Rapid Alloy Selection and Additive Manufacturing of Nickel Based Superalloys

In this work the rapid alloy selection and subsequent processability via additive manufacturing of nickelbased superalloys was investigated. Rapid alloy selection protocols developed within the project produced two viable nickel-based superalloys. This phase I CRADA demonstrates a viable route for selecting new nickel-based superalloys for additive manufacturing.

Delta-Doped High Purity Silicon UV-NIR CCDs with High QE and Low Dark Current

Delta doping process was developed on p-channel CCDs for MIDEX-Orion and JDEM/SNAP and was applied to large format (2k x4k) CCDs. Delta doping is applied to fully-fabricated CCDs (complete with Al metallization). High QE and low dark current is demonstrated with delta doped p-channel CCDs. In-house AR coating is demonstrated. Advantages include: Delta doping enables high QE and stability across the entire spectral range attainable with silicon. Delta doping is a low temperature process and is compatible with fully-fabricated detector arrays. Same base device for Orion two channels. High radiation tolerance and no thinning requirements of high purity p-channel. CCDs are additional advantages.

Additive Manufacturing Technologies for Aerospace Applications

An overview will be provided on NASA GRC activities in additive manufacturing (AM) technology development for advanced high performance, propulsion component designs in electric motors and turbine engine systems in future electrified aircraft. AM offers significant benefits over conventional manufacturing to fabricate components that are more compact, lighter weight, geometrically complex, innovatively cooled, integrated, multi-material, and multifunctional. For turbine engine applications, silicon carbide (SiC) based composites are being pursued using binder jetting. For electric motor applications, additive processes are being applied toward optimized component designs to include the housing, rotor, and stators with 3-D printing and wire imbedded coils and with direct printed 3-phase coils. The will be an emphasis on capabilities in additive manufacturing.

Water purification system

A method and system for water purification includes a particle accelerator configured to generate a particle beam and a conduit configured to be substantially in line with the particle beam wherein said electron beam is incident on a fluid flowing through the conduit. The electron beam can be oriented to be substantially head on to the direction of flow of the fluid in the conduit. A shielding assembly can be configured around the conduit. A cartridge filtering system and contaminant filtering system can be provided to remove additional contaminants.

Microstructure and diffusion behavior of uranium fuel with minor additives

Fission product lanthanides in metallic fuels are known to cause adverse fuel-cladding chemical interaction (FCCI). Tin (Sn) and palladium (Pd) are being explored as the potential additives to reduce or mitigate lanthanide-induced FCCI by forming stable Sn-Ln and Pd-Ln compounds. The current study is an investigation of the fuel alloys, U–4Sn, U–4Sn-4Ln, U–4Pd, and U–4Pd-4Ln (wt. %), and their diffusion behaviors with Fe. Microstructural analysis was performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Further, the binary phases in the UPd and USn alloys are identified as UPd 3 and suspected U 2 Sn, where U 2 Sn is unknown in the literature. The binary phases in the UPdLn alloy are identified as PdLn and Pd-rich Pd-Ln (Pd 4 Ln 3 and Pd 3 Ln 2 ), and in the USnLn alloy is SnLn. Diffusion of Fe with these binary phases is insignificant compared to the diffusion with U. The Ln-induced FCCI can be mitigated by the additives.

Hybrid metal additive/subtractive machine tools and applications

Additive manufacturing creates parts by depositing a preform, typically layer by layer. Subtractive manufacturing involves removing material from a preform to create parts. Hybrid machine tools combine both additive and subtractive processes in the same workspace. They can be used to create parts that meet functional tolerance and surface finish requirements, or to create features that are difficult to produce using additive or subtractive processes alone. Here, this paper describes hybrid metal additive/subtractive machine tools. It covers design considerations, sensors and controls, process management, programming and software, and the impact on the design space. It also identifies future research challenges.

Lifelike metallic structures using origami and compliant mechanisms

In nature, materials and designs are smart i.e., they achieve the desired shape or size to optimize different processes without needing external devices. However, in the design of mechanical metallic structures, gaining such behavior without using special materials or external sources is still a visionary thought. Here the concept of lifelike metallic structures is introduced. Further, the vision is to produce designs where the metallic walls can behave like human muscles. To create such structures, origami-inspired designs in combination with compliant mechanisms are proposed. For fabricating such designs with desired mechanical properties, it is also proposed to leverage additive manufacturing techniques.

FORTE Measurements of Global Optical Lightning Waveforms and Implications for Optical Lightning Detection

Lightning processes generate a diverse collection of optical pulses from current traversing the lightning channels. These signals are then broadened spatially and temporally via scattering in the clouds. The resulting waveforms measured from space with instruments like the photodiode detector (PDD) on the Fast On-orbit Recording of Transient Events (FORTE) satellite have a variety of shapes. In this study, we use coincident optical and Radio-Frequency measurements to document the properties of optical PDD waveforms associated with different types of lightning, estimate delays from scattering in the clouds, and comment on how pulse shape impacts optical lightning detection. We find that the attributes of optical pulses recorded by the PDD are consistent with prior studies, but vary globally and with event amplitude. The most powerful lightning tends to be single-peaked with faster rise times (median: ~100 µs) and shorter effective widths (median: ~400 µs) than normal lightning. Particularly dim events, meanwhile, include cases of broad optical waveforms with sustained optical emission throughout the PDD record, which the pixelated FORTE Lightning Location System (LLS) instrument has difficulty detecting. We propose that this is due to the optical signal being divided between individual LLS pixels that are each, individually, not bright enough to trigger. We use PDD waveforms and Monte Carlo radiative transfer modeling to demonstrate that increasing the temporal and spatial resolution of a pixelated lightning imager will make it more difficult to detect these broad/dim pulses as their energy becomes divided between additional pixels/integration frames.
