Detection of visible-wavelength aurora on Mars

Mars hosts various auroral processes despite the planet’s tenuous atmosphere and lack of a global magnetic field. To date, all aurora observations have been at ultraviolet wavelengths from orbit. We describe the discovery of green visible-wavelength aurora, originating from the atomic oxygen line at 557.7 nanometers, detected with the SuperCam and Mastcam-Z instruments on the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover. Near–real-time simulations of a Mars-directed coronal mass ejection (CME) provided sufficient lead-time to schedule an observation with the rover. The emission was observed 3 days after the CME eruption, suggesting that the aurora was induced by particles accelerated by the moving shock front. To our knowledge, detection of aurora from a planetary surface other than Earth has never been reported, nor has visible aurora been observed at Mars. This detection demonstrates that auroral forecasting at Mars is possible, and that during events with higher particle precipitation, or under less dusty atmospheric conditions, aurorae will be visible to future astronauts.

Digital Twin Based Condition Monitoring of LCC-LCC Inductive Power Transfer Systems

Inductive power transfer (IPT) systems provide a flexible, hands-free charging opportunity to electric vehicles (EV). The resonant network components and the transmitter and receiver coils are often subjected to high voltages or currents. Component aging in the compensation network and coils of resonant IPT systems is detrimental to the reliability and power transfer efficiency of the IPT system. Monitoring the component health of such multi-element complex systems requires robust optimization algorithms. This paper discusses condition monitoring of a resonant IPT system for an EV charger using a digital twin model. A hybrid estimation algorithm based on genetic algorithms and adaptive particle swarm optimization is developed to estimate the parameters of the digital twin model. Simulation results are used to verify the monitoring capabilities of the developed algorithm under various operating conditions of the IPT system.

Fast, Nondestructive and Precise Biomass Measurements Are Possible Using Lidar-Based Convex Hull and Voxelization Algorithms

Light detection and ranging (lidar) scanning tools are available that can make rapid digital estimations of biomass. Voxelization and convex hull are two algorithms used to calculate the volume of the scanned plant canopy, which is correlated with biomass, often the primary trait of interest. Voxelization splits the scans into regular-sized cubes, or voxels, whereas the convex hull algorithm creates a polygon mesh around the outermost points of the point cloud and calculates the volume within that mesh. In this study, digital estimates of biomass were correlated against hand-harvested biomass for field-grown corn, broom corn, and energy sorghum. Voxelization (r = 0.92) and convex hull (r = 0.95) both correlated well with plant dry biomass. Lidar data were also collected in a large breeding trial with nearly 900 genotypes of energy sorghum. In contrast to the manual harvest studies, digital biomass estimations correlated poorly with yield collected from a forage harvester for both voxel count (r = 0.32) and convex hull volume (r = 0.39). However, further analysis showed that the coefficient of variation (CV, a measure of variability) for harvester-based estimates of biomass was greater than the CV of the voxel and convex-hull-based biomass estimates, indicating that poor correlation was due to harvester imprecision, not digital estimations. Overall, results indicate that the lidar-based digital biomass estimates presented here are comparable or more precise than current approaches.

Development of an Amine Oxide Polyzwitterion Brush Martini Model with Polarizable Water and Ions

Abstract In order to accurately simulate the fouling process of proteins onto polyzwitterion brushes, models that accurately capture the hydration properties and chain conformations of such brushes must first be established. We developed a Martini coarse-grained (CG) model for amine oxide polyzwitterion (PNOMA) brushes, a promising class of antifouling materials, in polarizable water and ions by fitting to all-atom bond and angle distributions, monomer hydration free energy, monomer–monomer distance potential of mean force (PMF), and monomer–salt radial distribution functions (RDFs). Martini 2.2P was selected for compatibility with the established polarizable water and ion models. For comparison with PNOMA, we also constructed models for conventional sulfobetaine (PSBMA) and phosphorylcholine (PMPC) polyzwitterions and the polycation PMETAC using established nonbonded bead types from the literature and refitting bond and angle potentials. We simulated each polymer brush chemistry for varying grafting density and chain length, validating brush height scaling relations against experimental data. The CG models captured the relative hydration strengths among different polyzwitterion chemistries, and brush heights extrapolated to higher molecular weights are in agreement with experimental ellipsometry data. We find that chain swelling of the superhydrophilic PNOMA brushes lies between that of the traditional polyzwitterions PSBMA/PMPC and the polycation PMETAC. For PNOMA brushes in NaCl solution, simulated brush height decreases with salt concentration due to the selectively strong interactions between amine oxide and sodium ions.

