A Long-Range Precision Ranging System

A technique is presented that may be used for precision real-time continuous range measuring at long ranges. The technique uses a carrier that is phase modulated by a pseudo-random binary sequence. The characteristics of the sequence that make it acquirable are discussed. The general form of a receiver capable of tracking the carrier is given and is shown to be a kind of phase-locked loop. A two-loop system capable of tracking a pseudo-random sequence and its clock is given. The combination of the receiver and the sequence tracking system form a ranging receiver. The power division necessary between the carrier and the sidebands is shown to be determined by the noise bandwidths of the two tracking systems. The bandwidths necessary for tracking space probes and Earth satellites are given and some experiments in radar-tracking Earth satellites are described. Based on these experiments, estimates are made of the useful range of such a system in tracking space probes.

Frequency Stabilization of DFB Laser Diodes at 1572 nm for Spaceborne Lidar Measurements of CO2

We report a fiber-based, pulsed laser seeder system that rapidly switches among 6 wavelengths across atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) absorption line near 1572.3 nm for measurements of global CO2 mixing ratios to 1-ppmv precision. One master DFB laser diode has been frequency-locked to the CO2 line center using a frequency modulation technique, suppressing its peak-to-peak frequency drifts to 0.3 MHz at 0.8 sec averaging time over 72 hours. Four online DFB laser diodes have been offset-locked to the master laser using phase locked loops, with virtually the same sub-MHz absolute accuracy. The 6 lasers were externally modulated and then combined to produce the measurement pulse train.

A Low SWaP-C prototype Ka-band Frequency Synthesizer for Atomic Clocks

We present a low size, weight, power and cost (SWaP-C) prototype circuit of a Ka-band frequency synthesizer. It takes advantage of a phase-locked loop single integrated circuit (IC) and harmonic generation with high speed CMOS gates. We use a direct digital synthesizer (DDS) IC to tune the final output with microHertz resolution. An ultra-low-power micro controller that could serve as the clock controller is used to control the PLL and the DDS. All components are commercial off the shelf (COTS) with acceptable industrial support. The total power consumption is about 1.6 Watt with -45 dBm useful output at 40.507347996 GHz. The short-term instability introduced by the prototype is 7.3E-14 at 1s. The prototyped subsystem uses COTS demonstration boards for the sake of agile prototyping. There is still significant margin for improvement of the size and weight.

Precision of Spacecraft Doppler Tracking at Low Signal-to-Noise Ratios

The signal-to-noise ratio received at Earth is typically larger than 10 dB-Hz for radio tracking of a spacecraft in deep space, allowing a phase-locked loop to execute reliable carrier tracking. Recently, missions have been proposed to utilize low-gain antennas for Doppler tracking where the signal-to-noise ratio may be at the single-digit (dB-Hz) level. In this work, we discuss spacecraft Doppler tracking at these low signal-to-noise ratios through an analysis of thermal noise on the radio link, results from ground testing with the Deep Space Network, and demonstrations with an active spacecraft. We show that by utilizing an open-loop receiver to capture the carrier signal and by applying post-processing techniques, radio data with the signal-to-noise ratio as low as 4 dB-Hz can be used to derive Doppler data with precision sufficient for tracking a spacecraft in deep space.

Synchrophasor measurement method for power systems

A synchrophasor measurement method for a device configured to take synchronized measurements in a power system is provided. The synchrophasor measurement method includes receiving global positioning system (GPS)-synchronized samples of a signal sensed by the device from the power system; determining a level of distortion of the signal; selecting, based on the level of distortion, a computation method, the computation method being one of an improved zero-crossing (IZC) method and an enhanced phase-lock-loop (EPLL) method; performing the selected computation method to determine at least one parameter of the signal at a reporting frequency, which is at least twice a line frequency of the power system; and outputting, at the reporting frequency, the at least one parameter to an operator of the power system to allow the operator to perform at least one of a monitoring and a controlling of at least one element of the power system.

Bulk Power System Dynamics with Varying Levels of Synchronous Generators and Grid-Forming Power Inverters: Preprint

Inverters using phase-locked loops for control depend on voltages generated by synchronous machines to operate. This might be problematic if much of the conventional generation fleet is displaced by inverters. To solve this problem, grid-forming control for inverters has been proposed as being capable of autonomously regulating grid voltages and frequency. Presently, the performance of bulk power systems with massive penetrations of grid-forming inverters has not been thoroughly studied to elucidate benefits. Hence, this paper presents inverter models with two grid-forming strategies: virtual oscillator control and droop control. The two models are specifically developed to be used in positive-sequence simulation packages and have been implemented in PSLF. The implementations are used to study the performance of bulk power grids incorporating inverters with grid-forming capability. Specifically, simulations are conducted on a modified IEEE 39-bus test system and the micro-WECC test system with varying levels of synchronous and inverter-based generation. The dynamic performance of the tested systems with grid-forming inverters during contingency events is better than cases with only synchronous generation.

Analysis Of Lock Detection In Costas Loops

Report presents analysis of detection of phase lock in Costas loops, used in coherent binary-phase-shift-keying communication systems to track both subcarrier and suppressed carrier signals. Detection of phase lock important part of operation and monitoring of operation of Costas or other tracking loop, provides insight into behavior of loop in real time. Focuses on effects of phase jitter and correlation between samples of phase error in all-digital Costas loop, in which lock detection implemented via algorithm. Applicable to both sinusoidal and square-law carrier signals, incorporates new mathematical models of square-law and absolute-value detectors.

