Space telemetry degradation due to Manchester data asymmetry induced carrier tracking phase error

The deleterious effects that the Manchester (or Bi-phi) data asymmetry has on the performance of phase-modulated residual carrier communication systems are analyzed. Expressions for the power spectral density of an asymmetric Manchester data stream, the interference-to-carrier signal power ratio (I/C), and the error probability performance are derived. Since data asymmetry can cause undesired spectral components at the carrier frequency, the I/C ratio is given as a function of both the data asymmetry and the telemetry modulation index. Also presented are the data asymmetry and asymmetry-induced carrier tracking loop and the system bit-error rate to various parameters of the models.

Approximate reasoning-based learning and control for proximity operations and docking in space

A recently proposed hybrid-neutral-network and fuzzy-logic-control architecture is applied to a fuzzy logic controller developed for attitude control of the Space Shuttle. A model using reinforcement learning and learning from past experience for fine-tuning its knowledge base is proposed. Two main components of this approximate reasoning-based intelligent control (ARIC) model - an action-state evaluation network and action selection network are described as well as the Space Shuttle attitude controller. An ARIC model for the controller is presented, and it is noted that the input layer in each network includes three nodes representing the angle error, angle error rate, and bias node. Preliminary results indicate that the controller can hold the pitch rate within its desired deadband and starts to use the jets at about 500 sec in the run.

Study on the spectral efficiency of SFH-GMSK in land mobile telephone communication by direct simulation

A spread spectrum system, slow frequency hopping with GMSK (Gaussian minimum shift keying) modulation (SFH-GMSK), is proposed for mobile telephone communications. The system performance is evaluated using computer simulation and is compared with an unspread system. Results show that under multipath fading conditions, when the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is greater than 15 dB, slow frequency hopping gives some bit error rate improvement over the unspread system. Theoretical predictions indicate that a system efficiency of 20-65 users per cell can be achieved in the cellular configuration. Joint use of SFH-GMSK and FM is also investigated. It is shown that FM interference can cause serious degradation to the SFH-GMSK performance.

Truncation length for Viterbi decoding

A bound is derived and analyzed for the bit error rate (BER) of a Viterbi decoder with survivor truncation. Estimates of the SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) loss on the AWGN (additive white Gaussian noise) channel due to truncation are obtained for convolutional codes. Larger truncation lengths are required than the smallest value that does not effectively decrease the code's free distance, especially at low Eb/N0.

The effect of on/off indicator design on state confusion, preference, and response time performance, executive summary

Investigated are five designs of software-based ON/OFF indicators in a hypothetical Space Station Power System monitoring task. The hardware equivalent of the indicators used in the present study is the traditional indicator light that illuminates an ON label or an OFF label. Coding methods used to represent the active state were reverse video, color, frame, check, or reverse video with check. Display background color was also varied. Subjects made judgments concerning the state of indicators that resulted in very low error rates and high percentages of agreement across indicator designs. Response time measures for each of the five indicator designs did not differ significantly, although subjects reported that color was the best communicator. The impact of these results on indicator design is discussed.

Multi-stage decoding of multi-level modulation codes

Various types of multi-stage decoding for multi-level modulation codes are investigated. It is shown that if the component codes of a multi-level modulation code and types of decoding at various stages are chosen properly, high spectral efficiency and large coding gain can be achieved with reduced decoding complexity. Particularly, it is shown that the difference in performance between the suboptimum multi-stage soft-decision maximum likelihood decoding of a modulation code and the single-stage optimum soft-decision decoding of the code is very small, only a fraction of dB loss in signal to noise ratio at a bit error rate (BER) of 10(exp -6).

Interference susceptibility measurements for an MSK satellite communication link

The results are presented of measurements of the degradation of an MSK satellite link due to modulated and CW (unmodulated) interference. These measurements were made using a hardware based satellite communication link simulator at NASA-Lewis. The results indicate the amount of bit error rate degradation caused by CW interference as a function of frequency and power level, and the degradation caused by adjacent channel and cochannel modulated interference as a function of interference power level. Results were obtained for both the uplink case (including satellite nonlinearity) and the downlink case (linear channel).

Impact of a process improvement program in a production software environment: Are we any better?

For the past 15 years, Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) has participated in a process improvement program as a member of the Software Engineering Laboratory (SEL), which is sponsored by GSFC. The benefits CSC has derived from involvement in this program are analyzed. In the environment studied, it shows that improvements were indeed achieved, as evidenced by a decrease in error rates and costs over a period in which both the size and the complexity of the developed systems increased substantially. The principles and mechanics of the process improvement program, the lessons CSC has learned, and how CSC has capitalized on these lessons are also discussed.

FEC decoder design optimization for mobile satellite communications

A new telecommunications service for location determination via satellite is being proposed for the continental USA and Europe, which provides users with the capability to find the location of, and communicate from, a moving vehicle to a central hub and vice versa. This communications system is expected to operate in an extremely noisy channel in the presence of fading. In order to achieve high levels of data integrity, it is essential to employ forward error correcting (FEC) encoding and decoding techniques in such mobile satellite systems. A constraint length k = 7 FEC decoder has been implemented in a single chip for such systems. The single chip implementation of the maximum likelihood decoder helps to minimize the cost, size, and power consumption, and improves the bit error rate (BER) performance of the mobile earth terminal (MET).

