Long-Length SiC/SiC Tube Irradiation Experiment at LWR Temperatures Inserted into HFIR

This report describes the pre-irradiation characterization and successful assembly of a High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) irradiation experiment designed to assess radiation-induced lateral bowing of silicon carbide fiber–reinforced, silicon carbide matrix composite (SiC/SiC) components under a radial fast neutron flux gradient at representative light-water reactor (LWR) temperatures of approximately 300 °C. The over-arching goal of this work is to validate thermomechanical models of SiC/SiC composite fuel assembly distortion used to predict the extent of lateral bowing and dose at which bowing reaches a maximum value. Ultimately, these models are used to ensure that fuel assembly distortion does not block coolant channels, interfere with control rod/blade movements, and/or impact local reactivity. The experiment contains six cladding tube specimens that are approximately 558.5 mm long with representative pressurized water reactor (PWR) outer and inner diameters of 9.5 mm and 7.5 mm, respectively. The specimens were thoroughly characterized prior to irradiation using traditional dimensional inspection and surface profilometry so that these measurements can later be compared with similar measurements that will be made post-irradiation to determine radiation-induced deformations. Furthermore, fine engraving markers were inscribed along the outer surfaces of the specimen and mapped using analytic photography and a three-dimensional stage. This technique allowed for accurate measurements of the marker spacings, which can be compared with similar measurements that will be made post-irradiation to provide local radiation-induced strain mapping. A light curtain optical micrometer was also employed to measure the pre-irradiation bowing of each specimen. The experiment was successfully assembled and inserted into position VXF-19 for HFIR cycle 516, which began May 12, 2026. The experiment will be removed after cycle 519, which is currently scheduled to end in December 2026.

Clustering and Cliques in Preferential Attachment Random Graphs with Edge Insertion

In this paper, we investigate the global clustering coefficient (a.k.a transitivity) and clique number of graphs generated by a preferential attachment random graph model with an additional feature of allowing edge connections between existing vertices. Specifically, at each time step t, either a new vertex is added with probability f(t), or an edge is added between two existing vertices with probability 1 – f(t). We establish concentration inequalities for the global clustering and clique number of the resulting graphs under the assumption that f(t) is a regularly varying function at infinity with index of regular variation –$\gamma$, where $\gamma$ $\in$ [0, 1). Finally, we also demonstrate an inverse relation between these two statistics: the clique number is essentially the reciprocal of the global clustering coefficient.

Biocatalytic Synthesis of α-Amino Esters via Nitrene C–H Insertion

α-Amino esters are precursors to noncanonical amino acids used in developing small-molecule therapeutics, biologics, and tools in chemical biology. α-C–H amination of abundant and inexpensive carboxylic acid esters through nitrene transfer presents a direct approach to α-amino esters. Methods for nitrene-mediated amination of the protic α-C–H bonds in carboxylic acid esters, however, are underdeveloped. This gap arises because hydrogen atom abstraction (HAA) of protic C–H bonds by electrophilic metal-nitrenoids is slow: metal-nitrenoids preferentially react with polarity-matched, hydridic C–H bonds, even when weaker protic C–H bonds are present. This study describes the discovery and evolution of highly stable protoglobin nitrene transferases that catalyze the enantioselective intermolecular amination of the α-C–H bonds in carboxylic acid esters. We developed a high-throughput assay to evaluate the activity and enantioselectivity of mutant enzymes together with their sequences using the Every Variant Sequencing (evSeq) method. Furthermore, the assay enabled the identification of enantiodivergent enzymes that function at ambient conditions in Escherichia coli whole cells and whose activities can be enhanced by directed evolution for the amination of a range of substrates.

Project FELICIA - A probe to survey the RHIC magnet beampipe diameter for EIC beam screen insertion

The Electron Ion Collider (EIC) Hadron Storage Ring (HSR) will reuse many of the existing superconducting (SC) magnets of the RHIC storage rings. To comply with the beamline vacuum requirements in more demanding operational scenarios, the beampipe of the RHIC SC magnets will be equipped with low surface impedance, low secondary electron yield (SEY) beam screens. The installation of these beam screens will be done with the SC magnets as installed today, thus making it a critical operation for a timely EIC installation. The beam screen inner dimensions must be maximized to retain enough aperture to the beam. On the other hand, keeping enough clearance between the screen and the beampipe is critical to ensure a smooth beam screen installation. A survey probe was designed and built to measure the inner diameter of several RHIC SC magnets in-situ and provide critical data for the beam screen design optimization. This paper reports on the design of the probe and the results from the survey campaign.

Develop High-Throughput Workflows for Whole-Genome Sequencing and Insertion Site Screening (CRADA Final Report)

The engineering of microbes for biomanufacturing (e.g. of fuels, chemicals, materials) applications has advanced to a stage where researchers screen genetic libraries with millions of variations each for those with enhanced productivity. This screening, however, can be slow and expensive, as screening individual variants in a high-throughput yet cost-effective manner is challenging. In this project, we aimed to reduce by 3-fold costs associated with the sequencing aspects of the screening process (to determine which genetic variant is responsible for an observed change in productivity), while being able to process over 1,000 samples per batch.

Machine Tool Metrology in support of carbide insert production

In the context of lab modernization, careful consideration must be given to existing technologies, processes, and knowledge to support the ongoing production, maintenance, and improvement of products for the nuclear enterprise. This consideration often involves analyzing manufacturing processes both to pursue modernization or automation and to ensure the ability to maintain manufacturing capability.
