Aeromonas in South Asia: genomic insights into an environmental pathogen and reservoir of antimicrobial resistance

Aeromonads are an ecologically versatile group of bacteria that cause infections in aquatic animals and are recognised as emerging human pathogens. Despite this, our understanding of Aeromonas diversity, especially the relationship between clinical and environmental strains, remains limited. Here, we present a genomic analysis of the Aeromonas genus, comprising 1853 genomes, and a detailed comparison of clinical and environmental strains from South Asia, including 996 newly sequenced genomes from Bangladesh and India. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that Aeromonas is a highly diverse genus, with no distinct clade separating clinical and environmental isolates. We identified 28 Aeromonas species and 905 novel sequence types, comprising 72.5% of the genomes. Notably, we show a high incidence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes across all isolates, including against front and last-line antibiotics. Finally, we highlight frequent misidentification of Aeromonas as Vibrio cholerae, which is relevant to cholera-endemic regions where both genera co-exist and are associated with diarrhoeal disease. Our study underscores Aeromonas as an important environmental AMR reservoir and emerging multi-species pathogen capable of spilling over into human populations.

Twists and turns: stacking and structure-dependent optical response in MoS 2 nanoscrolls

Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) nanoscrolls (NSs), specifically MoS 2 NSs, present unique structural and optical properties, exhibiting prominent photoluminescence (PL) signals despite their multilayer nature. Here, this study investigates the structural and spectroscopic characteristics of MoS 2 NSs, correlating them to show the effects of reduced interlayer interactions on excitons of MoS 2 NSs. The reduction in interlayer interaction arises from two main factors: (1) symmetry-broken mixed stacking due to misalignment between layers and (2) a highly inhomogeneous strain profile generated by the Archimedean spiral geometry with positive eccentricity. Transmission electron microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and second harmonic generation measurements confirm these findings. Low-temperature PL spectroscopy explores the impact of reduced interlayer interactions on exciton properties such as exciton–phonon coupling and oscillator strength. This study provides crucial insights into the structure, stacking and unique optical properties of TMD NSs, advancing the understanding of interlayer interactions and their impacts in complex quasi-one-dimensional nanostructures.

Spin fluctuations, absence of magnetic order, and crystal electric field studies in the Yb 3+ -based triangular lattice antiferromagnet Rb 3 ⁢Yb⁢(VO 4 ) 2

Here, we report a comprehensive experimental investigation of the structural, thermodynamic, static, and dynamic properties of a triangular lattice antiferromagnet Rb 3 ⁢Yb(VO 4 ) 2 . Through the analysis of magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and specific heat, complemented by crystal electric field (CEF) calculations, we confirm the Kramers' doublet with effective spin 𝐽 eff = 1/2 ground state. Magnetic susceptibility and isothermal magnetization analysis reveal a weak antiferromagnetic interaction among the 𝐽 eff = 1/2 spins, characterized by a small Curie-Weiss temperature (𝜃$^{\textrm{LT}}_{\textrm{CW}}$ ≃−0.26 K) or a reduced exchange coupling (𝐽/𝑘 B ≃ 0.18 K). The 51 V NMR spectra and spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/𝑇 1 ) show no evidence of magnetic long-range-order down to 1.6 K but reflect strong influence of CEF excitations in the intermediate temperatures. At low temperatures, 1/𝑇 1 ⁡(𝑇) shows pronounced frequency dependence and 1/𝑇 1 vs field at different temperatures follows the scaling behavior, highlighting the role of paramagnetic fluctuations. The CEF calculations using the point charge approximation divulge a large energy gap ( ∼18.61 meV) between the lowest and second lowest energy doublets, further establishing Kramers' doublet as the ground state. Our calculations also reproduce the experimental magnetization and specific heat data and indicate an in-plane magnetic anisotropy. These findings position Rb 3⁢ Yb(VO 4 ) 2 as an ideal candidate to explore intrinsic quantum fluctuations and possible quantum spin-liquid physics in a Yb 3+ -based triangular lattice antiferromagnet.

