Analysis of radiation patterns of interaction tones generated by inlet rods in the JT15D engine

Interaction tones were intentionally generated by circumferential arrays of equally spaced rods that protrude radially from the inlet wall near the face of the 28-blade fan. Arrays of 28 and 41 rods, selected to give specific far field radiation properties, were tested. The expected properties were readily apparent in the measured radiation patterns. A more detailed analysis of the test data showed both the precision and limitations of the applied acoustic theory. Rods protruding 23 percent of the radius predominantly generated only lowest radial order modes, as expected. Measured and predicted radiation patterns were generally in good agreement. The agreement, however, depended on a significant degree of implied refraction due to inlet velocity gradients. Refraction, if present, would impact static-flight noise comparisons.

A relationship between eye movement patterns and performance in a precognitive tracking task

Eye movements made by various subjects in the performance of a precognitive tracking task are studied. The tracking task persented by an antiaircraft artillery (AAA) simulator has an input forcing function represented by a deterministic aircraft fly-by. The performance of subjects is ranked by two metrics. Good, mediocre, and poor trackers are selected for analysis based on performance during the difficult segment of the tracking task and over replications. Using phase planes to characterize both the eye movement patterns and the displayed error signal, a simple metric is developed to study these patterns. Two characterizations of eye movement strategies are defined and quantified. Using these two types of eye strategies, two conclusions are obtained about good, mediocre, and poor trackers. First, the eye tracker who used a fixed strategy will consistently perform better. Secondly, the best fixed strategy is defined as a Crosshair Fixator.

Effects of refraction by means flow velocity gradients on the standing wave pattern in three-dimensional, rectangular waveguides

The influence of a mean vortical flow on the connection between the standing wave pattern in a rectangular three dimensional waveguide and the corresponding duct axial impedance was determined analytically. The solution was derived using a perturbation scheme valid for low mean flow Mach numbers and plane wave sound frequencies. The results show that deviations of the standing wave pattern due to refraction by the mean flow gradients are small.

Spectral feature classification and spatial pattern recognition

This paper introduces a spatial pattern recognition processing concept involving the use of spectral feature classification technology and coherent optical correlation. The concept defines a hybrid image processing system incorporating both digital and optical technology. The hybrid instrument provides simplified pseudopattern images as functions of pixel classification from information embedded within a real-scene image. These pseudoimages become simplified inputs to an optical correlator for use in a subsequent pattern identification decision useful in executing landmark pointing, tracking, or navigating functions. Real-time classification is proposed as a research tool for exploring ways to enhance input signal-to-noise ratio as an aid in improving optical correlation. The approach can be explored with developing technology, including a current NASA Langley Research Center technology plan that involves a series of related Shuttle-borne experiments. A first-planned experiment, Feature Identification and Location Experiment (FILE), is undergoing final ground testing, and is scheduled for flight on the NASA Shuttle (STS2/flight OSTA-1) in 1980. FILE will evaluate a technique for autonomously classifying earth features into the four categories: bare land; water; vegetation; and clouds, snow, or ice.

Satellite pattern classification using charge transfer devices

The potential uses of Charge Transfer Devices (CTDs) in pattern classification operations are explored. The needs for a hardware-based pattern classifier are established, and a matrix multiplication subsystem based upon a sum-of-products CTD is presented. Applications of the subsystem to the classification of multi-modal Gaussian distributions in general and to LANDSAT data processing in particular are discussed. Finally, the potential impact of this technology on satellite data processing methodologies is discussed.

REE patterns versus the origin of the basaltic achondrites

The spectral uniqueness of asteroid 4 Vesta has led to suggestions that it is the eucrite parent body. However, there exist other basaltic achondrite types besides eucrites; either they also came from Vesta or else there exist other achondrite parent bodies. Howardites appear to be mixtures of eucrites and diogenites, and mesosiderites mixtures of eucrites or howardites and iron; thus one may infer that all four classes come from the same parent body. The REE patterns of eucrites and diogenites are modeled in order to test this hypothesis; eucrites can be made easily, but the patterns of diogenites are more difficult to match. The other basaltic achondrites are so rare that one cannot argue from statistics of abundances against a disrupted parent body for their origin. Pallasites and most irons likely had an origin separate from eucrites, again in parent bodies since disrupted.

The Seasat scanning multichannel microwave radiometer /SMMR/: Antenna pattern corrections - Development and implementation

The antenna temperatures measured by the Seasat scanning multichannel microwave radiometer (SMMR) differ from the true brightness temperatures of the observed scene due to antenna pattern effects, principally from antenna sidelobe contributions and cross-polarization coupling. To provide accurate brightness temperatures convenient for geophysical parameter retrievals the antenna temperatures are processed through a series of stages, collectively known as the antenna pattern correction (APC) algorithm. A description of the development and implementation of the APC algorithm is given, along with an error analysis of the resulting brightness temperatures.

Far-Field Antenna Pattern From a Near-Field Test

Plane/polar geometry simplifies measurement of near-field data for this antenna and allows a determination of far-field pattern by Jacobi-Bessel series expansion of data. Measuring probe is an undersized, dielectrically loaded and open-ended waveguide with a far-field pattern similar to that of a small magnetic dipole in its forward directions, making it unnecessary to rotate probe in direction similar to antenna rotation.

