Rolling-Bearing Service Life Based on Probable Cause for Removal: A Tutorial

In 1947 and 1952, Gustaf Lundberg and Arvid Palmgren developed what is now referred to as the Lundberg-Palmgren Model for Rolling Bearing Life Prediction based on classical rolling-element fatigue. Today, bearing fatigue probably accounts for less than 5 percent of bearings removed from service for cause. A bearing service life prediction methodology and tutorial indexed to eight probable causes for bearing removal, including fatigue, are presented, which incorporate strict series reliability; Weibull statistical analysis; available published field data from the Naval Air Rework Facility; and 224,000 rolling-element bearings removed for rework from commercial aircraft engines.

QAOA Tutorial Outline

In this tutorial we discuss the quantum alternating operator ansatz (QAOA), which is a variational algorithm that can be used for approximate optimization of combinatorial problems with soft and hard constraints.We go through the design of the quantum circuit and its actual implementation in real hardware, discussing compilation issues such as gate synthesis and scheduling of all the required gates and qubit-swapping overhead.

Approximate Entropy and Sample Entropy: A Comprehensive Tutorial

Approximate Entropy and Sample Entropy are two algorithms for determining the regularity of series of data based on the existence of patterns. Despite their similarities, the theoretical ideas behind those techniques are different but usually ignored. This paper aims to be a complete guideline of the theory and application of the algorithms, intended to explain their characteristics in detail to researchers from different fields. While initially developed for physiological applications, both algorithms have been used in other fields such as medicine, telecommunications, economics or Earth sciences. In this paper, we explain the theoretical aspects involving Information Theory and Chaos Theory, provide simple source codes for their computation, and illustrate the techniques with a step by step example of how to use the algorithms properly. This paper is not intended to be an exhaustive review of all previous applications of the algorithms but rather a comprehensive tutorial where no previous knowledge isrequired to understand the methodology.

CNES Large Scale SWOT Simulator: User's Tutorial for Terrestrial Surface Water Applications

The CNES Large Scale SWOT Hydrology Simulator creates proxy SWOT water surface elevations (WSE). A large portion of the effort required to run the CNES simulator is upfront in creating the simulator input. This tutorial describes the steps to create the simulator input and then run the CNES simulator. Since many applications will utilize a time series of proxy SWOT WSE, a short description of that process is included in the Appendix for advanced users.

SeaDAS Tutorial: Applying Color Ramps to ACOLITE Turbidity Products

This tutorial provides step-by-step instructions for applying color ramps and legends to ACOLITE turbidity products derived from the Dogliotti turbidity equation. The user inputs their own image and the resulting product is a colorized visualization of turbidity. This visualization provides the user with a better understanding of turbidity in their image and can be used to support further analysis of turbidity patterns.

CoCoSim Tutorial: Contract-based Compositional Verification of Simulink Models

This tutorial presents CoCoSim, a verification framework for MATLAB Simulink and Stateflow models. We demonstrate CoCoSim’s architecture, designed to be compatible with Lustre-based verification tools, as well as easily extensible to other candidate backends. We focus on CoCoSim’s powerful compositional verification scheme, which allows for scalable verification through the usage of abstractions of subsystems, express ed in the form of Assume-Guarantee Contracts. We show CoCoSim’s interconnection with NASA’s Formal Requirements Tool (FRET), that enables a seamless transition between authoring and formally verifying requirements for Simulink/Stateflow models. Finally, we discuss work in progress with regards to test case generation options in CoCoSim, demonstrating the generation of MC/DC tests for Simulink artifacts.

fmdtools Tutorial: Intro to Resilience Modelling, Simulation, and Visualization in Python With fmdtools

