Multiplexed binary assembly and quantitative tracking of bacterial populations

Compositions and methods for tracking combinations of mutations in populations by coupling DNA assembly and paired-end sequencing technology with high-throughput sequencing. This allows for an unlimited number of mutation sites in a population of microorganisms to be identified, and allows sites to be sequenced across several replicates. Unique identifiers (DNA barcodes) can be used to measure fitness data by sequencing of the barcodes multiplexed with the mutation sites with high-throughput short sequencing read technology, allowing selections to be rapidly performed on populations of known combinatorial genotypes.

Deep learning for lipid droplet recognition in quantitative phase images

This library of Python code is used for performing semantic segmentation of images using 6 different machine learning methods. Five of the methods are implemented entirely within the scikit-learn framework. The Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) method requires Keras with a TensorFlow backend and generally uses a different set of scripts in order to perform the complete training and evaluation.

High-efficiency transmission-mode diamond scintillator for quantitative characterization of X-ray beams

The luminance of a transmission mode X-ray scintillator diamond plate is dominated by induced defect centers having an excited state lifetime less than 10 msec, and in embodiments less than 1 msec, 100 usec, 10 used, 1 used, 100 nsec, or even 50 nsec, thereby providing enhanced X-ray luminance response and an X-ray flux dynamic range that is linear with X-ray flux on a log-log scale over at least three orders of magnitude. The diamond plate can be a single crystal having a dislocation density of less than 104 per square centimeter, and having surfaces that are ion milled instead of mechanically polished. The defect centers can be SiV centers induced by silicon doping during CVD diamond formation, and/or NV0 centers formed by nitrogen doping followed by applying electron beam irradiation of the diamond plate and annealing.

Critical Literature Review of Quantitative Sustainability Assessment Methods for the Circular Economy

The circular economy (CE) has been proposed to be an operational framework for sustainable development that decouples economic growth from resource consumption. The CE ambition is to maximize the retention of value in products, materials, and resources in the economy over time with the help of CE strategies such as selling a service rather than a product, reusing and repairing products or their components, and recycling. The social, economic, and environmental performances of CE strategies need to be measured against their linear counterparts to avoid strategies that increase circularity but have other unintended externalities. However, there is currently no tool specifically designed to compare circular to linear systems and, thus, various methods from different fields have been applied. This session aims at reviewing, contrasting, and critiquing different methods that have been applied to assess the CE until now, along with an up to date state of the science in this field. Methods from the industrial ecology field have most often been applied to study the CE. However, the transition to CE involves both technological improvements as well as social changes. New business models such as collaborative consumption models (e.g., Uber or Airbnb) are examples of the new patterns of production and consumption of the CE, which may be difficult to analyze from a purely industrial ecology perspective. Methods from complexity science and humanities could therefore complement the industrial ecology perspective to extend the scope of the analysis. Such an approach could also answer a longstanding criticism of the CE which, in contrast with sustainability, solely focuses on the environment and the economy. Moreover, the hybridization of two or more existing methods can yield additional capabilities, which may enable the exploration of additional CE-related research questions. The 90 minutes session will have several presentations and conclude with a moderated, interactive panel discussion on how methods from different fields could be combined to harness their relative strengths.

Quantitative description and correction of longitudinal drifts in the Fermilab linac

The Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) Linac accepts 750 keV H- ions from the front end and accelerates them to 400 MeV for injection into the Booster rapid cycling synchrotron. Day-to-day drifts in the beam longitudinal trajectory during regular operation are of the order of several degrees. They are believed to cause additional losses in both the Linac and the Booster and are addressed by empirically adjusting cavity phases of front end and Linac RF cavities. This work explores a scheme for expressing these drifts in terms of phase shifts in the low-energy part of the Linac. Such a description allows for a simplified visual representation of the drifts, suggests a clear algorithm for their compensation, and provides a tool for estimating efficiency of such compensation.

Quantitative Insight to Fission Gas Bubble Distribution in Irradiated Annular U-10Zr Metallic Fuel Using Deep Learning

U-10Zr Metal fuel is a promising nuclear fuel candidate for next-generation sodium-cooled fast spectrum reactors. Porosity is one of the key facts to impact the performance of metallic fuel. Additionally, a mechanical understanding of fission gas bubbles evolution behavior is a prerequisite for fuel development and qualification. Previous study of fission gas bubbles relied on a simple threshold method working on low resolution optical microscopy images, which has challenges in recognizing bubble boundaries, and caused inaccurate statistics of bubble properties. In this paper, a pre-trained deep learning model on Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images from an annular U-10Zr fuel (AF1), was applied to another U-10Zr annular fuel (AF2). More accurate fission gas bubble segmentation results were generated, which leads to more precise qualitative analysis on the morphology, size, density, and orientation of bubbles. Furthermore, we investigated the lanthanide movement along the radial temperature gradient and obtained conclusive findings.
