analysis system of the Rapid Refresh (RAP). The satellite data collection is that of Ribal and Young (2019). All datasets are publicly available with the sources provided in the References section.

Radar Wind Profiler at Bodega Bay
These data are collected as part of an observational database developed to support the floating offshore wind energy research under the ORACLE project funded by DOE Wind Energy Technologies Office (WETO). The radar wind profiler network data are collected by NOAA (https://psl.noaa.gov/data/obs/datadisplay), and only data within the state of California are part of the database.
Bayes goes fast: Uncertainty quantification for a covariant energy density functional emulated by the reduced basis method
A covariant energy density functional is calibrated using a principled Bayesian statistical framework informed by experimental binding energies and charge radii of several magic and semi-magic nuclei. The Bayesian sampling required for the calibration is enabled by the emulation of the high-fidelity model through the implementation of a reduced basis method (RBM)—a set of dimensionality reduction techniques that can speed up demanding calculations involving partial differential equations by several orders of magnitude. The RBM emulator we build—using only 100 evaluations of the high-fidelity model—is able to accurately reproduce the model calculations in tens of milliseconds on a personal computer, an increase in speed of nearly a factor of 3,300 when compared to the original solver. Besides the analysis of the posterior distribution of parameters, we present model calculations for masses and radii with properly estimated uncertainties. We also analyze the model correlation between the slope of the symmetry energy L and the neutron skin of 48 Ca and 208 Pb. The straightforward implementation and outstanding performance of the RBM makes it an ideal tool for assisting the nuclear theory community in providing reliable estimates with properly quantified uncertainties of physical observables. Such uncertainty quantification tools will become essential given the expected abundance of data from the recently inaugurated and future experimental and observational facilities.
