Improvements on Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) Codes and High-Performance Neuromorphic Engineering for Communication Systems
Belief propagation (BP) on LDPC codes is an iterative decoding algorithm that performs information transfer on the Tanner graph, which represents the code. In each iteration, the algorithm exchanges information (LLR) between variable nodes and check nodes through the edges of the graph. LLR values represent the probability that a given bit in a transmitted codeword equals 0 or 1, given a received word. In the hardware part, recent advancements in intelligent technologies, such as artificial intelligence, big data analytics, autonomous vehicles, and speech/image recognition, have heightened the demand for faster calculations and reduced energy consumption.

Simplified command and range detection system
Communication system processes subcarrier that is modulated with sequential range codes and with command data. Loop locks in on range codes as they occur in sequence. When range code modulated with data-frequency arrives, loop switches to DEMOD to receive data.
Self-Organizing OFDMA System for Broadband Communication
Systems and methods for a self-organizing OFDMA system for broadband communication are provided. In certain embodiments a communication node for a self organizing network comprises a communication interface configured to transmit data to and receive data from a plurality of nodes; and a processing unit configured to execute computer readable instructions. Further, computer readable instructions direct the processing unit to identify a sub-region within a cell, wherein the communication node is located in the sub-region; and transmit at least one data frame, wherein the data from the communication node is transmitted at a particular time and frequency as defined within the at least one data frame, where the time and frequency are associated with the sub-region.
Communication theory of quantum systems
Communication theory problems incorporating quantum effects for optical-frequency applications are discussed. Under suitable conditions, a unique quantum channel model corresponding to a given classical space-time varying linear random channel is established. A procedure is described by which a proper density-operator representation applicable to any receiver configuration can be constructed directly from the channel output field. Some examples illustrating the application of our methods to the development of optical quantum channel representations are given. Optimizations of communication system performance under different criteria are considered. In particular, certain necessary and sufficient conditions on the optimal detector in M-ary quantum signal detection are derived. Some examples are presented. Parameter estimation and channel capacity are discussed briefly.
Wide Bandgap Semiconductor Devices and Systems for Communications in Extreme Environment
The feasibility of gallium nitride based wide bandgap semiconductor devices for signal amplification in extreme planetary environment is investigated. The measured performance of these devices at S-band, X-band, and Ka-band are presented. The data indicates excellent performance at the above frequencies. Potential application of these devices includes communication systems required to operate in the extreme hot environment of Venus and in the extreme cold and high radiation environment of Jupiter’s icy moons.
Wide Bandgap Semiconductor Devices & Systems for Communications in Extreme Environment
The feasibility of Ka-band gallium nitride (GaN) based high power amplifier (HPA) for signal amplification in extreme planetary environment is investigated and its measured performance is presented. The data includes Pout, PAE, EVM for several waveforms and data rates, output spectrum, IMD, Noise Figure, and Gain. The data indicates excellent overall performance. Potential application of this HPA includes communication systems required to operate in the extreme hot environment of Mercury and Venus, extreme cold and high radiation environment of Jupiter’s icy moons, and Artemis missions that involve human/robotic exploration and long-term presence on the Moon.

Optical shutter switching matrix
The interface switching systems are discussed which are related to those used in the Space Shuttle ground control system, transmission systems, communications systems, and airborne radar electronic countermeasure systems. The main goal is to identify a need that exists throughout the comprehensive information processing and communications disciplines supporting the Space Shuttle and Space Station programs, and introduce one viable approach to satisfy that need. The proposed device, described in NASA patent entitled 'Optical Shutter Switch Matrix', is discussed.
Ada/POSIX binding: A focused Ada investigation
NASA is seeking an operating system interface definition (OSID) for the Space Station Program (SSP) in order to take advantage of the commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products available today and the many that are expected in the future. NASA would also like to avoid the reliance on any one source for operating systems, information system, communication system, or instruction set architecture. The use of the Portable Operating System Interface for Computer Environments (POSIX) is examined as a possible solution to this problem. Since Ada is already the language of choice for SSP, the question of an Ada/POSIX binding is addressed. The intent of the binding is to provide access to the POSIX standard operation system (OS) interface and environment, by which application portability of Ada applications will be supported at the source code level. A guiding principle of Ada/POSIX binding development is a clear conformance of the Ada interface with the functional definition of POSIX. The interface is intended to be used by both application developers and system implementors. The objective is to provide a standard that allows a strictly conforming application source program that can be compiled to execute on any conforming implementation. Special emphasis is placed on first providing those functions and facilities that are needed in a wide variety of commercial applications
A study of System Interface Sets (SIS) for the host, target and integration environments of the Space Station Program (SSP)
System interface sets (SIS) for large, complex, non-stop, distributed systems are examined. The SIS of the Space Station Program (SSP) was selected as the focus of this study because an appropriate virtual interface specification of the SIS is believed to have the most potential to free the project from four life cycle tyrannies which are rooted in a dependance on either a proprietary or particular instance of: operating systems, data management systems, communications systems, and instruction set architectures. The static perspective of the common Ada programming support environment interface set (CAIS) and the portable common execution environment (PCEE) activities are discussed. Also, the dynamic perspective of the PCEE is addressed.
Project WISH: The Emerald City
When Project WISH (Wandering Interplanetary Space Harbor) was initiated as a multi-year project, several design requirements were specified. The space station must have a lifetime of at least 50 years, be autonomous and independent of Earth resources, be capable of traveling throughout the solar system within a maximum flight time of three years, and have a population of 500 to 1000 people. The purpose of the station is to provide a permanent home for space colonists and to serve as a service station for space missions. The orbital mechanics, propulsion system, vehicle dynamics and control, life support system, communication system, power system, and thermal system are discussed.