First-principles DFT modeling of nitrobenzene adsorption on the Ag(111) surface at varying monolayer coverages

Here, the adsorption behavior of nitrobenzene on the Ag(111) surface as a function of coverage is investigated using density functional theory. Adsorption energies and optimized geometries are analyzed together with isolated intermolecular interaction calculations and electronic structure analysis, including Bader charge partitioning and projected density of states, to disentangle the roles of adsorbate–surface bonding and through-space adsorbate–adsorbate interactions. At low and intermediate coverages (θ = 1/9 and θ = 2/9), bidentate adsorption at top sites is favored due to strong adsorbate–surface interactions, with additional stabilization at θ = 2/9 arising from favorable intermolecular separations. At higher coverage (θ = 1/3), bidentate adsorption is destabilized by strong intermolecular repulsion, and monodentate adsorption becomes energetically preferred as rotational freedom allows more favorable intermolecular spacing. Charge density differences, Bader charge, and density of states analyses show that charge transfer from the Ag surface is localized primarily on the nitro group and increases with coverage and adsorption denticity, although this increase does not directly correlate with adsorption strength at high coverage due to competing intermolecular interactions. These results demonstrate that surface coverage can induce a transition in preferred adsorption denticity driven by intermolecular interactions, highlighting the importance of adsorbate packing in organic molecule adsorption at metal interfaces.

Mitigation of polysulfide shuttle effect in Li-S batteries through catalytic disproportionation reaction

Polysulfides are poorly retained within porous cathodes and readily diffuse into the electrolyte over time, leading to the well-known shuttle effect that undermines the reversibility of Li-S batteries. Here, in this study, we demonstrate that catalytic disproportionation of polysulfides provides an effective pathway to suppress this process by rapidly converting dissolved species into solid sulfur and sulfides, thereby preventing their migration into the electrolyte. Fundamentally, the sluggish kinetics of sulfur redox reactions are responsible for the accumulation and redistribution of soluble polysulfides in the bulk electrolyte. By accelerating these kinetics, catalyzed disproportionation not only confines sulfur within the conductive cathode matrix but also promotes the homogeneous precipitation of Li₂S₂/Li₂S, which enhances electrochemical reversibility and cycling stability. Using nitrogen-doped carbon (NC800) as a model catalyst, we reveal its ability to drive a pseudo-16-electron reduction pathway, leading to a single dominant Li₂S product and uniform deposition within the porous framework. In contrast, a non-catalytic carbon (KB) yields multiple polysulfide intermediates and heterogeneous deposition. The mechanistic insights provided here highlight the pivotal role of catalytic disproportionation in reshaping sulfur redox pathways and offer a rational strategy for mitigating polysulfide shuttling in practical Li-S pouch cells.

Trajectory-independent speed limits for controlled open quantum systems

Existing quantum speed limits for controlled open quantum systems depend on the specified trajectory. For example, lower bounds on quantum annealing times in the presence of dissipation depend explicitly on the chosen annealing schedule. Recently, schedule-independent speed limits have been derived for annealing in the closed quantum system setting [L. P. García-Pintos et al ., SciPost Phys. 18 , 159 (2025)]. In this work, we generalize these results to open quantum systems, deriving schedule-independent lower bounds for quantum annealing times in systems described by a Lindblad master equation. We analyze the interplay between coherent control and dissipation in single- and two-qubit examples, demonstrating that the derived lower bounds capture key scaling behavior with respect to the strength of the dissipator. Finally, we apply the bound to thermal state preparation and show that the bound matches the expected asymptotic behavior for an Ising model in the high-temperature limit.

