A Survey of Methods for Measuring Thermally Induced Distortions of Test Articles Undergoing Solar Thermal Vacuum Test

Various methods of measuring the small thermally induced distortions experienced either by various points on the space vehicles or by deviations of surfaces from a known shape during solar thermal vacuum tests are examined. State-of-the-art application of both photographic and real time observation are discussed. The relative merits of each of the methods are compared and evaluated in their applications to different types of test articles and situations. Magnitudes of thermally induced distortions which may be expected to be routinely measurable by the various methods are presented and compared.

Data Analysis for GOPEX Image Frames

This article describes the data analysis based on the image frames received at the Solid State Imaging (SSI) camera of the Galileo Optical Experiment (GOPEX) demonstration conducted between December 9 and 16, 1992. Laser uplink was successfully established between the ground and the Galileo spacecraft during its second Earth-gravity-assist phase in December 1992. SSI camera frames were acquired which contained images of detected laser pulses transmitted from the Table Mountain Facility (TMF), Wrightwood, California, and the Starfire Optical Range (SOR), Albuquerque, New Mex/co. Laser pulse data were processed using standard image-processing techniques at the Multimission Image Processing Laboratory (MIPL) for preliminary pulse identification and to produce public re/ease images. Subsequent image analysis corrected for background noise to measure received pulse intensities. Data were plotted to obtain histograms on a dmly basis and were then compared with theoretical results derived from applicable weak-turbulence and strong-turbulence considerations. This article describes processing steps and compares the theories with the experimented results. Quantitative agreement was found in both turbulence regimes, and better agreement would have been found, given more received laser pulses. Future experiments should consider methods to reliably measure low-intensity pulses, and through experimented planning to geometrically locate pulse positions with greater certainty.

Satellite battery testing status

Because of the large numbers of satellite cells currently being tested and anticipated at the Naval Weapons Support Center (NAVWPNSUPPCEN) Crane, Indiana, satellite cell testing is being integrated into the Battery Test Automation Project (BTAP). The BTAP, designed to meet the growing needs for battery testing at the NAVWPNSUPPCEN Crane, will consist of several Automated Test Stations (ATSs) which monitor batteries under test. Each ATS will interface with an Automation Network Controller (ANC) which will collect test data for reduction.

MRV Challenge 3: velocity and passive scalar comparison in a 3D turbulent flow

The third iteration of a magnetic resonance velocimetry (MRV) challenge comparison activity consisting of 3D flow measurements for a turbulent flow in a water channel moving past centrally positioned cubic obstacles is reported. In this challenge iteration, MRV measurements are coupled with either temperature or concentration measurements to extend the diagnostic utility. Five research teams from around the world conducted the measurements on a single shared apparatus. The water channel included partial elements along the channel sidewalls that varied in height and precluded easy optical accessibility. In addition to a turbulent mainstream flow, a secondary flow entered the channel between the second and third cubic elements from a square injector hole at the channel bottom wall. The injector jet interacts with the mainstream flow and mixes turbulently as it advects downstream. For the selected flow regime and water solutions used as working fluids, the mixing of the higher temperature or concentration through the secondary flow with the mainstream flow satisfies the same dynamics so that both temperature and concentration fields behave as passive scalars and can be directly compared. The measurements are explained in detail by each participating team, and the results are interpolated onto a common grid and compared using line profiles, contour plots, and isosurfaces.

Test Program

A test program was set up early in the Explorer XIII program to simulate as nearly as possible all expected environmental conditions to which the spacecraft would be subjected during the ascending phase of the trajectory and while in orbit. These tests included spin, acceleration, thermal-vacuum, vibration, and shock. Functional tests were performed on individual modules of the telemeter system. The test procedure started with breadboard construction of telemeter components. Circuits were evaluated in this phase, and components chosen for prototype construction. Prior to the prototype environmental tests, it was found desirable to construct a mock-up structure for preliminary evaluation of the spacecraft hardware.
