On the selection of an optimum design point for phase-coherent receivers employing band-pass limiters.

Discussion of the optimum power allocation problem associated with the design of a phase-coherent receiver employing a bandpass limiter. A single channel system is treated in detail, and an optimization technique is proposed that makes use of up-to-date phase-locked loop and bandpass limiter theories recently contributed by Lindsey (1969) and Springett and Simon (1971). It is shown how this technique can be extended to a two-channel system.

A versatile pulse programmer for pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

A digital pulse programmer producing the standard pulse sequences required for pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy is described. In addition, a 'saturation burst' sequence, useful in the measurement of long relaxation times in solids, is provided. Both positive and negative 4 V trigger pulses are produced that are fully synchronous with a crystal-controlled time base, and the pulse programmer may be phase-locked with a maximum pulse jitter of 3 ns to the oscillator of a coherent pulse spectrometer. Medium speed TTL integrated circuits are used throughout.

Data-aided carrier tracking loops

Power in composite signal sidebands is used to enhance signal-to-noise ratio in carrier tracking loop, thereby reducing radio loss and decreasing probability of receiver error. By adding quadrature channel to phase-lock-loop detector circuit of receiver, dc component can be fed back into carrier tracking loop.

Multichannel telemetry system

A two-channel telemetry system is described in which one channel is used for high-rate data and the other channel for low-rate data communication. In the transmitter a signal, which subsequently phase modulates a carrier, is produced which is a function of at least the high-rate data, the low-rate data and the frequency of the subcarrier of the low-rate channel. In the receiver which includes a phase-locked loop, the high-rate data is detected off the receiver inphase channel output and the low-rate off the quadrature channel output.

Digital receiver study and implementation

Computer software was developed which makes it possible to use any general purpose computer with A/D conversion capability as a PSK receiver for low data rate telemetry processing. Carrier tracking, bit synchronization, and matched filter detection are all performed digitally. To aid in the implementation of optimum computer processors, a study of general digital processing techniques was performed which emphasized various techniques for digitizing general analog systems. In particular, the phase-locked loop was extensively analyzed as a typical non-linear communication element. Bayesian estimation techniques for PSK demodulation were studied. A hardware implementation of the digital Costas loop was developed.

Data acquisition and editing for the celestial mechanics experiment

A radio tracking subsystem is reported in which the critical elements are the frequency standard and its distribution subsystem, as they ultimately limit the accuracy of both range and Doppler measurements. A rubidium vapor standard serves as the primary reference. After frequency multiplication to S-band and additional amplification, the carrier is transmitted to the spacecraft where a phase-locked receiver-transmitter system filters the signal, introduces a slight frequency shift, and retransmits it to the ground. Doppler is measured by comparing the received frequency with that being transmitted.

Design of communication systems using short-constraint-length convolutional codes.

A method is presented for calculating the effect of carrier-phase reference error in a receiver phase-locked loop on bit error rates in convolutionally coded data, for the practical design of systems using short-constraint-length convolutional codes. A set of design curves shows the relation between design bit error rate, uplink carrier tracking loop SNR, downlink total SNR, and downlink modulation index. These curves make possible rapid and simple system optimization.

Improvements in deep-space tracking by use of third-order loops.

Third-order phase-locked receivers have not yet found wide application in deep-space communications systems because the second-order systems now used have performed adequately on past spacecraft missions. However, a survey of the doppler profiles for future missions shows that an unaided second-order loop may be unable to perform within reasonable error bounds. This article discusses the characteristics of a simple third-order extension to present second-order systems that not only extends doppler-tracking capability, but widens the pull-in range and decreases pull-in time as well.

Video-signal improvement using comb filtering techniques.

Significant improvement in the signal-to-noise performance of television signals has been obtained through the application of comb filtering techniques. This improvement is achieved by removing the inherent redundancy in the television signal through linear prediction and by utilizing the unique noise-rejection characteristics of the receiver comb filter. Theoretical and experimental results describe the signal-to-noise ratio and picture-quality improvement obtained through the use of baseband comb filters and the implementation of a comb network as the loop filter in a phase-lock-loop demodulator. Attention is given to the fact that noise becomes correlated when processed by the receiver comb filter.

Power flow for Josephson elements.

General relations are presented for the power flow at the frequencies of interest in a Josephson element. These general power flow relations depend upon whether the autonomous frequency is phase-locked, either harmonically or subharmonically, to a frequency in the system or is unlocked. The results presented generalize those given previously by Russer (1971) for the harmonically locked case.

Optimal space communications techniques

The design, development, and analysis are reported of a digital phase-locked loop (DPLL) for FM demodulation and threshold extension. One of the features of the developed DPLL is its synchronous, real time operation. The sampling frequency is constant and all the required arithmetic and logic operations are performed within one sampling period, generating an output sequence which is converted to analog form and filtered. An equation relating the sampling frequency to the carrier frequency must be satisfied to guarantee proper DPLL operation. The synchronous operation enables a time-shared operation of one DPLL to demodulate several FM signals simultaneously. In order to obtain information about the DPLL performance at low input signal-to-noise ratios, a model of an input noise spike was introduced, and the DPLL equation was solved using a digital computer. The spike model was successful in finding a second order DPLL which yielded a five db threshold extension beyond that of a first order DPLL.

Modulator for tone and binary signals

Tones and binary information are transmitted as phase variations on a carrier wave of constant amplitude and frequency. The carrier and tones are applied to a balanced modulator for deriving an output signal including a pair of sidebands relative to the carrier. The carrier is phase modulated by a digital signal so that it is + or - 90 deg out of phase with the predetermined phase of the carrier. The carrier is combined in an algebraic summing device with the phase modulated signal and the balanced modulator output signal. The output of the algebraic summing device is hard limited to derive a constant amplitude and frequency signal having very narrow bandwidth requirements. At a receiver, the tones and binary data are detected with a phase locked loop having a voltage controlled oscillator driving a pair of orthogonal detection channels.

Optimal space communication techniques

Encoding of video signals using adaptive delta modulation (DM) was investigated, along with the error correction of DM encoded signals corrupted by thermal noise. Conversion from pulse code modulation to delta modulation was studied; an expression for the signal to noise ratio of the DM signal derived was achieved by employing linear, 2-sample, interpolation between sample points. A phase locked loop using a nonlinear processor in lieu of a loop filter is discussed.

One way Doppler Extractor. Volume 2: Digital VCO technique

A feasibility analysis and trade-offs for a one-way Doppler extractor using digital VCO techniques is presented. The method of Doppler measurement involves the use of a digital phase lock loop; once this loop is locked to the incoming signal, the precise frequency and hence the Doppler component can be determined directly from the contents of the digital control register. The only serious error source is due to internally generated noise. Techniques are presented for minimizing this error source and achieving an accuracy of 0.01 Hz in a one second averaging period. A number of digitally controlled oscillators were analyzed from a performance and complexity point of view. The most promising technique uses an arithmetic synthesizer as a digital waveform generator.
