Final-stage densification kinetics of direct current–sinteredZrB2

Final-stage sintering was analyzed for nominally phase pure zirconium diboride synthesized by borothermal reduction of high-purity ZrO2. Analysis was conducted on ZrB2 ceramics with relative densities greater than 90% using the Nabarro–Herring stress–directed vacancy diffusion model. Temperatures of 1900°C or above and an applied uniaxial pressure of 50 MPa were required to fully densify ZrB2 ceramics by direct current sintering. Ram travel data were collected and used to determine the relative density of the specimens during sintering. Specimens sintered between 1900 and 2100°C achieved relative densities greater than 97%, whereas specimens sintered below 1900°C failed to reach the final stage of sintering. The average grain size ranged from 1.0 to 14.7 μm. The activation energy was calculated from the slope of an Arrhenius plot that used the Kalish equation. The activation energy was 162 ± 34 kJ/mol, which is consistent with the activation energy for dislocation movement in ZrB2. The diffusion coefficients for dislocation motion that controls densification were 5.1 × 10−6 cm2/s at 1900°C and 5.1 × 10−5 cm2/s at 2100°C, as calculated from activation energy and average grain sizes. This study provides evidence that the dominant mechanism for final-stage sintering of ZrB2 ceramics is dislocation motion.

Space Station Furnace Facility. Volume 3: Program cost estimate

The approach used to estimate costs for the Space Station Furnace Facility (SSFF) is based on a computer program developed internally at Teledyne Brown Engineering (TBE). The program produces time-phased estimates of cost elements for each hardware component, based on experience with similar components. Engineering estimates of the degree of similarity or difference between the current project and the historical data is then used to adjust the computer-produced cost estimate and to fit it to the current project Work Breakdown Structure (WBS). The SSFF Concept as presented at the Requirements Definition Review (RDR) was used as the base configuration for the cost estimate. This program incorporates data on costs of previous projects and the allocation of those costs to the components of one of three, time-phased, generic WBS's. Input consists of a list of similar components for which cost data exist, number of interfaces with their type and complexity, identification of the extent to which previous designs are applicable, and programmatic data concerning schedules and miscellaneous data (travel, off-site assignments). Output is program cost in labor hours and material dollars, for each component, broken down by generic WBS task and program schedule phase.

GPS-supported smartphone app-based integrated travel diary and time-use data collection: challenges and lessons learned

Travel behaviour and time-use data are two vital data sources for travel demand modelling. Travel behaviour is traditionally collected through household travel surveys, enhanced by using GPS-supported smartphone apps for passive location data collection. However, recruiting individuals willing to install these apps with sustained motivation to continue participation has been a critical challenge. This paper shares insights from a travel and time-use data collection procedure in Chicago and Sydney using the Fourstep app. Social media platforms were utilised as a solution to recruit participants in Chicago, where an international market research company failed to accomplish the task. This paper also discusses the challenges we faced and suggests ways to overcome them, offering valuable guidance to researchers in recruiting participants for smartphone application-based data collection. It also offers an analysis of travel, time-use, and travel-based multitasking behaviours based on the data collected from the Chicago and Sydney samples.

Identifying Light-Duty Vehicle Travel from Large-Scale Multimodal Wearable GPS Data with Novelty Detection Algorithms

Identifying travel mode within travel survey data sets, especially light-duty vehicle (LDV) travel, is foundational, though nontrivial, to travel behavior analysis and fuel consumption estimation. Current travel mode detection approaches require well-sampled and balanced data sets with ground truth travel mode labels. They are rarely applied and validated on large-scale, real-world data sets, which may not satisfy the data requirements. This paper proposes an LDV travel mode detection model as a supplement to current travel mode detection methods, for the case when the training set is highly (and/or completely) unbalanced, to the extent that classical machine-learning approaches become difficult or impossible to deploy. The proposed model uses a novelty detection technique-one-class support vector machines (OCSVMs)-and a novel exhaustive feature extraction (EFE) technique on continuous time series data (i.e., Global Positioning System [GPS] speed profiles) for single-mode trip trajectories. Training and validation of the model are conducted on a large-scale, real-world data set. The proposed method accurately identifies LDV trips from a broad set of multimodal trips by leveraging a wealth of preexisting in-vehicle GPS travel data. Additional sensitivity analysis sheds light on the optimal training size, which will benefit applications limited by highly imbalanced data. The paper also discusses performance comparison with regular machine-learning approaches, the model's robustness, and the potential to extend the proposed model to multimodal prediction.