Measurement of medium-induced acoplanarity in central Au-Au and 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV using direct-photon + jet and 𝜋 0 + jet correlations

The STAR Collaboration reports measurements of acoplanarity using semi-inclusive distributions of charged-particle jets recoiling from direct photon and 𝜋 0 triggers, in central Au–Au and 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV. Significant medium-induced acoplanarity broadening is observed for large but not small recoil jet resolution parameter, corresponding to recoil jet yield enhancement up to a factor of ≈ 20 for trigger-recoil azimuthal separation far from 𝜋. This phenomenology is indicative of the response of the quark-gluon plasma to excitation, but not the scattering of jets off of its quasiparticles. As a result, the measurements are not well described by current theoretical models which incorporate jet quenching.

Observation of Charmonium Sequential Suppression in Heavy-Ion Collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider

We report measurements of charmonium sequential suppression in Ru+Ru and Zr+Zr collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ =200 GeV with the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The inclusive yield ratio of 𝜓⁡(2⁢S) to J/𝜓 as a function of transverse momentum is reported, along with the centrality dependence of the double ratio, defined as the 𝜓⁡(2⁢S) to J/𝜓 ratio in heavy-ion collisions relative to that in 𝑝 +𝑝 collisions. In the 0–80% centrality class, the double ratio is found to be 0.41±0.10 (stat)±0.03 (syst)±0.02 (ref), lower than unity with a significance of 5.6 standard deviations. This provides experimental evidence that 𝜓⁡(2⁢S) is significantly more suppressed than J/𝜓 in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC. This sequential suppression pattern seems to increase from peripheral to central collisions, but with no significant dependence on the transverse momentum.

Energy Independence of the Collins Asymmetry in 𝑝 ↑⁢ 𝑝 Collisions

The STAR experiment reports new, high-precision measurements of the transverse single-spin asymmetries for 𝜋 ± within jets, namely the Collins asymmetries, from transversely polarized 𝑝 ↑⁢ 𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 510 GeV. The energy-scaled distribution of jet transverse momentum, 𝑥 T = 2⁢𝑝 T, jet /$\sqrt{s}$, shows a remarkable consistency for Collins asymmetries of 𝜋 ± in jets between $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV and 510 GeV. This indicates that the Collins asymmetries are nearly energy independent, with, at most, a very weak scale dependence in 𝑝 ↑ ⁢𝑝 collisions. These results extend to high-momentum scales (𝑄 2 ≤ 3400 GeV 2 ) and enable unique tests of evolution and universality in the transverse-momentum-dependent formalism, thus providing important constraints for the Collins fragmentation functions.

Evidence of Spin-Interference Effects in Exclusive 𝐽/𝜓 → 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − Photoproduction in Ultraperipheral Heavy-Ion Collisions

Here, we report the first evidence of spin interference in exclusive 𝐽/𝜓 → 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − photoproduction in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions at STAR at $\sqrt{𝑠_{𝑁⁢𝑁}}$ = 200 GeV. In Au + Au collisions, a negative cos⁡(2⁢𝜙) modulation is found for 𝑝 𝑇 < 120 MeV/𝑐 with a significance of 3.2⁢𝜎, while the isobar data (Ru + Ru, Zr + Zr) show a consistent negative modulation with a significance of 1.9⁢𝜎, opposite in sign to that in 𝜌 0 → 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − photoproduction. This establishes for the first time that the interference sign is controlled by the spin structure of the final-state daughters, resolving the ambiguity present in the all-boson 𝜌 0 channel. The compact 𝐽/𝜓 probes gluon distributions at perturbative scales, resulting in a weaker modulation and providing stringent constraints on color glass condensate calculations. These findings demonstrate that spin-dependent interference in heavy vector mesons provides a new, experimentally accessible handle on gluon structure beyond traditional cross-section measurements.

Measurement of fifth- and sixth-order fluctuations of (net-)proton number in Au + Au collisions from phase II of the beam energy scan program at RHIC

