Conceptual design and analysis of a large antenna utilizing electrostatic membrane management

Conceptual designs and associated technologies for deployment 100 m class radiometer antennas were developed. An electrostatically suspended and controlled membrane mirror and the supporting structure are discussed. The integrated spacecraft including STS cargo bay stowage and development were analyzed. An antenna performance evaluation was performed as a measure of the quality of the membrane/spacecraft when used as a radiometer in the 1 GHz to 5 GHz region. Several related LSS structural dynamic models differing by their stiffness property (and therefore, lowest modal frequencies) are reported. Control system whose complexity varies inversely with increasing modal frequency regimes are also reported. Interactive computer-aided-design software is discussed.

Liquid-immersible electrostatic ultrasonic transducer

A broadband megahertz range electrostatic acoustic transducer for use in a liquid environment is described. A liquid tight enclosure includes a metallic conducting membrane as part of its outside surface and has a means inside the liquid tight enclosure for applying a tension to the membrane and for mounting an electrode such that the flat end of the electrode is aproximately parallel to the membrane. The invention includes structure and a method for ensuring that the membrane and the flat end of the electrode are exactly parallel and a fixed predetermined distance from each other.

Calculation and observation of thermal electrostatic noise in solar wind plasma

Calculations, both approximate algebraic and numerical, have been carried out for the noise due to electrostatic waves incident on a dipole antenna. The noise is calculated both for a thermal equilibrium plasma, and one having several components at different temperatures. The results are compared with measurements from the IMP-6 satellite. In various frequency ranges, the noise power is dominated by Langmuir oscillations, by electron acoustic waves and by ion acoustic waves. The measurements are consistent with all of these, although the ion waves are not definitely observed, due to interference from shot noise.

Broadband electrostatic noise and field-aligned currents in Jupiter's middle magnetosphere

Voyager 1 plasma wave observations have revealed the presence of an impulsive electrostatic emission localized to the Jovian middle magnetosphere that appears on the edges of the plasma sheet. This plasma mode has the same spectral and morphological characteristics of an emission that has been extensively studied in the earth's magnetosphere and has been associated with the presence of field-aligned currents. The results of a detailed study of the properties of this Jovian emission are presented by using comparisons with terrestrial observations as a basis for mode identification. The occurrence regions of the waves are compared with the measured magnetic field configuration to establish a correspondence with the plasma sheet. It is argued that this is a quasi-permanent global system of field-aligned currents linking the ionosphere of Jupiter to the middle magnetosphere, which powers energetic plasma heating processes occurring there. On the basis of knowledge of the consequences of field-aligned currents in the terrestrial magnetosphere, a scenario for acceleration/precipitation of inverted V electrons, concomitant aurorae, and energetic (approximately 10 keV) proton deposition into the middle magnetosphere resulting from field-aligned potential drops associated with this current system is suggested.

On the electrostatic charging of the cometary nucleus

The paper demonstrates that a water-dominated cometary nucleus is not shielded from solar UV radiation or solar wind by protective atmospheres beyond a heliocentric distance of 5 AU. It is also shown that submicron dust particles can be electrostatically levitated and blown off the cometary surface. An upper limit on the total mass that can be lost from the sunlit hemisphere is derived using two solar wind models, and the dust mantle erosion is estimated at 5-12 cm. It is noted that the erosion is comparable to the mass of dust blown off a typical medium bright comet by the viscous drag of the sublimating gases during perihelium passage between 3.0 and 0.5 AU, and it is therefore proposed, that the surface dust blow-off be included in the current balance equation.

An electrostatic parabolic density drift instability

Assuming a uniform magnetic field and using the local approximation, the Vlassov theory for an electrostatic instability driven by a parabolic density gradient is considered. It is found that the instability grows only in the case of a sufficiently large, positive second derivative of the density. Linear growth rate parametric dependences are given, in addition to weakly nonlinear calculations on wave-particle transport due to this instability.

Thermal fluctuations and the diffuse electrostatic emissions

The suggestion that the weak-banded electrostatic emissions observed in the magnetosphere at frequencies between the electron gyrofrequency and upper hybrid frequency are thermal fluctuations is quantitatively explored, by means of a hot-cold model for dayside electron distributions with density and temperature ratios much greater than unity. It is determined that, for typical dayside conditions, the observed waves are weakly damper Bernstein-Harris modes whose spectral density and polarization, perpendicular to the ambient magnetic field, can be accounted for by the theory. It is suggested that the formalism developed may be applicable to weak electron cyclotron emissions at Jupiter and Saturn, and can be extended to lower-frequency ion cyclotron fluctuations by modifying the theory to include ion contributions.

