Turbulence measurements in the compressor exit flow of a General Electric CF6-50 engine

Ruggedized cooled film probes were used to measure CF6-50 compressor exit turbulence properties at three different engine idle condition test points. The turbulence probe was coupled to a constant temperature anemometer and signal conditioning system. An on-line readout system connected to the anemometer was used to check the data as it was acquired. At engine idle conditions, the turbulence intensity ranged from 4.8 percent to 5.6 percent and the length scale ranged from 5.64 cm to 6.95 cm. The length scale values are somewhat larger than the passage height at the measurement plane (5.54 cm), which indicates that the shape of the turbulent eddies are elongated in the axial direction. The microscale values range from about 0.73 cm to about 0.98 cm. Power spectral density distributions show that a large proportion of the turbulent energy at the measurement plane is concentrated at frequencies below one kilohertz.

The feasibility of inflight measurement of lightning strike parameters

The appearance of nonmetallic structural materials and microelectronics in aircraft design has resulted in a need for better knowledge of hazardous environments such as lightning and the effects these environments have on the aircraft. This feasibility study was performed to determine the lightning parameters in the greatest need of clarification and the performance requirements of equipment necessary to sense and record these parameters on an instrumented flight research aircraft. It was found that electric field rate of change, lightning currents, and induced voltages in aircraft wiring are the parameters of greatest importance. Flat-plate electric field sensors and resistive current shunts are proposed for electric field and current sensors, to provide direct measurements of these parameters. Six bit analog-to-digital signal conversion at a 5 nanosecond sampling rate, short-term storage of 85000 bits and long term storage of 5 x 10 to the 7th power bits of electric field, current and induced voltage data on the airplane are proposed, with readout and further analysis to be accomplished on the ground. A NASA F-106B was found to be suitable for use as the research aircraft because it has a minimum number of possible lightning attachment points, space for the necessary instrumentation, and appears to meet operational requirements. Safety considerations are also presented.

Optically isolated logarithmic nanoammeter capable of floating to 5 kilovolts

A logarithmic current-measuring instrument was developed to measure plasma coupling currents at a common mode voltage of 5 kilovolts. Positive or negative currents can be measured from 10 to the -9th power to .001 ampere direct current. Optical isolation is used to control input switching and to provide data referenced to ground potential. Analog meter readouts as well as zero to five volt outputs are provided for peripheral data collection. Six independent channels are provided. Three measure positive currents, and three measure negative currents. Although designed for vacuum operation, it can be used equally well in air to measure low currents at high common mode voltages.

CCD sensors for spacecraft optical navigation

The optical navigation process uses spaceborne measurements of the apparent direction vector from the spacecraft to a target body, (planet, satellite, star, etc.) to improve estimates of the spacecraft trajectory. Ground-based controllers assimilate the optical measurements, together with spacecraft radio-tracking data and target ephemeris data, to generate a best estimate of the trajectory relative to the target. The present paper deals with a development program supporting the use of (solid state) CCD (Charged Coupled Device) imagers for spacecraft navigation. It is shown that stars can be detected that are two to three magnitudes fainter than with an equivalent vidicon based instrument, that effects of global response nonuniformity and dark current spikes can be essentially eliminated from the data as a result of the reproducibility of both effects, and that charge trailing during readout of star image data can lead to position measurement errors.

A superconducting gyroscope to test Einstein's general theory of relativity

Schiff (1960) proposed a new test of general relativity based on measuring the precessions of the spin axes of gyroscopes in earth orbit. Since 1963 a Stanford research team has been developing an experiment to measure the two effects calculated by Schiff. The gyroscope consists of a uniform sphere of fused quartz 38 mm in diameter, coated with superconductor, electrically suspended and spinning at about 170 Hz in vacuum. The paper describes the proposed flight apparatus and the current state of development of the gyroscope, including techniques for manufacturing and measuring the gyro rotor and housing, generating ultralow magnetic fields, and mechanizing the readout.

Redox flow cell energy storage systems

The redox flow cell energy storage system being developed by NASA for use in remote power systems and distributed storage installations for electric utilities is presented. The system under consideration is an electrochemical storage device which utilizes the oxidation and reduction of two fully soluble redox couples (acidified chloride solutions of chromium and iron) as active electrode materials separated by a highly selective ion exchange membrane. The reactants are contained in large storage tanks and pumped through a stack of redox flow cells where the electrochemical reactions take place at porous carbon felt electrodes. Redox equipment has allowed the incorporation of state of charge readout, stack voltage control and system capacity maintenance (rebalance) devices to regulate cells in a stack jointly. A 200 W, 12 V system with a capacity of about 400 Wh has been constructed, and a 2 kW, 10kWh system is planned.

Two-dimensional ultraviolet imagery with a microchannel-plate/resistive-anode detector

An imaging ultraviolet detector has been designed for use with a precision pointed telescope flown on a sounding rocket. Resolution of better than 80 microns over a field of 5 mm has been achieved. The ultraviolet image is converted to electrons at the front surface of a CsI coated chevron microchannel-plate electron multiplier. For each photoelectron, the multiplier produces a burst of about 3,000,000 electrons, which impinges on a tellurium-coated resistive anode with four evaporated hyperbolic readout electrodes. The sizes of the four resulting output pulses are digitized to 10 bit accuracy and telemetered to the ground, where they are divided in pairs to give the x and y coordinates of the photoelectron event. The coordinates are used to generate a picture in real time, and are recorded for computer processing later. The detector was successfully flown in December 1978. Good images of Jupiter and Capella in hydrogen Lyman alpha emission were obtained.

Telemetry of intracranial pressure

A completely implantable epidural pressure telemetry system designed for accurate measurement of intracranial pressure (ICP) is described. The implant device is batteryless, providing unlimited operating life. The described system uses a capacitive pressure transducer with excellent long-term stability. Once detected with the transducer and converted to a frequency with the oscillator electronics, the pressure signal is digitized. It is then telemetered without the possibility of further degradation. After detection with the small external module, the data can be retransmitted by a radio link for complete patient mobility or the energizer signal pickup module can be wired to a bedside readout unit. Continuous data are available from the system so that the dynamic ICP changes reflecting arterial blood pressure can be observed and used for diagnosis.

A versatile burst generator for LDV

A laser-Doppler velocimeter (LDV) burst generator developed for calibration of an LDV before an actual test is described. This generator uses voltage-controlled oscillators to produce the information frequency up to 1 MHz and the pedestal frequency up to 10 MHz. The amplitude and the frequency of each signal can be adjusted independently, and the generator is capable of producing a single burst or a variety of periodic and aperiodic bursts. Variable symmetry in the burst signal can be introduced to the point of producing the 'double-pulse' burst. An LED display is used for the readout of the information and the pedestal frequencies.

Optical mass memory investigation

The MASTER 1 optical mass storage system advanced working model (AWM) was designed to demonstrate recording and playback of imagery data and to enable quantitative data to be derived as to the statistical distribution of raw errors experienced through the system. The AWM consists of two subsystems, the recorder and storage and retrieval. The recorder subsystem utilizes key technologies such as an acoustic travelling wave lens to achieve recording of digital data on fiche at a rate of 30 Mbits/sec, whereas the storage and retrieval reproducer subsystem utilizes a less complex optical system that employs an acousto-optical beam deflector to achieve data readout at a 5 Mbits/sec rate. The system has the built in capability for detecting and collecting error statistics. The recorder and storage and retrieval subsystems operate independent of one another and are each constructed in modular form with each module performing independent functions. The operation of each module and its interface to other modules is controlled by one controller for both subsystems.
