A quick introduction to linear transport phenomena

The goal of this report is to provide an introductory-level overview of the linear Boltzmann equation in the context of neutron transport. After deriving the transport equation, we discuss some of its basic applications in reactor theory. Finally, we review several simplifying approximations of the linearized Boltzmann equation that are essential to solving it in many applications. Although the context of neutron transport is called upon to add concreteness to our discussion, many of the concepts and approximations that we discuss remain relevant in other many other phenomena.

Earth Filter Mathematica Toolbox V4 User’s Guide: Simplifying, Visualizing and Quick Modeling of All Fission Products from 60 Nuclear Sources

The Earth Filter Mathematica toolbox is a set of user-friendly routines that accurately calculate the ingrowth and decay of any of the 908 fission products for an infinite combination of sources over a large dynamic range and large time scales. This toolbox was developed by Dr. W. P. Brug at Los Alamos National Laboratory and eliminates the need for the user to define and solve differential equations by automatically scanning the ENDF-349 dataset and creating a complete set of differential equations (including delayed neutron branches to both the ground and metastable states) for every fission product. Additionally, this code allows the user to choose the data source for half-lives from several key references (i.e., TORI, IAEA, ENDF or NUDAT.) The complete set of ENDF-349 independent and cumulative fission yields for all 60 isotopic targets and 4 different neutron spectrums are included. This allows nearly any nuclear fission source to be accurately modeled as a linear combination of endpoint sources. The Earth Filter Toolbox has no limit as to the length of split list, and split lists of 5 or more endpoint sources can be quite common.

Quick Testing of Skipper-CCD Packages

The experiment OSCURA whose main purpose will be to search for dark matter particles with masses a few orders of magnitude below the mass of the proton will require mass production of MCMs. Therefore, a fast and efficient test will be needed. Current tests involve using electromechanical switches that can take up to 30 minutes to test a single MCM. My work aims to perform the tests almost instantaneously. In doing so, CCDs will be tested as the MCMs are being built in order to detect faulty units early on in the production process.

Implications of new Reasoning Capabilities for Science and Security: Results from a Quick Initial Study

On Thursday, September 12 OpenAI released “a new series of models designed to spend more time thinking… they can reason through complex tasks and solve harder problems than previous models in science, coding, and math.” These models are referred to as o1-preview and o1-mini and appear to be first results of what had been a closely held project called Strawberry within OpenAI. The models are not described as successors in the earlier GPT series because they provide a qualitatively different type of capability, especially step-by-step reasoning.

Energy Emergency and Preparedness Data: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and Quick Guidance on Crisis Communications

State Energy Offices and Public Utility Commissions rely on timely, accurate, and actionable information to perform their energy emergency response duties and execute their roles as state energy security planners. In support of this need, the National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO) and the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissions (NARUC) hosted an Energy Security and Data Analysis Workshop in Washington, DC to identify energy security response and planning data sources; and to share successful methods of data use and integration in state, federal, and private sector tools. Following the workshop, NASEO and NARUC hosted two topical data-centric webinars based on state priorities to identify best practices in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Crisis Communications programs leveraged in energy assurance planning and response. The Crisis Communications webinar covered best practice tactics for how states can respond during energy emergencies and other crises. Based on the workshop and webinars, this document summarizes commonly used data sources and includes frequently asked questions which may be used by state energy officials (i.e., consisting of staff from Public Utility Commissions and Governor-designated State Energy Offices) to help guide them in developing or improving their Crisis Communications capabilities. A strong public information program is a key crisis management tool. Timely and accurate information helps prevent confusion and uncertainty and encourages public support and cooperation. As energy subject matter experts, state energy officials are vital in the distilling, clarifying, and conveying energy sector information and implications to decision-makers and the public. Other participants in an effective public information program include the Governor’s Office, other state agencies, local governments, energy providers, local businesses, state legislature, and the federal government. It is essential to provide stakeholders and the public with information about the nature, severity, and duration of an emergency because inadequate understanding and awareness can lead to undesirable actions that could further exacerbate the situation. Before a state government can provide information to the public, it must gather information, describe the emergency accurately, and develop recommendations to manage the situation.