We report high-statistics measurements of fifth- and sixth-order factorial cumulants and cumulant ratios of (net-)proton multiplicity distributions in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 7.7–27GeV, using data from the STAR experiment collected during the Beam Energy Scan Phase II at RHIC. Protons and antiprotons are identified at midrapidity (|𝑦| < 0.5) with transverse momentum 0.4 < 𝑝 𝑇 < 2.0GeV/𝑐. The proton factorial cumulants 𝜅 4 , 𝜅 5 , and 𝜅 6 increase with order but exhibit no sign alternation within current uncertainties, offering no evidence for a two-component structure in the proton multiplicity distribution, as might be expected near a first-order phase transition. The cumulant ratios 𝐶 5 /𝐶 1 and 𝐶 6 /𝐶 2 fluctuate around zero in collisions at 0–40% centrality. The results are consistent with both the negative predictions from lattice QCD and the positive trends obtained from the ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics (UrQMD) model. At $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ ≳ 27GeV, the 𝐶 4 /𝐶 2 and 𝐶 5 /𝐶 1 results are compatible with predictions from lattice QCD, functional renormalization group (FRG), and hadron resonance gas (HRG) models, while UrQMD describes the data better at lower energies. Here, these measurements place constraints on baryon number fluctuations and offer valuable insights into the QCD phase structure.

Search for the chiral magnetic effect through beam energy dependence of charge separation using event shape selection

High-energy, heavy-ion collisions can create local domains of chirality-imbalanced quarks, reflecting the topological features of quantum chromodynamics. The chiral magnetic effect (CME) predicts an electric charge separation of quarks in such topological domains along the magnetic field ($\vec{B}$) generated by the passing of two high-Z nuclei. Here, we use a correlation observable Δ⁢𝛾$^{112}$ between charged meson pairs to detect the CME-induced charge separation and a novel event shape selection (ESS) method to mitigate the background effects related to elliptic flow (𝑣 2 ). The ESS method classifies events based on the emission pattern of final-state particles and determines Δ⁢𝛾$^{112}_{ESS}$ from the zero-flow limit. We reconstruct the $\vec{B}$ field direction from the spectator nucleons, which minimizes backgrounds unrelated to the collective motion of the system. In this work, we report the measurements of Δ⁢𝛾$^{112}$ and a background indicator Δ⁢𝛾$^{132}$ in Au+Au collisions from the Brookhaven National Laboratory Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) Beam Energy Scan phase II and at the top RHIC energy. After background suppression, Δ⁢𝛾$^{132}_{ESS}$ aligns with zero, and Δ⁢𝛾$^{112}_{ESS}$ is reduced to no more than 20% of Δ⁢𝛾$^{112}$. We observe a finite residual charge separation with 2.5⁢𝜎, 3⁢𝜎, and 3.2⁢𝜎 significance in the 20–50% centrality range of Au + Au collisions at 11.5, 14.6, and 19.6 GeV. The results at 17.3 and 27 GeV also show positive values but with a lower significance of 1.3⁢𝜎 and 1.1⁢𝜎, respectively. The corresponding Δ⁢𝛾$^{112}_{ESS}$ values at 7.7, 9.2, and 200 GeV are consistent with zero within uncertainties.

Static and dynamic properties of the frustrated spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ depleted-kagome antiferromagnet Cu 7 (TeO 3 ) 2 (SO 4 ) 2 (OH) 6

The structural and magnetic properties of the two-dimensional spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ depleted-kagome compound Cu 7 (TeO 3 ) 2 (SO 4 ) 2 (OH) 6 are investigated using x-ray diffraction, magnetization, heat capacity, and 1 H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) measurements. From the analysis of magnetic susceptibility, we found a large Curie-Weiss temperature [𝜃 CW = −50⁢(2)⁢K] and the coexistence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions. The value of 𝜃 CW gives an estimate of the average nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interaction of 𝐽/𝑘 B ≃ 66K. The NMR relaxation rates (1/𝑇 1 and 1/𝑇 2 ) exhibit a peak, providing evidence for a magnetic long-range order at 𝑇* ≃ 4K which appears to be canted antiferromagnetic type. Heat capacity also features a broad maximum at 𝑇* that moves towards higher temperatures with increasing magnetic field, reflecting defect induced Schottky anomaly. The frustration parameter 𝑓 𝑟 = |𝜃 CW |/𝑇* ≃ 12.5 renders the compound a highly frustrated low-dimensional magnet.

Measurement of transverse polarization of Λ and hyperons inside jets in unpolarized proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV

A surprisingly large transverse polarization of Λ hyperons in unpolarized hadron-nucleon/nucleus collisions has been observed for 50 years, and the origin of this polarization remains an important open question. Recently, theoretical frameworks have advanced in describing this puzzle with the polarizing fragmentation function (PFF). We report the first measurement of Λ and $\overline{Λ}$ transverse polarization inside jets in unpolarized proton-proton collisions, which is directly attributed to the PFF. The polarization is measured as a function of the jet transverse momentum, the fraction of the jet momentum carried by Λ ($\overline{Λ}$) hyperons, and the transverse momentum of Λ ($\overline{Λ}$) hyperons relative to the jet axis. Covering a wide jet-energy range, these data provide the first constraints on the gluon PFF and allow tests of TMD evolution and its universality.

