Technical Learning and Integration of Interns in Advanced Protection Lab Space: Enhancements to Testbed and Experiments to Improve Workflows for Producing Datasets

This report presents a successful technical learning integration of student interns in the Advanced Protection Laboratory space, located in the Grid Research Integration and Deployment Center (GRID-C) at the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The Advanced Protection Laboratory was created for the primary goal of supporting DOE’s research projects and technical staff at ORNL. As a secondary goal, the space was used for collaborating with ORNL’s intern programs, providing support to the lab’s mentors and student interns. In 2024, three student interns spent a summer in the Advanced Protection lab space and were involved in the DarkNet Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) project. The students had a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience with communication and protective relay equipment focused on information technology, data analytics, and cybersecurity. Experiences in the lab space with real equipment and software integration offer education and professional development for students, which is especially important because of a need in the energy industry to recruit highly skilled power and communication engineers.

Fault Dataset Development for VAV Terminal Units: Damper and Airflow Sensor Faults

This report analyzes field data to understand the impact of faults in variable air volume (VAV) terminal units on building indoor conditions and heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system operations. The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) team conducted field tests at the commercial building test facility known as ORNL’s Flexible Research Platform (FRP) building. Two specific faults-damper malfunctions and airflow sensor inaccuracies- were implemented, as these are common faults in VAV terminal units and can significantly impact HVAC system performance by increasing energy consumption, causing occupant discomfort, and raising operational costs.

Extended Application of State LiDAR Datasets in Locating Orphaned Wells in Appalachian Region

Location inaccuracies in historical and state oil and gas well databases present a major challenge in locating these orphaned wells. To address this, modern scientific methods such as Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), aerial magnetic remote sensing, and digital GIS products have been employed. LiDAR technology uses light to detect surface area changes, providing detailed surface views. This is a workflow to process LiDAR data for use in locating orphaned wells.

Fracture Networks Imaging in CO2 Injection Zones in IBDP Site: An Unsupervised Machine Learning Application with Multiple Datasets

Poster presented at the 17th International Conference on Greenhouse Gas Control Technologies GHGT-17 held in Calgary, Canada, October 20-24, 2024. This poster highlights the integration of unsupervised machine learning (ML) techniques as a transformative tool for advancing understanding of CO2 injection into reservoirs that could potentially contribute to optimizing injection strategies and reservoir management, ultimately bolstering the efficacy and sustainability of CO2 storage.

A Prototype Software to Demonstrate a Data Catalog for Hanford Environmental Datasets

Ensuring that data on long-term environmental remediation at the Hanford Site is high-quality, traceable, and easily accessible is an ongoing challenge, complicated by decades of data collection, multiple contractors maintaining data sources, and the wide range of data types. A centralized data catalog, known as the Hanford Environmental Information and Data Index (HEIDI), has been under development as part of the Hanford Environmental Data Management (HEDM) program to address these challenges. HEIDI fulfills a critical need to bring together a wide range of data types and sizes from multiple authoritative data sources, while documenting the data pedigree and quality information (i.e., traceable to the data source/originator). This document describes additional development and maturation of the HEIDI prototype. Key accomplishments included deploying the catalog software, Esri Geoportal Server, on a server accessible to Hanford Local Area Network users, conducting cybersecurity evaluations, investigating integrated authentication solutions, and conducting functional testing of the catalog prototype. The server-based deployment enabled targeted feedback, leading to enhancements including improved accessibility features and an expanded metadata schema. Specifications for the server-based deployment of the prototype catalog and the HEIDI metadata schema are provided in this document to support subsequent HEIDI deployment by the U.S. Department of Energy Richland Operations Office.

Establishing Data Analysis Pipeline for Bulk ATAC-Seq Datasets

We developed an analysis pipeline for transposase-accessible chromatin sequencing (ATAC-Seq) data derived from bulk samples, which brings together publicly available R packages in addition to command-line tools designed for analysis of bulk ATAC-Seq data and can be run on any computer running a Linux-like operating system such as Ubuntu or Apple OSX.

Data Cards for Standardized Metadata Across DOE-Aligned Data Initiatives: Toward Transparent, Interoperable, and Governed Dataset Documentation

As data-intensive research, advanced computing, and artificial intelligence become increasingly central to scientific and operational workflows, the need for consistent, transparent, and machine-actionable documentation has grown correspondingly. Multiple DOE-aligned communities—including Office of Science, Genesis Mission, American Science Cloud (AmSC), National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) stewardship and governance, and related cross-laboratory collaborations—have independently developed metadata practices to support discovery, access, reuse, repository deposit, and compliance.