The development of a method of producing etch resistant wax patterns on solar cells

A potentially attractive technique for wax masking of solar cells prior to etching processes was studied. This technique made use of a reuseable wax composition which was applied to the solar cell in patterned form by means of a letterpress printing method. After standard wet etching was performed, wax removal by means of hot water was investigated. Application of the letterpress wax printing process to silicon was met with a number of difficulties. The most serious shortcoming of the process was its inability to produce consistently well-defined printed patterns on the hard silicon cell surface.

The effect of solar array voltage patterns on plasma power losses

The use of high-voltage solar arrays in space is discussed in connection with the draining of array power by currents flowing between exposed surfaces through the surrounding plasma. The possibility of reducing the power loss by arranging solar cell strings in repeated small-area modules to eliminate any large areas at high potentials is investigated. It is found that the difference in power loss between modular and linear patterned high-voltage arrays is fairly small. Although the use of modular patterns can reduce the effective mean potential by about 10%, for the type of configuration being considered there is also a 10% increase in sheath area, leading to only a few percent change in total power loss. It is concluded that plasma power loss should not be a primary consideration in designing the physical arrangement of high-voltage arrays.

Oil-flow separation patterns on an ogive forebody

Oil flow patterns on a symmetric tangent ogive forebody having a fineness ratio of 3.5 are presented for angles of attack up to 88 deg at a transitional Reynolds number of 8 million (based on base diameter) and a Mach number of 0.25. Results show typical surface flow separation patterns, the magnitude of surface flow angles, and the extent of laminar and turbulent flow for symmetric, asymmetric, and wakelike flow regimes.

Antenna pattern modification for single reflector antennas

The problem of correcting the antenna temperatures observed with a single reflector is addressed from two viewpoints with emphasis on decreasing the level of the side lobes without greatly amplifying the noise. One viewpoint is that of matrix operations where the elements of the matrix are integrals of the antenna pattern. This formulation is directly applicable to developing algorithms. The other is that of an analysis of the problem by treating the antenna as a spatial filter and using Fourier transforms of the antenna pattern. This approach leads to an understanding of the problem, but is not suitable for performing calculations. The method developed can be used to correct data from mechanically-scanned microwave instruments that view Earth from space.

Evaluation of HCMM satellite data for estuarine tidal circulation patterns and thermal inertia soil moisture measurements

Digital thermal maps of the Cooper River (SC) and the Potomac River estuaries were prepared from heat capacity mapping radiometer (HCMR) tapes. Tidal phases were correctly interpreted and verified. Synoptic surface circulation patterns were charted by location thermal fronts and water mass boundaries within the estuaries. Thermal anomalies were detected adjacent of a conventional power plant on the Potomac. Under optimum conditions, estuaries as small as the Cooper River can be monitored for generalized thermal/tidal circulation patterns by the HCMM-type IR sensors. The HCMM thermal inertia approach to estimating soil moisture at the Luverne (MN) test site was found to be unsatisfactory as a NESS operational satellite technique because of cloud cover interference. Thermal-IR data show similar structure of the Baltimore and Washington heat islands when compared to NOAA AVHRR thermal-IR data. Thermal anomalies from the warm water discharge water of a nuclear power plant were mapped in Lake Anna, Virginia.

Mesoscale damage patterns of Hurricane Frederic in relation to enhanced SMS imagery

An F-scale analysis of Hurricane Frederic (September 12 and 13, 1979) was performed in order to determine the structural damage patterns attributed to the storm. Enhanced SMS imagery revealed patterns of mesoscale features as well as features related to the shielding effects of trees and the grouping effect of structures. The scatter in estimating the damage scale was + or - 1 F-scale. It is shown that discrepancies in recorded wind speed and the estimated wind-speed from the F-scale are the result of different damage mechanisms of hurricane and tornado winds. Radar echoes revealed that the structure of Hurricane Frederic changed from an axisymmetric center to an instantaneous center of rotation. Finally, it is suggested that major hurricane wind and water damage be investigated in greater detail by aerial photography, damage vector mapping, and ground surveys.

Complementary rare earth element patterns in unique achondrites, such as ALHA 77005 and shergottites, and in the earth

Abundances of major, minor, and trace elements are determined in the Antarctic achondrite Allan Hills (ALHA) 77005 via sequential instrumental and radiochemical neutron activation analysis. The rare earth element (REE) abundances of ALHA 77005 reveal a unique chondritic normalized pattern; that is, the REEs are nearly unfractionated from La to Pr at approximately 1.0X chondrites, monotonically increased from Pr to Gd at approximately 3.4X with no Eu anomaly, nearly unfractionated from Gd and Ho and monotonically decreased from Ho to Lu at approximately 2.2X. It is noted that this unique REE pattern of ALHA 77005 can be modeled by a melting process involving a continuous melting and progressive partial removal of melt from a light REE enriched source material. In a model of this type, ALHA 77005 could represent either a crystallized cumulate from such a melt or the residual source material. Calculations show that the parent liquids for the shergottites could also be derived from a light REE enriched source material similar to that for ALHA 77005.