Light dark matter constraints from SuperCDMS HVeV detectors operated underground with an anticoincidence event selection

This article presents constraints on dark-matter-electron interactions obtained from the first underground data-taking campaign with multiple SuperCDMS HVeV detectors operated in the same housing. An exposure of 7.63 g−days is used to set upper limits on the dark-matter-electron scattering cross section for dark matter masses between 0.5 and 1000 MeV/𝑐 2 , as well as upper limits on dark photon kinetic mixing and axionlike particle axioelectric coupling for masses between 1.2 and 23.3 eV/𝑐 2 . Compared to an earlier HVeV search, sensitivity was improved as a result of an increased overburden of 225 meters of water equivalent, an anticoincidence event selection, and better pile-up rejection. In the case of dark-matter-electron scattering via a heavy mediator, an improvement by up to a factor of 25 in cross section sensitivity was achieved.

Search for low-mass electron-recoil dark matter using a single-charge sensitive SuperCDMS-HVeV detector

We present constraints on low-mass dark matter electron scattering and absorption interactions using a SuperCDMS high-voltage eV-resolution (HVeV) detector. Data were taken underground in the NEXUS facility located at Fermilab with an overburden of 225 meters of water equivalent. The experiment benefits from the minimizing of luminescence from the printed circuit boards in the detector holder used in all previous HVeV studies. A blind analysis of 6.1 g · days of exposure produces exclusion limits for dark matter-electron scattering cross sections for masses as low as 1 MeV/𝑐 2 , as well as on the photon-dark photon mixing parameter and the coupling constant between axionlike particles and electrons for particles with masses >1.2 eV/𝑐 2 probed via absorption processes.

Low-energy calibration of SuperCDMS HVeV cryogenic silicon calorimeters using Compton steps

Cryogenic calorimeters for low-mass dark matter searches have achieved sub-eV energy resolutions, driving advances in both low-energy calibration techniques and our understanding of detector physics. The energy deposition spectrum of gamma rays scattering off target materials exhibits step-like features, known as Compton steps, near the binding energies of atomic electrons. Here, we demonstrate a successful use of Compton steps for sub-keV calibration of cryogenic silicon calorimeters, utilizing four SuperCDMS High-Voltage eV-resolution detectors operated with 0 V bias across the crystal. This new calibration at 0 V is compared with the established high-voltage calibration using optical photons. The comparison indicates that the detector response at 0 V is about 30% weaker than expected, highlighting challenges in detector response modeling for low-mass dark matter searches.

Design, development and commissioning of a multi-alkali semiconductor photocathode deposition system for the IUAC Delhi light source photoinjector

A fourth-generation light source, called Delhi Light Source (DLS) based on photocathode-based RF gun has been commissioned at Inter-University Accelerator Centre, New Delhi. Presently, the electron beam is being generated from copper photocathode and the beam is being used for scheduled experiments. Soon, the semiconductor photocathode will be used to produce higher beam current. Here, to develop the semiconductor photocathode, a dedicated photocathode deposition facility was developed in collaboration with Brookhaven national Laboratory (BNL) and has been successfully commissioned and becomes operational at IUAC. This deposition facility is an integrated system with the electron gun and is a unique system as it is capable of producing, preserving (without residual gas poisoning) and in-vacuum transfer of the deposited photocathodes from the deposition chamber up to the RF electron gun. The system is designed to operate under ultra-high vacuum (UHV) and is equipped with load-lock chambers, substrate heating assembly, thickness monitoring via a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), and an in-situ setup for quantum efficiency (QE) measurements. After testing of all the subsystems and a detailed calibration, the first deposition of a cesium telluride (Cs 2 Te) photocathode was successfully performed on a copper (Cu) substrate. This successful commissioning and initial deposition mark a significant step toward the indigenous photocathode development and lays the groundwork for further research into advanced photo emissive materials at IUAC. This paper will discuss the salient features, installation, commissioning, first semiconductor photocathode deposition and its results.
