Fuel Design and Fabrication: TRISO Particle Fuel

Tristructural-isotropic (TRISO) particle fuel is an advanced, mature technology for nuclear energy generation. Inherent containment of radionuclides within the fuel obviates the need for expensive reactor containment buildings; however, this benefit comes at the cost of increased complexity in fabrication relative to other nuclear fuel forms. In addition, rigorous fuel characterization and quality control efforts are required to ensure that the credited radionuclide containment within the fuel is realized.

Fabrication of Poly-Si on Locally Etched SiOx as Passivating Contacts for c-Si Solar Cells

Proof-of-concept for polysilicon on locally etched oxide (PLEO) contacts. Room temperature approach (via MACE) to engineer pinholes decouples charge-carrier transport across contact from passivation scheme of choice. 19 and 17% PLEO devices fabricated on double-side textured and saw-damage etched n Cz wafers, respectively. Preliminary work on polysilicon on locally etched nitride/oxide (PLENO) contacts. 0.2 fA/cm2 achieved with p PLENO; contact displays Ohmic behavior but still very resistive due to low pinhole density.

Nanofiber electrodes, fabricating methods and applications of same

Nanofiber electrodes for electrochemical devices and fabricating methods of the same are disclosed. In one embodiment, the method includes forming a liquid mixture containing a catalyst, a first polymer of perfluoro sulfonic acid and a second polymer of polyethylene oxide, the first polymer of perfluoro sulfonic acid being pre-treated to remove protons in the first polymer by exchange with a cation species like Na+; and electro spinning the liquid mixture to generate electro spun fibers and deposit the generated fibers on a collector substrate to form a fiber electrode mat comprising a network of fibers, where each fiber has a plurality of particles of the catalyst distributed thereon.

Fabricating structured particles through rapid hardening and tailored collection methods

Fabrication of functional polymer-based particles by crosslinking UV-curable polymer drops in mid-air and collecting crosslinked particles in a solid container, a liquid suspension, or an air flow. The particles can contain different phases in the form or layered structures that contain one to multiple cores, or structures that are blended with dissolved or emulsified smaller domains. A curing system produces ultraviolet rays that are directed onto the particles in the jet stream from one side. A reflector positioned on other side of the jet stream reflects the ultraviolet rays back onto the particles in the jet stream.

Methods of fabricating vacuum housings with hermetic solder seals using capillary solder wicks

Hermetically sealed electronic devices and methods for fabricating the hermetically sealed electronic devices are provided. The devices include a solder sealed vacuum housing. The solder seal is formed using a solder wick having an external solder reservoir. When the reservoir is filled with molten solder, the solder is drawn via capillary action into a precisely defined narrow gap between two components of the housing where it forms an airtight and vacuum-tight seal.

Effects of Build Orientation and Heat Treatment on Neutron Irradiation Hardening in Inconel 625 Fabricated via Laser Powder Bed Fusion

Various Inconel 625 coupons fabricated via Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) were neutron irradiated using the inside reflector of the reactor at the University of Missouri Research Reactor (MURR). Effects of build orientation and heat treatment on neutron-induced hardening were investigated by inspecting L-PBF samples built vertically or at a 45º angle in the following heat-treated conditions: as-built (no heat treatment), 700 ºC for 1 hour, 900 ºC for 1 hour, and 1050 ºC for 1 hour. The microhardness results of L-PBF samples before and after neutron irradiation were compared with traditional wrought Inconel 625. All samples underwent an irradiation flux of 6.61 x 1013 neutrons/cm²/s for 310 hours for an estimated damage of 0.012 dpa. Results indicate that as-built L-PBF specimens are less prone to radiation hardening relative to their wrought counterparts. As-printed diagonal specimens were shown to harden by 8% as compared to 1.2% hardening in as-printed vertical specimens.

Rigid stiffener-reinforced flexible neural probes, and methods of fabrication using wicking channel-distributed adhesives and tissue insertion and extraction

A stiffener-reinforced microelectrode array probe and fabrication method using wicking channel-distributed adhesives which temporarily adheres a flexible device onto a rigid stiffener for insertion and extraction. Assembly is by dispensing a liquid adhesive into a narrow open groove wicking channel formed on the stiffener so that the adhesive is wicked along and fills the channel by capillary action, and adhering the adhesive-filled bonding side of the elongated section of the rigid substrate to a flexible device.

Fabrication of a Monolithic 5-Meter Aluminum Reflector for Millimeter-Wavelength Observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background

We have demonstrated the fabrication of a monolithic, 5-meter diameter, aluminum reflector with 17.4 $\mu$m RMS surface error. The reflector was designed to avoid the problem of pickup due to scattering from panel gaps in a large, millimeter-wavelength telescope that will be used for measurements on the cosmic microwave background.

Creep behavior of $\gamma$-TiAl fabricated via electron beam additive manufacturing

$\gamma$-TiAl is a desirable structural engineering alloy with excellent high temperature specific strength. This material system has been shown to be processable at industrial scales via additive manufacturing. In this work we investigate the microstructure and properties of Ti48Al2Cr2Nb fabricated via electron beam melting. No significant anisotropy was observed from during creep testing under the considered conditions. Creep deformation resistance and rupture strength are comparable to material synthesized via traditional routes.

Method for fabrication of sleeveless photonic crystal canes with an arbitrary shape

The fabrication of sleeveless canes utilizes a preform with an array of glass canes in the preform. At least one tube-sleeve encircles the array of glass canes and is secured to the array of glass canes. The array of glass canes is moved into a furnace wherein the array of glass canes is heated. The furnace is maintained at a furnace temperature within the range of 2000° C. to 1700° C. and the array of glass canes is drawn from the furnace. The drawing of the array of glass canes both scales down the glass canes and elongates the glass canes. Maintaining the furnace at a furnace temperature within the range of 2000° C. to 1700° C. assures that the array of glass canes and the glass canes maintain their original shape.
