Techno-Economic, Feasibility, and Life Cycle Analysis of Renewable Propane: 2025 Update

To clarify the current and future landscape for renewable propane (RP) production, this work evaluates the value proposition of recovering RP from existing and planned hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) biorefineries and surveys emerging technologies under development or deployment. HEFA biorefineries co-produce a propane-rich fuel gas stream, normally used to meet HEFA process heat requirements, from which propane can be recovered and sold to create an additional revenue stream alongside liquid transportation fuels such as renewable diesel (RD) and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This report updates and extends a 2022 analysis of RP recovery from HEFA facilities by escalating capital and operating costs to 2024 prices, incorporating recent policy developments (including the Section 45Z Clean Fuel Production Credit), evaluating RP recovery for both RD- and SAF-focused HEFA facilities at two scales (3,000 and 75,000 barrels per day of feedstock), and quantifying the impact of RP recovery on HEFA liquid-fuel carbon intensity (CI) and associated tax credits using the 45ZCF-GREET model. For a 3,000 BPD RD-focused HEFA facility, approximately 3.5 million gallons per year (MGPY) of RP can be recovered; in this base case, the estimated payback period is 18 months based on the total installed cost of the RP recovery equipment and 36 months based on the total capital investment for the entire RP recovery project. The payback period is slightly shorter for the analogous SAF-focused configuration (approximately 4.3 MGPY RP). Sensitivity analysis shows that CAPEX magnitude, RP recovery plant scale, and CI-driven tax credit valuations are the dominant determinants of project viability. RP recovery may increase the CI of HEFA liquid fuels, which can reduce liquid-fuel tax credits (a key revenue stream for the HEFA biorefinery) and lengthen payback periods. However, RP recovery generally remains economically favorable across a wide range of plausible scenarios and market conditions. The report also summarizes emerging pathways that could expand future RP supply.

Economic, Greenhouse Gas, and Resource Assessment for Fuel and Protein Production from Microalgae: 2022 Algae Harmonization Update

This report presents an updated “harmonization study” documenting the collaborative analysis of saline microalgae cultivation and conversion to fuels and products. Four national laboratory modeling teams reconvened to investigate the resource, economic, and environmental sustainability implications of integrated systems encompassing large-scale algae farms and conversion biorefineries. Relative to prior harmonization analyses conducted by these partners, the present effort focuses on more near-term technology potential based on the use of nutrient-replete, high-protein algal biomass compositions (more readily achievable today without sacrificing cultivation productivity) coupled with individual algae farms varying in size but generally smaller at 3,900 acres on average (more realistic in practice than a fixed 5,000-acre farm scale previously considered). Additionally, the present assessment adds further granularity around carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) sourcing and transport via carbon capture of nearby point sources, as well as handling of high-saline cultivation media and resultant blowdown/disposal processing. Finally, this assessment focuses on conversion opportunities to produce both fuel (prioritizing sustainable aviation fuel [SAF], in this case via hydrothermal liquefaction) and protein products for the food and feed markets, recognizing growing needs for such products.

Grid Operator Analytics and Assessment Tools for Inverter- Based Resources Dominated Grid (GOAAT-IBR) Project Update

This presentation provides an update on the OPTIMA GOAAT project, with emphasis on the cloud-native data platform developed in-house to ingest, manage, and operationalize high-resolution power system data. Since our last NASPI presentation, accessible via OSTI ID #2671437, the project team advanced the design and deployment of a scalable architecture capable of handling both synchronized and non-synchronized streams, including PMU, point-on-wave (POW), COMTRADE, and SCADA data. These materials review the project status, recent progress, and key lessons learned. The core of the presentation examines the architecture and engineering of our cloud-native ingestion and data management platform. We then explain how pipelines were designed to collect, normalize, time-align, store, and serve heterogeneous data at scale. We will discuss design choices such as data models, streaming versus batch ingestion, storage tiers, and interoperability with analytics applications. Practical experiences with cloud-native technologies were shared during the event, including benefits, limitations, and integration challenges in a utility environment, along with methods used to improve performance, reduce latency, and optimize resource usage. The presentation also showcases user interface designs and visualization tools that convert raw measurements and analytics results into intuitive, actionable insights for operators and engineers. During the presentation examples were provided demonstrating how visualization, event views, and summarized analytics enhance situational awareness and support operational decision-making. These use cases illustrate how a well-designed data infrastructure can bridge the gap between high-volume measurements and practical grid operations.

PV Fleet Performance Data Initiative 2026 Update

We provide an update on the PV Fleet Performance Data Initiative at the 2026 PV Reliability Workshop. Our latest runs incorporate additional data sources and an integrated analysis pipeline run on our Kestrel HPC cluster. Initial degradation findings suggest that single-axis tracked PV systems exhibit higher performance loss rates than fixed-tilt systems, an increase of 0.5 %/yr, almost double. We discuss multiple methods for identifying stuck tracker rows, which are suspected to be a contributor to the enhanced degradation. Through satellite image detection and data-driven approaches we address the topic of identifying when stuck trackers are occuring and to what extent the problem exists. Preliminary results suggest that the increased performance loss detected for the tracked systems would be consistent with stuck tracker rows affecting on the order of 5% - 10% of the system.

Updates to Anaerobic Digestion Pathways for Animal Manure in R&D GREET 2025 Rev.1

Renewable natural gas (RNG) produced from animal manure can significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the transportation sector, but accurate life cycle assessment (LCA) of this fuel depends on precise modeling of emissions from business-as-usual (BAU) manure manage ment. This report documents updates to the Research & Development version of the Greenhouse Gases, Regulated Emissions, and Energy Use in Technologies (R&D GREET) model that attempt to improve that precision.

Updating and Refining BISON TRISO Assessment

Several advanced reactor concepts consider tristructural isotropic (TRISO) fuel in their designs. To support the advanced reactor industry, the Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation (NEAMS) program within the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is developing modeling and simulation capabilities within the BISON fuel performance code. Assessment of these capabilities against available experi- mental data, such as the Advanced Gas Reactor (AGR) program, is essential in instilling confidence in the code predictions. Associated uncertainties in model inadequacy, experimental measurements, and manufacturing are also of importance. This report discusses the updating and standardization of the existing assessment suite in BISON for TRISO fuel performance analysis. The cases considered the AGR-1, AGR-2, and AGR-3/4 experimental programs. The report also includes a preliminary investigation into the sources of model inadequacy associated with silver (Ag) release fractions using the AGR-2 Compact 2-1-2 as a case study. The results indicate that uncertainties in the operating temperatures supplied to the model and the form of those temperature conditions (spatially averaged versus spatially resolved) both affect Ag release predictions. This suggests that previously observed model inadequacy can be attributed to both physical models and the operating conditions supplied to them. These findings will be leveraged to guide development of assessment cases for additional experiments and refinement of physical models for behaviors that potentially influence Ag release, such as palladium penetration.
