A Heuristic Criterion for Instability to Fragmentation in Rotating, Interstellar Clouds

A heuristic criterion, based on linear perturbation analysis, is applied to the initial growth of density perturbations in isothermal or adiabatic gas clouds, with initially uniform density and uniform rotation. The heuristic criterion is shown to be consistent with the available results from numerical calculations of cloud collapse. The criterion predicts that perturbations varying as cos (m(phi)) will be most likely to grow when )pi is small, unless the cloud is nearly pressureless.

Automatic Overset Grid Generation with Heuristic Feedback Control

An advancing front grid generation system for structured Overset grids is presented which automatically modifies Overset structured surface grids and control lines until user-specified grid qualities are achieved. The system is demonstrated on two examples: the first refines a space shuttle fuselage control line until global truncation error is achieved; the second advances, from control lines, the space shuttle orbiter fuselage top and fuselage side surface grids until proper overlap is achieved. Surface grids are generated in minutes for complex geometries. The system is implemented as a heuristic feedback control (HFC) expert system which iteratively modifies the input specifications for Overset control line and surface grids. It is developed as an extension of modern control theory, production rules systems and subsumption architectures. The methodology provides benefits over the full knowledge lifecycle of an expert system for knowledge acquisition, knowledge representation, and knowledge execution. The vector/matrix framework of modern control theory systematically acquires and represents expert system knowledge. Missing matrix elements imply missing expert knowledge. The execution of the expert system knowledge is performed through symbolic execution of the matrix algebra equations of modern control theory. The dot product operation of matrix algebra is generalized for heuristic symbolic terms. Constant time execution is guaranteed.

Task Assignment Heuristics for Parallel and Distributed CFD Applications

This paper proposes a task graph (TG) model to represent a single discrete step of multi-block overset grid computational fluid dynamics (CFD) applications. The TG model is then used to not only balance the computational workload across the overset grids but also to reduce inter-grid communication costs. We have developed a set of task assignment heuristics based on the constraints inherent in this class of CFD problems. Two basic assignments, the smallest task first (STF) and the largest task first (LTF), are first presented. They are then systematically costs. To predict the performance of the proposed task assignment heuristics, extensive performance evaluations are conducted on a synthetic TG with tasks defined in terms of the number of grid points in predetermined overlapping grids. A TG derived from a realistic problem with eight million grid points is also used as a test case.

A Reinforcement Learning Hyper-Heuristic in Multi-Objective Optimization with Application to Structural Damage Identification

Multi-objective optimization allows satisfying multiple decision criteria concurrently, and generally yields multiple solutions. It has the potential to be applied to structural damage identification applications which are oftentimes under-determined. How to achieve high-quality solutions in terms of accuracy, diversity, and completeness is a challenging research subject. The solution techniques and parametric selections are believed to be problem specific. In this research, we formulate a reinforcement learning hyper-heuristic scheme to work coherently with the single-point search algorithm MOSA/R (Multi-Objective Simulated Annealing Algorithm based on Re-seed). The four low-level heuristics proposed can meet various optimization requirements adaptively and autonomously using the domination amount, crowding distance, and hypervolume calculations. The new approach exhibits improved and more robust performance than AMOSA, NSGA-II, and MOEA/D when applied to benchmark test cases. It is then applied to an active damage interrogation scheme for structural damage identification where solution diversity/completeness and accuracy are critically important. Results show that this approach can successfully include the true damage scenario in the solution set identified. The outcome of this research can potentially be extended to a variety of applications.

Mixed Integer Programming and Heuristic Scheduling for Space Communication Networks

We developed framework and the mathematical formulation for optimizing communication network using mixed integer programming. The design yields a system that is much smaller, in search space size, when compared to the earlier approach. Our constrained network optimization takes into account the dynamics of link performance within the network along with mission and operation requirements. A unique penalty function is introduced to transform the mixed integer programming into the more manageable problem of searching in a continuous space. The constrained optimization problem was proposed to solve in two stages: first using the heuristic Particle Swarming Optimization algorithm to get a good initial starting point, and then feeding the result into the Sequential Quadratic Programming algorithm to achieve the final optimal schedule. We demonstrate the above planning and scheduling methodology with a scenario of 20 spacecraft and 3 ground stations of a Deep Space Network site. Our approach and framework have been simple and flexible so that problems with larger number of constraints and network can be easily adapted and solved.

Mixed Integer Programming and Heuristic Scheduling for Space Communication Networks

In this paper, we propose to solve the constrained optimization problem in two phases. The first phase uses heuristic methods such as the ant colony method, particle swarming optimization, and genetic algorithm to seek a near optimal solution among a list of feasible initial populations. The final optimal solution can be found by using the solution of the first phase as the initial condition to the SQP algorithm. We demonstrate the above problem formulation and optimization schemes with a large-scale network that includes the DSN ground stations and a number of spacecraft of deep space missions.

A Heuristic Approach to Global Landslide Susceptibility Mapping

Landslides can have significant and pervasive impacts to life and property around the world. Several attempts have been made to predict the geographic distribution of landslide activity at continental and global scales. These efforts shared common traits such as resolution, modeling approach, and explanatory variables. The lessons learned from prior research have been applied to build a new global susceptibility map from existing and previously unavailable data. Data on slope, faults, geology, forest loss, and road networks were combined using a heuristic fuzzy approach. The map was evaluated with a Global Landslide Catalog developed at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, as well as several local landslide inventories. Comparisons to similar susceptibility maps suggest that the subjective methods commonly used at this scale are, for the most part, reproducible. However, comparisons of landslide susceptibility across spatial scales must take into account the susceptibility of the local subset relative to the larger study area. The new global landslide susceptibility map is intended for use in disaster planning, situational awareness, and for incorporation into global decision support systems.

Collection and Analysis of Telemetry for CyOTE Heuristics (CATCH)

The Collection and Analysis of Telemetry for CyOTE Heuristics (CATCH) provides a framework for augmenting an organization’s existing security controls with CyOTE developed analyses. CATCH collects, stores, analyzes, and creates STIX reports on anomalous data. CATCH connects the CyOTE analysis framework together with the MITRE ICS ATT&CK® patterns and highlights areas of improvement and further research. This tool is designed to enhance an organization’s security controls by providing a structured approach to collecting, storing, analyzing, and reporting anomalous data.

Heuristic Sonification Methods for Electromagnetic Signals Report

Sonification algorithms convert information to audible representations. The 2025 Seed Money project “Exploring Electromagnetic Signals through Sonification” seeks to create machine-learning based methods to convert electromagnetic signals to sound for human interpretation. However, as a precursor to ML-based methods, some heuristic methods have been investigated in preparation for the seed project. This report covers some example methods, applied to the “Flaming Moes” dataset of unintended radiative emissions (URE), with some simple metrics to study the device discrimination properties of the sonification as well as the “pleasantness” of the methods.