This workshop will cover the basics of using the fmdtools package for the simulation of hazardous scenarios for resilience simulation. The fmdtools simulation package is an open-source python toolkit for simulating the dynamic response of a system to internal and externally-driven hazardous scenarios, including faults and environmental conditions, that can be used to analyze the risks related to these hazards. Prior to the development of fmdtools, researchers had to either adapt an (often limited) propriety toolkit or develop their own design/simulation/analysis codes to develop their models of hazardous events, a significant technical burden to both (1) leveraging resilience modeling methodologies and (2) extending these methodologies with their own contributions. The fmdtools package provides a number of model constructs and simulation and analysis methods to enable the designer to focus to solely on their modeling case-study while still enabling a significant degree of model expressiveness and adaptability via Python-based model definition. This tutorial will present the setup of fmdtools and a high-level overview of its use, as well as some simple examples for understanding how to leverage its modelling, simulation, and analysis capabilities. Familiarity with jupyter notebook and basic python will be assumed.

Tutorial: Models and Tools at the CCMC for Space Weather Research and Education

Community Coordinated Modeling Center (CCMC) is hosting an expanding collection of space weather models covering the entire domain from the solar corona to the Earth’s lower atmosphere. The tutorial will present examples of CCMC models utilization in different research projects and demonstrate how CCMC tools and systems can be utilized in research and education. The presentation will also include highlights of International Space Weather Action Teams Initiatives and discuss opportunities for early career scientists. The presentation will be followed by hands-on demo of CCMC tools and systems.

Tutorial: Electrified Aircraft Propulsion Approaches for Modeling and Electrical Hardware-in-the-Loop Testing

This tutorial session outlines capabilities made available by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for testing electrified aircraft propulsion (EAP) hardware and software prior to using turbomachinery. Removing these components from the experimentation process until necessary significantly reduces the development and testing costs and safety risks. Three facilities, the NASA Electric Aircraft Testbed (NEAT) and the Hybrid Propulsion Emulation Rig (HyPER) are unique facilities that provide the following capabilities: (i) the verification of megawatt-scale electrical and electromechanical system components at altitude, (ii) the verification of EAP control systems on sub-scale representative electromechanical architectures. The importance, operation, and specifications of each facility is described with detail. Provided examples of past testing showcase the abilities of each facility. Simple and complex methods for replicating the steady state and dynamical mechanical loading on the electrical power system are discussed

Systems Engineering Tutorial with Case Studies

Due to the ever-growing number of complex technical problems facing our world, a Systems Engineering approach is needed to assist in successful design, build and implementation of solutions. The interdisciplinary technical structure of current systems, technical processes representing System Design, Technical Management and Product Realization are instrumental in the development and integration of new technologies into mainstream applications. This tutorial will demonstrate the application of Systems Engineering tools to these types of problems. Learning objectives include, understanding how to develop and engineer a conceptual system; understand the importance of teams, communication, requirements definition, interface control, and focus on deliverables; useful tools and techniques for each aspect of the System Engineering process including Model Based Systems Engineering which will be touched upon lightly. Some hands-on problems will be pursued especially in requirements development which is always key to a successful project. Case studies will be presented to assist in the learning process.

Runtime Verification of Hard Realtime Systems With Copilot: A Tutorial

This presentation is a tutorial on RV using Copilot, a runtime verification framework for real-time embedded systems. Copilot monitors are written in a compositional, stream-based language with support for a variety of Temporal Logics (TL), which results in robust, high-level specifications that are easier to understand than their traditional counterparts. The framework translates monitor specifications into C code with static memory requirements, which can be compiled to run on embedded hardware.

A Tutorial for Using the CGT Script Library to Generate and Assemble Overset Meshes

The purpose of this document is to introduce a new user to the procedures for overset CFD analysis by building scripts based on the CGT Script Library. Parameterized inputs are built into the steps of the process which include creation and manipulation of geometry, and surface and volume meshing. In preparation for performing computations in the flow solver, further steps are constructed for specification of inputs for domain connectivity, flow solver boundary conditions, and components for computation of aerodynamic forces/moments. The JCLV rocket will be used as an example geometry for this demonstration.