Single Stage PLL-less Decoupled Active and Reactive Power Control for Weak Grid Interactive Inverters

This paper presents a single stage phase locked loop-less (PLL-less) active and reactive power (PQ) control for single-phase weak grid interactive inverters. The absence of the PLL requirement in the proposed PQ control enhances the stability margin comparing to conventional current control approaches in both the stationary or the synchronous reference frame. Additionally, the proposed control scheme enables direct PQ control with a single loop control structure. This paper demonstrates that the proposed PLL-less PQ control scheme is asymptotically stable if the controller gains are positive. The necessary conditions for supplying the rated active power into the weak grid are derived. The provided analysis shows that certain amount of reactive power injection is necessary to avoid point of common coupling (PCC) voltage collapse when the rated active power is injected into the weak grid. Several case studies are provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed PLL-less PQ control scheme under weak grid condition.

Phase Locking of a THz QC-VECSEL to a Microwave Reference

We report high-resolution frequency study and phase locking have been performed on a terahertz (THz) quantum-cascade vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser (QC-VECSEL) operating around 2.5 THz. A subharmonic diode mixer is used to down convert the THz signal to a 100 MHz intermediate frequency that is phase locked to a stable 100 MHz microwave reference. Between 90% and 95% of the QC-VECSEL signal is locked within 2 Hz of the multiplied RF reference, and amplitude fluctuations on the order of 1%–10% are observed, depending on the bias point of the QC-VECSEL. The bandwidth of the locking loop is ~1 MHz. Many noise peaks in the IF signal are observed, likely corresponding to mechanical resonances in the 10 Hz–10 kHz. These peaks are generally -30 to -60 dB below the main tone and are below the phase noise level of the multiplied RF reference that ultimately limits the phase noise of the locked QC-VECSEL.

Internal noise of a phase-locked receiver with a loop-controlled synthesizer

A local oscillator design that uses a digitally programmed frequency synthesizer instead of an analog VCO was proposed. The integral of the synthesizer input, the digital phase, is a convenient measure of integrated Doppler. The internal noise of such a receiver was examined. At high carrier margin, the local oscillator phase noise equals that of the Block IV receiver, about 2 deg rms at S-band, whereas the digital phase noise is about 0.5 deg rms.

Advanced technology satellite demodulator development

Ford Aerospace has developed a proof-of-concept satellite 8 phase shift keying (PSK) modulation and coding system operating in the Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) mode at a data range of 200 Mbps using rate 5/6 forward error correction coding. The 80 Msps 8 PSK modem was developed in a mostly digital form and is amenable to an ASIC realization in the next phase of development. The codec was developed as a paper design only. The power efficiency goal was to be within 2 dB of theoretical at a bit error rate (BER) of 5x10(exp 7) while the measured implementation loss was 4.5 dB. The bandwidth efficiency goal was 2 bits/sec/Hz while the realized bandwidth efficiency was 1.8 bits/sec/Hz. The burst format used a preamble of only 40 8 PSK symbol times including 32 symbols of all zeros and an eight symbol unique word. The modem and associated special test equipment (STE) were fabricated mostly on a specially designed stitch-weld board although a few of the highest rate circuits were built on printed circuit cards. All the digital circuits were ECL to support the clock rates of from 80 MHz to 360 MHz. The transmitter and receiver matched filters were square-root Nyquist bandpass filters realized at the 3.37 GHz i.f. The modem operated as a coherent system although no analog phase locked (PLL) loop was employed. Within the budgetary constraints of the program, the approach to the demodulator has been proven and is eligible to proceed to the next phase of development of a satellite demodulator engineering model. This would entail the development of an ASIC version of the digital portion of the demodulator, and MMIC version of the quadrature detector, and SAW Nyquist filters to realize the bandwidth efficiency.

Blackstart and Fault Ride-Through Capability of DFIG-Based Wind Turbines

Grid-forming wind turbines must be able to re-energize transmission branches, motor loads, unbalanced loads, and power electronics loads following a blackout. Further, they must ride through faults that can arise during restoration. To tackle these challenges, this paper sets forth a grid-forming control strategy for wind turbines using doubly-fed induction generators (DFIGs). In particular, a special set of feedforward control loops are engineered to mitigate the impacts of restoration transients as well as symmetrical and asymmetrical faults on the regulation of DFIG rotor currents and stator voltages. This paper also leverages two-axis anti-windup regulators to bound two-axis voltage and current commands within ratings. As a result, the controller performance is demonstrated via a high-fidelity simulation model of a notional wind-dominant grid.

Understanding Impacts of Frequency Calculations on Underfrequency Load Shedding

Power system fundamental frequency-dependent protection decisions and control decisions are increasingly common in the distribution system space. Understanding the algorithms used in frequency measurements is critical to understanding the decisions made by the many intelligent electronic devices in the power system. These decisions are critically important for reliability analysis for interconnected power systems as they bear directly on resource planning to mitigate under-frequency conditions that would result in under-frequency load shedding (UFLS). This work aims to improve the understanding of frequency measurement algorithms, evaluate the intelligent electronic devices that use frequency measurements for decision making, and understand the algorithms' direct impact on frequency related decision making. First, this work presents background information on the use of frequency measurements in protection logic, specifically UFLS. Second, the paper presents a relay hardware evaluation test bed used to detect and protect systems from under-frequency events. Finally, the paper presents the dynamic events used to evaluate commercially available, off-the-shelf relay equipment and the results from the relay evaluation.