Rapid Detection and Quick Characterization of African Swine Fever Virus Using the VolTRAX Automated Library Preparation Platform

African swine fever virus (ASFV) is the causative agent of a severe and highly contagious viral disease affecting domestic and wild swine. The current ASFV pandemic strain has a high mortality rate, severely impacting pig production and, for countries suffering outbreaks, preventing the export of their pig products for international trade. Early detection and diagnosis of ASFV is necessary to control new outbreaks before the disease spreads rapidly. One of the rate-limiting steps to identify ASFV by next-generation sequencing platforms is library preparation. Here, we investigated the capability of the Oxford Nanopore Technologies’ VolTRAX platform for automated DNA library preparation with downstream sequencing on Nanopore sequencing platforms as a proof-of-concept study to rapidly identify the strain of ASFV. Within minutes, DNA libraries prepared using VolTRAX generated near-full genome sequences of ASFV. Thus, our data highlight the use of the VolTRAX as a platform for automated library preparation, coupled with sequencing on the MinION Mk1C for field sequencing or GridION within a laboratory setting. These results suggest a proof-of-concept study that VolTRAX is an effective tool for library preparation that can be used for the rapid and real-time detection of ASFV.

Inputs and Outputs for paper "The DESC stellarator code suite. Part 1. Quick and accurate equilibria computations"

Contains the DESC and VMEC input and output files used in the paper, as well as the plotting scripts used to create the figures in the paper (Current with the arXiv Mar 31 2022 version, https://arxiv.org/abs/2203.17173v1): 3D equilibrium codes are vital for stellarator design and operation, and high-accuracy equilibria are also necessary for stability studies. This paper details comparisons of two 3D equilibrium codes, VMEC, which uses a steepest-descent algorithm to reach a minimum-energy plasma state, and DESC, which minimizes the MHD force error in real space directly. Accuracy as measured by final plasma energy and satisfaction of MHD force balance, as well as other metrics, will be presented for each code, along with the computation time. It is shown that DESC is able to achieve more accurate solutions, especially near-axis. DESC's global Fourier-Zernike basis also yields the solution everywhere in the plasma volume, not just on discrete flux surfaces. Further, DESC can compute the same accuracy solution as VMEC in an order of magnitude less time.

Cyber-Informed Engineering: Standards Development Organization Quick Start Guide

Cyber-Informed Engineering (CIE) is an emerging methodology focused on identifying and reducing high-consequence events that may affect physical critical infrastructure systems as a result of their dependence on digital technology. CIE, developed by National Laboratories and promoted by the Department of Energy (DOE), incorporates consequence-focused planning into the design and engineering process from the earliest stages of a project. This guide provides a concise overview of CIE and offers practical insight into how Standards Development Organizations (SDOs) can interpret CIE principles and apply those concepts in updates to various standards. It is important to remember that CIE extends beyond a compliance checklist, emphasizing a broader, interpretive approach. Instead, it encourages an interpretive mindset - a "turning of 'what if' to 'even if'" approach that anticipates and engineers out high-consequence events. The authors encourage SDOs to establish and promote CIE principles as enhancements for more resilient-by-design outcomes across critical infrastructure energy sectors. The 12 core principles of CIE outline specific behaviors and actions that SDOs and engineers may adopt to enhance system resilience. This guide applies these principles in a manner intended to be relevant across various technologies and threat landscapes. We welcome institutions and vendors to identify new or different framework alignments and mappings as we collectively work towards a safer and more reliable digital landscape.

Healthy Buildings Guide for Small Businesses: A Quick Reference to Improve Indoor Air Quality (Restaurants Excluded)

Indoor air pollutant concentrations can be higher than those outdoors, putting occupants at risk. These pollutants come from a variety of sources: materials used to build and furnish indoor spaces, retail products and services, and occupants themselves. Ventilation, temperature, and humidity also affect indoor air quality. It is important to consider the documented benefits of healthy indoor environments at any time – not just during a public health crisis – and it is key to consider the indoor air quality where we do business as well as at home. Small businesses vary in size, services, products, ownership style, and building mechanical systems, yet all benefit from healthy indoor spaces for employees and customers. This guide provides steps, in conjunction with public health guidance, that small businesses can take to improve and maintain indoor air quality. Small businesses often have unique ownership structures – the building owner and business owner can be different parties – so this guide addresses both building and business owner action items. There are many ways to pursue healthy indoor air, including eliminating, minimizing, and/or controlling the contaminants we bring in, and removing or diluting any existing contaminants through ventilation, filtration, air cleaning, and/or disinfection. Best results are achieved through a comprehensive approach combining various strategies, including those discussed in this guide.