Considerations of digital phase modulation for narrowband satellite mobile communication

The Inmarsat-M system for mobile satellite communication is specified as a frequency division multiple access (FDMA) system, applying Offset Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) for transmitting 8 kbit/sec in 10 kHz user channel bandwidth. We consider Digital Phase Modulation (DPM) as an alternative modulation format for INMARSAT-M. DPM is similar to Continuous Phase Modulation (CPM) except that DPM has a finite memory in the premodular filter with a continuous varying modulation index. It is shown that DPM with 64 states in the VA obtains a lower bit error rate (BER). Results for a 5 kHz system, with the same 8 kbit/sec transmitted bitstream, is also presented.

A novel scheme to aid coherent detection of GMSK signals in fast Rayleigh fading channels

A novel scheme to insert carrier pilot to Gaussian Minimum Shift Keying (GMSK) signal using Binary Block Code (BBC) and a highpass filter in baseband is proposed. This allows the signal to be coherently demodulated even in a fast Rayleigh fading environment. As an illustrative example, the scheme is applied to a 16 kb/s GMSK signal, and its performance over a fast Rayleigh fading channel is investigated using computer simulation. This modem's 'irreducible error rate' is found to be Pe = 5.5 x 10(exp -5) which is more than that of differential detection. The modem's performance in Rician fading channel is currently under investigation.

Analysis of space environment effects on active fiber optic links orbited aboard the LDEF

The interim analysis correlates the results of the 'Preliminary Analysis of WL Experiment no. 701, Space Environment Effects on Operating Optic Systems' (NASA Report CP-3134) with space simulated post retrieval terrestrial studies performed on the M0004 experiment. Temperature cycling measurements were performed on the active optical data links for the purpose of assessing link signal to noise ratio and bit error rate performance some 69 months following the experiment deployment in low earth orbit. The early results indicate a high correlation between pre-orbit, orbit recorded, and post orbit functionality of the first known and longest space demonstration of operating optic fibers.

Performance measurement results for a 220 Mbps QPPM optical communication receiver with an EG/G Slik APD

The performance of a 220 Mbps quaternary pulse position modulation (QPPM) optical communication receiver with a 'Slik' silicon avalanche photodiode (APD) and a wideband transimpedance preamplifier in a small hybrid circuit module was measured. The receiver performance had been poor due to the lack of a wideband and low noise transimpedance preamplifier. With the new APB preamplifier module, the receiver achieved a bit error rate (BER) of 10 exp -6 at an average received input optical signal power of 4.2 nW, which corresponds to an average of 80 received (incident) signal photons per information bit.

Estimation variance bounds of importance sampling simulations in digital communication systems

In practical applications of importance sampling (IS) simulation, two basic problems are encountered, that of determining the estimation variance and that of evaluating the proper IS parameters needed in the simulations. The authors derive new upper and lower bounds on the estimation variance which are applicable to IS techniques. The upper bound is simple to evaluate and may be minimized by the proper selection of the IS parameter. Thus, lower and upper bounds on the improvement ratio of various IS techniques relative to the direct Monte Carlo simulation are also available. These bounds are shown to be useful and computationally simple to obtain. Based on the proposed technique, one can readily find practical suboptimum IS parameters. Numerical results indicate that these bounding techniques are useful for IS simulations of linear and nonlinear communication systems with intersymbol interference in which bit error rate and IS estimation variances cannot be obtained readily using prior techniques.

Adaptation of a matrix parameterization of the middle atmospheric radiative cooling for an arbitrary vertical coordinate grid

Matrices corresponding to a revised vertical grid are shown to be derived from the original grid by integrating the radiative cooling rate over model layers. The method is applied to temperature profiles that represent average or extreme atmospheric conditions and a range of vertical resolutions. The example makes use of the 15-micron CO2 band parameterization proposed by Akmaev and Shved (1982) for the LTE region of the middle atmosphere. Cooling rate errors provided by the present method are not more than 0.11 K/day for a vertical grid spacing of less than 5 km. The matrix transformation method is shown to be valuable for adapting effective matrix parameterizations of middle atmosphere cooling to atmospheric models with arbitrary vertical resolutions.

Comparative study on the performance of power and bandwidth efficient modulations in LMSS under fading and interference

Aspects of error performance of various power and bandwidth efficient modulations for the land mobile satellite systems (LMSS) were investigated under multipath fading and interferences by using Monte-Carlo simulation. A differential detection for 16QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) was proposed to cope with Ricean fading and Doppler shift. Computer simulation results show that the performance of 16QAM with differential detection is as good as that of 16PSK with coherent detection and 3 dB better than that of 16PSK with differential detection, although it degrades by about 4.5 dB as compared to 16QAM with coherent detection under an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. For the nonlinear channels, 16QAM with modified signal constellations is introduced and analyzed. The simulation results show that the modified 16QAM exhibits a gain of 2.5 dB over 16PSK under traveling-wave tube nonlinearity, and about 4 dB gain over 16PSK at the bit error rate of 10 exp -5 under AWGN. Computer simulation results for modified 16 QAM under cochannel interference and adjacent-channel interference are also presented.
