Network Models of Active Degradation Mechanisms and Pathways for Service Life Prediction of Indoor and Outdoor PV Modules

ct: PV service lifetime prediction (SLP) enables accurate calculation of levelized cost of energy (LCOE), which is crucial to rationalizing PV investment and installation. However, SLP is challeging since PV reliability in the field is affected by many combined factors, including various environmental stresses and module quality. In order to map out the active degradation mechanisms and pathways that best resemble real world conditions, we introduce the framework of a study protocol and use network models fitted to data, to enable analysis and SLP of complex PV systems with multiple active degradation mechanisms. The study protocol is the experimental design, including module variants and different exposure conditions, selection of evaluation methods, time-series data acquisition and training of network models to these data. We present SLP of minimodules in the lab and PV systems in the field. For lab SLP, minimodules with 8 variants based on manufacturer, architecture, and encapsulation were prepared and aged in modified damp heat with or without full spectrum light exposure. Stepwise I-V and Suns-Voc data acquisition tracks changes in electrical properties including Rs,IV, Isc,IV, Vmp,PIV providing insights into power loss of minimodules. Network structural equation modeling (netSEM) was utilized to construct degradation pathway models that identify active degradation mechanisms and predict power loss over time. For field SLP, datastreams of Pmp values and I-V curve datastreams of two types of modules installed in three distinctly different Köppen-Geiger climate zones for 9 years were acquired. With power loss modes corresponding to uniform current loss (ΔPIsc), recombination (ΔPVoc), series resistance (ΔPRs), and current mismatch (ΔPImis) determined, the performance loss rates (PLR) were determined using PVplr. We show how to establish a study protocol framework to ensure appropriate parametric variations and valid data collection from the variants of your complex systems. Then the data-driven netSEM model fitting provides a comprehensive mapping of multiple active degradation mechanisms, and accurate service life prediction.

Life-Cycle Inventory of Critical Materials: Nickel, Copper, Titanium, and Rare-Earth Elements

The United States has developed a list of critical minerals/materials whose sustained and reliable supply is pivotal to the robust functioning of critical industrial sectors. A key concern with these minerals is their environmental effects as a function of their production location. This requires material and energy flow details for their processing steps. This report provides a life-cycle inventory (LCI) for producing four critical minerals and/or material systems (nickel, copper, titanium, and rare-earth elements) incorporated in the updated GREET® (Greenhouse gases, Regulated Emissions, and Energy use in Technologies) model. For these systems, we provide an LCI as a function of production location – domestic (within the United States) and international (geographies from where the US imports these minerals). Our LCI also considers variations in ore grades for nickel and copper. This report also provides an LCI for all intermediate materials used to produce these critical materials.

Developing an In-situ Formed Dynamic Protection Layer to Mitigate Lithium Interface Shifting: Preventing Dendrite Formation on Metallic Lithium Surface to Facilitate Long Cycle Life of Lithium Solid-State Batteries

After extensive research on various system, a fully lithiated Si anode material (Li 3.75 Si) was synthesized. The high energy density, long cycle life anode demonstrated no apparent dendrite growth in an all-solid-state Li battery. A flexible solid-state electrolyte film with a thickness less than 50 μm was developed. All-solid-state Li full batteries were built and tested with NMC811, organic, organosulfide and sulfur cathode. Energy density of 1140 Wh/Kg at material level and 376 Wh/Kg at electrode level were demonstrated for over 500 cycles and with no apparent dendrite formation on the Li anode.

Characterization and Accelerated Life Testing of a New Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell

The project aims to develop mechanistic degradation models that realistically predict long-term Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell (SOEC) durability, using input data from accelerated electrochemical life testing combined with quantitative microstructural and microchemical evaluation. A promising SOEC type will be further developed. The understanding achieved by combining experimental results and theory will be used to guide improvements in long-term SOEC durability, and validate that this technology can reach DOE H 2 production cost and durability targets. Planned outcomes include: (1) new experimental accelerated testing data on SOEC degradation at the oxygen electrode, fuel electrode, and electrolyte; (2) predictive theory of degradation developed based on the accelerated test data; (3) new electrode materials and processing methods that minimize degradation rate; (4) determination of the impact of SOEC electrolyte thickness and electrode composition/microstructure on performance and degradation; (5) determination of the operating conditions where degradation is minimized; and (6) validation of degradation models for extrapolating accelerated test data to predict long-term durability.

Modeling of High Solids Biomass Liquefaction, Techno-economic Assessment and Life Cycle Assessment for Industrial Scale UP

Biomass liquefaction improves corn-stover slurry transport within a biorefinery, and reduces challenges associated with solids handling. Slurries, formed with yield stresses (i.e., viscosities) that are low enough to facilitate pumping from one unit operation to the next, and that enable mixing at reasonable power inputs in large fermentation vessels, enable scaling of cellulose fermentations. Three liquefaction methods: enzyme, enzyme mimetic, and a hybrid approach were analyzed by a combination of techno-economic and life-cycle analyses, resulting in an assessment of cost-effectiveness and environmental impact. Of the three scenarios, enzyme-based processes emerged as the most efficient, both in cost and emissions reduction (gCO2-equivalent/kg slurry).

Silicon-Based Anodes for Long-Cycle-Life Lithium-ion Batteries

CVD process has been studied and optimized to achieve 2x scale up of porous Si anode materials with a clean process. The roles of CVD temperature, duration, C 2 H 2 gas pressure, and carrier gas have been optimized. It is found that LHCE (LHCE-1 and LHCE-4) can lead to more than 50% increase in the cycling stability of Si||NMC622 cells. LHCE-4 can also lead to smaller impedance increase and longer calendar life when tested in single layer pouch cells. These results are very helpful in the understanding of the Si based anode and further development of Si based Li ion batteries.

Statistical Framework for Planning a Shelf Life Program with Binary Performance Data

This document outlines a statistical framework for establishing a shelf-life program for components whose performance is measured by a binary response, usually ‘pass’ or ‘fail.’ The approach applies to both single measurement devices and repeated measurement devices. The high-level objective of these plans is to quickly detect any sizeable increase in fraction defective as the product ages. The statistical approach is to choose a sample size and monitoring technique that alarms when the fraction defective increases to an unacceptably high level, but does not alarm when the process is at nominal. The nominal (acceptable) fraction defective is used, and an increased fraction defective (unacceptable) is assumed as part of the control chart design. The control chart recommended for this problem is the Bernoulli Cumulative Sum (CUSUM) control chart.
