pi-Extended Porphyrins: The Impact of Aromatic Heterocycles on the Properties of the Largely pi-Extended Structures (Final Report_UNT_SC0016766)

Largely π-extended carbon-rich materials represent fascinating yet challenging frontiers in chemistry and materials science as it offers numerous opportunities in molecular electronics. pi-Extended porphyrins possess unique set of electronic and photophysical properties and are very attractive for a wide range of applications. However, the synthesis and functionalization of pi-extended porphyrins had been very challenging. To explore and expand this intriguing research field, it is essential to develop synthetic tools to make them accessible. Funded by the Department of Energy Basic Energy Science, my laboratory addressed these synthetic challenges by developing concise and versatile methods for pi-extended porphyrins. Significant progress has been made in multiple directions, including fusing Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH), aromatic heterocycles, antiaromatic component, and cross-conjugated component to porphyrins as well as push-pull porphyrins. The availability of these methods has made it possible to rationally design and synthesize functionalized pi-extended porphyrins. Unprecedented electronic and photophysical properties have been discovered for these pi-extended porphyrins.

Preliminary Study of a Nuclear Rocket System for Manned Planetary Missions

The primary purpose of the NERVA nuclear rocket currently under development Once developed, is to demonstrate the feasibility of nuclear rocket propulsion. Once developed, it may have application in missions such as a manned lunar landing or space station supply. Unfortunately, it is too small for manned interplanetary missions. This being the case, it was decided to examine a second-generation nuclear rocket suitable for manned interplanetary flight in order to get an idea of component characteristics and problem areas. This examination is, in general, based on current technology and includes the graphite reactor concept, a nozzle fabricated from Inconel X tubing, and conventional turbopump blading and bearings. Some of the preliminary results of this examination are reported herein.

Nitrene generation and transfer for unnatural biosynthesis in living cells

Abstract Synthetic biology has enabled the production of natural and unnatural products from inexpensive sustainable feedstocks. Yet, the scope of available products has been limited largely to compounds accessible from nature’s chemical reactions. Evolved enzymes can catalyse reactions of unnatural substrates or reactions not found in nature but often require the addition of synthetic reagents to purified enzymes or to resting cells containing those enzymes. Here we show that chemical reactions of metabolic intermediates produced intracellularly in living cells can include intermolecular nitrene transfers. The biosynthesis of N -acetoxyanilines, in combination with the generation and transfer of N -aryl nitrene intermediates from them catalysed by a cytochrome P450, generates amino alcohols, diamines, diarylamines and aminoalkyl arenes from simple carbon feedstocks. These products—common substructures of pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals—are challenging to synthesize by standard organic chemistry and were produced from inexpensive, renewable feedstocks. Evolution of the enzymes in this pathway showed that titres can be increased by engineering and that the products can be synthesized with high enantioselectivity.

Manufacturing Process Development of a Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composite Shaft for Electric Motors

Electric aircraft applications require electric motors with increased specific power and efficiency. Composite structural components in motors are a potential solution for reducing motor mass, reducing magnetic losses, and limiting undesired conduction paths for fault, electromagnetic interference, or common-mode currents. In this report, manufacturing trials for a high-speed carbon fiber reinforced polymer composite motor shaft are presented. Four prototype shafts were produced using a hybrid biaxial/triaxial fabric that was circumferentially wrapped onto an additively manufactured high-temperature washout mandrel. An additional traditional overbraid approach was also evaluated and shows promise for high-rate, high-performance parts using automated manufacturing. This paper discusses the shaft design, manufacturing methods explored, material selection, the manufacturing trials, and the lessons learned. The results of this manufacturing investigation show feasibility for manufacturing composite shafts for electric motors.

Domestically Manufactured Fuel Cells for Heavy Duty Applications

This project, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy under Award DE-EE0009248, advances the domestic development of fuel-cell stack technologies for heavy-duty transportation applications. The work directly supports the Million-Mile Fuel Cell Truck (M2FCT) initiative by improving performance, durability, and manufacturability—key requirements for next-generation hydrogen fuel-cell systems.
