A PWM transistor inverter for an ac electric vehicle drive

A prototype system consisting of closely integrated motor, inverter, and transaxle has been built in order to demonstrate the feasibility of a three-phase ac transistorized inverter for electric vehicle applications. The microprocessor-controlled inverter employs monolithic power transistors to drive an oil-cooled, three-phase induction traction motor at a peak output power of 30 kW from a 144 V battery pack. Transistor safe switching requirements are discussed, and a circuit is presented for recovering trapped snubber inductor energy at transistor turn-off.

Wide field of view laser beacon system for three-dimensional aircraft position measurement

This paper presents a new wide field of view laser beacon system for measurement, in three dimensions, of aircraft or other remote objects. The system is developed for aircraft collision hazard warning independent of ground-based hardware, as well as for flight research, helicopter-assisted construction and rescue, and robotic manipulation applications. Accurate information describing the relative range, elevation, and azimuth of the aircraft are generated by the sweep of a low-power fan-shaped rotating laser beacon past an array of optical detectors. The system achieves a wide angle of acceptance of laser beacon light through use of compound parabolic concentrators, which collimate the light for spectral filtering to minimize solar interference. An on-board microprocessor system converts the pulse sequence to aircraft position in real time. System reliability and performance are enhanced through narrow pass filtering of the pulse signals, digital logic design to mask spurious signals, and adaptive modulation of trigger threshold levels.

RAMP - A fault tolerant distributed microcomputer structure for aircraft navigation and control

Design methodologies for realizing future high authority autoflight control systems are being investigated, taking into account also the study of distributed microcomputer architectures. Attention is given to the redundant asynchronous microprocessor (RAMP) structure. RAMP comprises a connected network of microcomputers which has as input command and sensor information, and which generates servo information to drive actuators, and thrust linkages. Tolerance to hardware failures is achieved by static redundancy. Results of a failed microcomputer are simply rejected. This is done in lieu of dynamic redundancy wherein the distributed computer system performs real time fault detection and reconfiguration of the system. Attention is given to the RAMP network structure and operation, flight control with parallel asynchronous computers, and intermittent fault tolerance.

Evaluation of the Seasat altimeter time tag bias

Two methods were used in analyses of Seasat altimeter data, aimed at the corroboration of an inherent altimeter microprocessor delay compensation value of -79.4 msec, which benefited from a global data distribution in the oceanic areas: (1) the crossover method, using altimeter data differenced at points where the Seasat ground track intersected with itself, and (2) the direct use of the altimeter data. Because the former method is independent of errors in the geoid model, it is considered the more reliable. For all crossover method results, the adopted value of -79.4 msec is within the bounds of the standard deviation associated with the estimates, of which -78.1 + or - 2.0 msec is considered the best representative.

Cloud top remote sensing by airborne lidar

Observations of cloud top height, backscattering, and signal depolarization have been obtained by a lidar system operating onboard a high-altitude research aircraft. The transmitter for the cloud lidar system is a doubled Nd:YAG laser operating at 5 Hz. The system functions as a fully automated sensor under microprocessor control and operates from a nominal 19-km altitude. Measurements have been acquired over a wide variety of cloud cover in conjunction with passive visible and infrared measurements. Initial observation results are reported

The containment set approach to upsets in digital systems

An approach to the fault analysis of digital systems is proposed which combines faults, hardware, and software into one overall model. The model is useful for the consideration of intermittent/transient faults, and supports a new method, based on the concept of a containment set, for realizing transient fault tolerance without massive redundancy. The model also serves as the basis for a new approach to system fault tolerance evaluation and validation using a transition matrix defined in terms of the containment set. The application of upset theory to the design of transient fault-tolerant microprocessor controllers is discussed.

A simple, low cost application of a flight test parameter identification system

The flight test system combines state-of-the-art microprocessor technology and high accuracy instrumentation with parameter identification technology which minimize data and flight time requirements. The system was designed to avoid permanent modifications of the test airplane and allow quick installation. It is capable of longitudinal and lateral-directional stability and control derivative estimation. This paper presents details of this system, calibration and flight test procedures, and the results of the Cessna 172 flight test program. The system has proven easy to install, simple to operate, and capable of accurate estimation of stability and control parameters in the Cessna 172 flight tests.

Flight test evaluation of a video tracker for enhanced offshore airborne radar approach capability

As a part of NASA's Rotorcraft All-Weather Operations Research Program, advanced airborne radar approach (ARA) concepts are being investigated. Since data from previous NASA/FAA flight tests showed significant ARA limitations, a research program was initiated at NASA Ames Research Center to determine the benefit that could be derived by automating certain radar functions and superimposing course display data on the radar display. To evaluate these concepts, a newly developed video tracking system which interfaces with weather radar was acquired. After the pilot designates a destination target, the system tracks the target video as it moves on the radar indicator. Using a small, efficient microprocessor, the autotracker presents valuable approach data on the radar screen and automatically adjusts the radar gain and tilt. Results of a limited flight test evaluation of the autotracker show that the course display concept, combined with automated gain and tilt functions, is effective for improving ARA's and reducing radar operator workload.

Laser velocimeter stand-alone controller

A distributed microprocessor network has been developed to position a laser-based velocity measurement package. Designed primarily for use inside the Ames 40 x 80-foot Subsonic Wind Tunnel, the instrument assembly is remotely operated. The mechanical system is reconfigurable for other test environments which necessitates an adaptive control approach. Three stepper motor drives provide two-dimensional positioning of the sampling point over 200/sq m of the test section, with a 5-mm resolution. Real-time multiprocessing provides fast response, fault detection, and parametric data acquisition. Manual tests are run from a dedicated control panel and automated tests are accomplished via an I.E.E.E 488 interface. The design approach and the progress to date are discussed.

Theory and implementation of a fast algorithm linear equalizer

The theory and implementation of a multiplication-free linear mean-square error criterion equalizer for data transmission are considered. For many real-time signal processing situations, a large number of multiplications is objectionable. The linear estimation problem on a binary computer is considered where the estimation parameters are constrained to be powers of two and thus all multiplications are replaced by shifts. The optimal solution is obtained from an integer-programming-like problem except that the allowable discrete points are non-integers. The branch-and-bound algorithm is used to obtain the coefficients of the equalization TDL. Specific experimental performance results are given for an equalizer implemented with a 12 bit A/D device and a 8080 microprocessor.

The Ruggedized STD Bus Microcomputer - A low cost computer suitable for Space Shuttle experiments

Previous space flight computers have been costly in terms of both hardware and software. The Ruggedized STD Bus Microcomputer is based on the commercial Mostek/Pro-Log STD Bus. Ruggedized PC cards can be based on commercial cards from more than 60 manufacturers, reducing hardware cost and design time. Software costs are minimized by using standard 8-bit microprocessors and by debugging code using commercial versions of the ruggedized flight boards while the flight hardware is being fabricated.