A Real-Time Data Dashboard for Monitoring Travel Behavior

When running a smartphone app-based travel behavior study, it is important to keep participants engaged in contributing data. Long study durations and/or large samples make it difficult to engage participants in reporting their travel behavior. We developed a dashboard web application called 'emdash' to facilitate and ease the data collection maintenance task. It allows deployers to view trip trajectories, track which participants are uploading data, and generate report ready plots. Emdash can also be useful for deployers to identify ways to best encourage a particular transportation mode shift and to provide feedback and reporting to participants. Using the dashboard, a single admin was able to support a classic travel study with 80 participants. The dashboard is currently deployed in a two-year electric bike (e-bike) pilot study called CanBikeCO, conducted in six locations across Colorado, USA. CanBikeCO targets carbon emissions reduction and equity improvement by evaluating changes to participants' travel behavior when they are offered free e-bikes. Each CanBikeCO location has access to their own version of emdash to help them monitor and support participants. After testing and gathering feedback, we made improvements to the dashboard's usability and scalability, and proposed a method to make detecting data issues easier. Improvements include configurable options and limiting the volume of data sent to the dashboard as study size and duration increase.

Transportation Secure Data Center: Frequently Asked Questions for Data Owners/Contributors

The Transportation Secure Data Center is a centralized repository for detailed transportation data from travel and transit surveys and studies conducted across the nation. It makes vital transportation data broadly available to users while preserving the privacy of survey participants. Hundreds of datasets from surveys and studies of household travel and transit passenger travel are archived in the TSDC, including surveys and studies conducted by state departments of transportation, metropolitan planning organizations, transit agencies, cities, and other public agencies. Detailed data from travel surveys and studies are extremely valuable for research purposes. However, the fine-grained information they contain could potentially be misused to identify individual travelers, so access to these data should only be granted with safeguards in place to protect participant privacy. The TSDC was created to address this challenge and to relieve public agencies from the burden of archiving their data and responding to data requests.

Puget Sound Regional Council 2006 Household Activity Survey

The purpose of the 2006 Puget Sound Regional Council Household Activity Survey was to provide data for travel demand models for the Puget Sound region, for the assessment of current activity and travel patterns, and for the estimation of future activity and travel within the region under various policy scenarios. One important goal of this project is to improve planners' ability to evaluate impacts of future policies and actions on travel patterns and transportation facility use through the development of a database. This database both captures the current status of activity and travel in the region and includes attitudes, preferences, and choices about activities and travel. In the design of the 2006 survey, basic demographics, activities, and tour and travel characteristics were collected for every member (including children) of 4,746 households during a consecutive 48-hour travel period. Vehicle global positioning system (GPS) data were collected from a subsample of 220 of these households, including completed activity/travel diaries for each household member. (Up to three vehicles per household were equipped with GPS units). The final GPS tracking data contained detailed information on the travel paths of 220 households with two vehicles in the same 48-hour period recorded in the diaries.

2001-2003 Ohio Statewide Household Travel Survey

The purpose of this study, conducted under the auspices of the Ohio Department of Transportation between August 2001 and May 2003, was to update the statewide database of household socioeconomic and travel information. Data insights were used to refine travel estimates, models, and forecasts throughout Ohio and specifically for the nine smallest metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs). The study area consists of all Ohio counties except for those that are within the MPO boundaries of Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Columbus. The study is an essential element in determining statewide and regional travel patterns. A total of 16,112 households provided recruitment and travel/activity data, and the information was retrieved from all household members regardless of age. A total of 122,463 trips were profiled during the survey during the 24-hour assigned weekday.
