FINAL PROJECT REPORT SBIR Phase II Next Generation Power Converters for Distributed Wind Applications

Intergrid, LLC, based in Temple, New Hampshire, conducted an 24-month DOE SBIR Phase II research program to develop next-generation electronic power inverters and converters for the United States distributed wind (DW) market. The distributed wind segment is defined as turbines rated from 10 kW to 1 MW, a market segment that has been almost entirely blocked by the absence of UL1741-certified, commercially available inverters.

Maximizing Wave Energy Converter Power Extraction by Utilizing a Variable Negative Stiffness Magnetic Spring

Complex conjugate impedance matching is a key concept for wave energy converter design. Matching the impedance of the power take-off (PTO) system to the complex conjugate of the wave energy converter's (WEC) impedance ensures efficient transfer of energy from the WEC body motion to electrical power. In low frequency waves, impedance matching often requires a negative PTO stiffness. In this paper, an adjustable stiffness magnetic torsion spring will be presented and modeled to understand its potential to improve WEC performance. The spring has the ability to provide a negative stiffness, allowing the PTO impedance to more closely match the complex conjugate of the WEC impedance at low frequencies. The spring also supports an adjustable stiffness value, meaning it can be tuned according to the incoming wave conditions. The spring's tunability may put less stress on the rest of the PTO system in wave conditions outside its normal operation zone without sacrificing electrical power output. The adjustable magnetic spring's effects are modeled and explored in this paper by examining the resultant average annual electrical power and capacity factor. The study suggests that the tunable magnetic spring has the potential to significantly improve capacity factor while maintaining a high average electrical power.

Wave Energy Converter Power Take-Off Modeling and Validation From Experimental Bench Tests

This article describes the implementation of a new numerical model of the power take-off system installed in the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute wave energy converter, a device developed to provide power to various oceanic research missions. The simultaneous presence of hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical subsystems in the power take-off system represents a significant challenge in forging an accurate model able to replicate the main dynamic characteristics of the system. The validation of the new numerical model is addressed by comparing simulations with the measurements obtained during a series of bench tests. Data from the bench tests show good agreement with the numerical model. The validated model provides deeper insights into the complex nonlinear dynamics of the power take-off system and will support further performance improvements in the future.

Niowave Power Converter Modeling and Testing

Niowave has designed, built and is now using in-beam a low power (up to 10 kW) lead bismuth eutectic (LBE) converter. In this concept, an electron beam is passed through a falling layer of LBE, converting the electron to neutrons which then pass into a vessel which is functionally a subcritical reactor configuration. A detailed report has been written by Niowave, entitled “LBE Neutron Converter Manual.” The LANL contribution has been modeling, followed by a flow visualization model made in quartz. The LANL contribution is reported herein.

Economic Comparison Between a Battery and Supercapacitor for Hourly Dispatching Wave Energy Converter Power: Preprint

This paper demonstrates a successful dispatching scheme of slider-crank wave energy converter (WEC) production using two different kinds of energy storage systems, namely, (i) Li-ion battery and (ii) Supercapacitors (SC). The performance of two energy storage systems has been compared in order to develop the most economical energy storage system for WEC hourly dispatching scheme. The cost optimization of the energy storage system considering both cycling and calendar aging expenses is made based on its usage of depth of discharge (DOD). In this study, the extensive simulation is conducted in MATLAB/Simulink platform, and it is found that SC is a better candidate than Li-ion battery in terms of economic assessment for hourly dispatching WEC power.

A Medium Voltage Three-Stage Power Converter Topology for Distribution Grid Scale Energy Storage Systems

This work proposes a three-stage converter topology with a medium frequency isolation transformer for direct integration of energy storage systems into medium voltage distribution grids. The distributed architecture of the topology, using standard AC/DC converters, has been developed with the aim of plug-and-play capability and voltage and power scalability. The medium frequency transformer facilitates improved power density, while its 20:1 voltage translation capability enables the use of limited voltage level (500 Vdc) of the commercially available batteries. This paper presents the topology structure and details how it can be scaled to reach the full range of the distribution grid voltages and the required power levels. A transformer design for 500 Hz rated frequency is discussed. The control scheme of the converter equipped with voltage support, frequency support, and black start capabilities is also presented. Control hardware-in-the-loop results using OPAL-RT, with converter switching models connected to a weak IEEE-4 node test feeder modified for the aforementioned grid services, are provided to show the topology feasibility.

Quantifying Dynamic On-State Resistance of GaN HEMTs for Power Converter Design via a Survey of Low and High Voltage Devices

Designing and optimizing high switching frequency, ultra-efficient converters requires detailed knowledge of the behavior and parasitic parameters for both active and passive components. Recently, wide bandgap transistors have enabled simultaneous increases in both switching frequency and efficiency due to higher maximum operating junction temperature limits, lower dc on-state resistances, and reduced parasitic inductances and capacitances. Yet, the early acceptance of gallium-nitride (GaN) switches was plagued by detrimental dynamic on-state resistance effects. This complex phenomenon for GaN devices is characterized by deviations in on-state resistance from dc operating characteristics based on design choices such as the magnitude and duration of both voltage and current stress, switching mode, and junction temperature. While device manufacturers have made improvements compared to early generation devices, experimental evidence from a survey of commercial GaN transistors highlight measurable change in on-state resistance still exists due to variations in voltage stress during hard-switching operation. After sharing insights for obtaining low noise measurements, an analysis method along with two metrics are proposed to characterize dynamic on-state resistance measurements for power electronics designers. Furthermore, quantifying the performance of GaN devices with standardized metrics facilitates a fair comparison between different GaN device technologies during converter development, enables manufacturing qualification for GaN switches, and provides a benchmark to catalyze improvement for the next generation of GaN device development.

Multiagent-Based Dynamic Voltage Support of Power Converters During Fault Ride-Through

Reference point of applicability (RPA) is a predefined point in a distribution network that performance requirements shall apply. As RPA is not directly controlled by a dedicated distributed energy resource (DER), it requires an aggregate response of multiple DERs over a complex meshed network. Here, this article presents a multiagent-based distributed dynamic voltage support (DDVS) method for coordinated aggregate response of multiple DER units to support RPA voltage profile during and after fault ride-through. DDVS implements a multiagent-based leader target tracking scheme with velocity matching and flock centering features to avoid uncoordinated current injections of cooperative DERs. The DDVS is an event-based approach based on RPA requirements. Two-dimensional voltage support objective is handled: 1) coordinated positive sequence current injection for voltage magnitude boosting and 2) coordinated negative sequence current injection for unbalance voltage mitigation. The results demonstrate that the proposed DDVS algorithm addresses emerging coordinated DVS requirement of DERs.

Niowave Flow Testing of the High Power Converter - FY 21

Design work for a 100 kW converter to produce a neutron flux via electron impact on a flowing stream of liquid metal lead-bismuth (LBE) was conducted in FY20. In FY21, the focus shifted to a 20 kW converter which was designed in collaboration with Niowave engineers. A flow visualization model is needed to validate model results for the 20 kW converter and ensure adequate coolant flow over containment structures. This work highlights the mockup that was made with quartz side plates by LANL.