Electrostatic dust protection for optical elements

The application of electrostatic technology to the protection of optical components in earth-mounted and satellite orbital systems has been investigated. Theory and experiment indicate it is quite practical to prevent dust deposition in an earth environment. A mathematical analysis indicates even better results should be obtained in an orbital vehicle.

The source of Saturn electrostatic discharges

During both Voyager encounters with the saturnian system, the Planetary Radio Astronomy experiment detected strong discrete episodic bursts of radio emission, termed Saturn electrostatic discharges (SED). An examination of Voyager 2 photopolarimeter data now reveals a narrow feature (possibly a gap) in Saturn's B ring. A single, unique object appears to be responsible for both the SED and this feature.

Electrostatic Levitator With Feedback Control

Sample position automatically maintained. Object levitated by electrostatic field between two electrodes. Because of particular curved electrode shape, levitation field has stable horizontal position on vertical axis of symmetry. Vertical position of object sensed and compared with preset value. When position error is detected, amplitude of levitating field is increased or decreased to restore zero error. System offers options well to containerless processing.

Particle simulations of electrostatic emissions near the lower hybrid frequency

The linear instability and nonlinear saturation of electrostatic emission near the lower hybrid frequency is examined for model cold and warm ion ring distributions and auroral zone parameters. In the cold ring case, a single coherent mode near omega (LH) evolves, and saturates by ion trapping. In the warm ring case, a discrete spectrum of unstable modes separated by the ion gyrofrequency is generated near and above omega (LH). The latter instability saturates by quasilinear diffusion.

Collisionless electrostatic interchange instabilities

The linear Vlasov dispersion equation for electrostatic plasma instabilities driven by gravity and weak density gradients perpendicular to a uniform magnetic field is derived and solved numerically. Two interchange instabilities emerge: the well-known fluid mode at long wavelengths and a kinetic model at wavelengths short compared with the ion gyroradius. The properties of both instabilities are studied, as well as the effects of gravity on the universal and lower-hybrid density drift instabilities. The results show that the kinetic interchange generally has a larger growth rate than the fluid interchange instability, indicating that, whenever the latter is present in a collisionless plasma, the former may also be found.

Ion-beam-driven electrostatic ion cyclotron instabilities

Results are presented of a particle simulation study of the electrostatic ion-cyclotron (EIC) instability driven by a parallel ion beam. The results of this simulation study demonstrate the nonlinear consequences of nonresonant EIC waves destabilized by an ion beam parallel to the magnetic field for the case of a large beam velocity. As a consequence of the instability, it is shown that the beam ions are heated strongly in the perpendicular direction and suffer a strong anomalous friction via EIC waves which leads to the beam slowing down. Simulation results indicate that the anomalous slowing down of beam ions by EIC waves is much larger than that from the classical electron-drag, and the perpendicular collision frequency measured from perpendicular beam heating is as large as that from Bohm diffusion. It is concluded that the ion beam driven EIC wave is a viable mechanism for the transfer of ion parallel beam energy to the ion perpendicular energy.

Preferential perpendicular acceleration of heavy ionospheric ions by interactions with electrostatic hydrogen cyclotron waves

Observations in recent years indicate the presence of energetic ions of ionospheric origin in various parts of the magnetosphere. These energetic ions have been found at all latitudes. Observations from the S3-3 satellite have made a great contribution toward an understanding of the energization of ionospheric ions. One of the most interesting observations is related to the finding that ion beams and electrostatic hydrogen cyclotron (EHC) waves are highly correlated and that they show an abrupt increase in their occurrence rate at an altitude of about 5000 km. A statistical survey of upward flowing ion (UFI) events occurring between 6000 and 8000 km has shown that the average energy of O(+) has a strong correlation with that of the H(+) ions. The present investigation has the objective to examine critically the energetics of UFI events in view of the theory of the interaction of a single coherent EHC wave with O(+), He(+), and H(+) ions. It is found that preferential acceleration of heavy ions occurs when such ions interact with an EHC wave.