Physical and Operational Status of the Photovoltaic Systems in the Municipality of Pinotepa de Don Luis, Oaxaca, One Year after Their Installation [Estado fisico y operativo de los sistemas fotovoltaicos en el municipio de Pinotepa de Don Luis, Oaxaca un ano despues de su instalacion]

In November 1990, an inspection visit was made to the residential lighting photovoltaic systems that had been installed approximately one year before in the rural communities of the Municipality of Pinotepa de Don Luis, in the State of Oaxaca. The main purpose of the visit was to evaluate the physical and operational status of these systems. The systems typically consist of a photovoltaic module with a capacity of 30 or 35 Watts, an automotive type battery, an indicator of the status of charge of the battery, 3 fluorescent lamps and the corresponding installation, including cables, connection or outlet box and switches. It can be seen that the systems are in good physical condition and do not show any signs of intentionally caused damage. However, the incidence of failures is higher than what had been expected; therefore the operational status of these systems is considered to be below a level that could be accepted, with a tendency to getting worse. The main problem that has been detected is the lack of automatic charge controllers. This problem has caused other important failures. Serious deficiencies were appreciated in the installations, which show evidence of the poor workmanship of the installers. The lack of system standardization is evident, both regarding the components and the installation. As a consequence, there are technical factors which indicate that the installed systems will keep deteriorating at a rate faster than normal, and will stop operating in a short time unless urgent preventive and corrective measures are taken. The attitude of the users with respect to the systems is generally positive. However, there are elements that make the correct operation and maintenance of these systems a very difficult task. The users did not receive any training regarding the best way to operate and take care of their systems, nor any other information in relation to their technical limitations.

Conserved Macromolecular Architecture of Poplar Secondary Cell Walls Revealed by ssNMR and Atomistic Modeling

The macromolecular architecture of plant secondary cell walls governs wood's mechanical and biochemical properties, yet its natural intra-species variability remains poorly characterized. Here, we combined 13C solid-state NMR (ssNMR), multivariate statistical analysis, and molecular modeling to profile nanoscale structure across 13 genetically diverse Populus trichocarpa genotypes grown in 13C-enriched atmospheres. SsNMR-derived phenotypes spanning composition, structure, mobility, and inter-polymer proximities reveal a conserved architecture, with a subtle yet coordinated variation organizing into dominant structural and secondary mobility axes. A representative atomistic model captures these features and reproduces experimental metrics. Molecular dynamics simulations support a weak but consistent positive correlation between cellulose abundance and crystalline-like order, with interior cellulose chains enriched in tg (trans-gauche) conformations without expanding crystalline cores. Together, experiment and simulation reveal a genetically buffered, broadly conserved nanoscale architecture across genotypes, where subtle fine-tuning of cellulose bundling and matrix packing balances mechanical performance with biological function.

Complex-Concentrated Anion Doping Enables Ultra-Stable Lattice Oxygen and Structural Integrity in Lithium-Rich Layered Oxide Cathodes

Lithium- and manganese-rich layered oxides (LMR) stand out as next-generation lithium-ion cathode chemistries, which harness both transition-metal and lattice-oxygen redox processes to deliver exceptional capacity and energy density. However, their full potential is hindered by intrinsic oxygen instability and structural degradation, resulting in pronounced voltage fade and capacity decay. Here, we present a complex-concentrated anion-doping paradigm in which multiple anions, F, Br, and S, are incorporated into the oxygen sublattice to enhance oxygen-redox and structural stability. X-ray absorption spectroscopy and aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy confirm ultra-stable local oxygen coordination environments during long-term cycling, with detrimental phase transformations and oxygen-loss-induced cavitation dramatically inhibited. Notably, we show that the characteristic LiTM6 transition metal (TM) honeycomb ordering is preserved even after electrochemical cycling. Concurrently, this strategy yields an unprecedented volume change of only 0.63% upon charging to 4.8 V vs. Li+/Li, achieving the first zero-strain LMR cathode. The resulting LMR cathode delivers ultralow voltage fade (1 mV per cycle during the first 100 cycles and becomes negligible in subsequent cycles) and outstanding energy retention (93% after 200 cycles) in a pouch cell configuration. Our complex-concentrated anion-doping concept establishes a broadly applicable strategy for resolving chemo-mechanical failure mechanisms in ceramic intercalation electrodes for next-generation energy storage.

Multi-sensor Observations of a High-velocity Fireball over the South Atlantic on 2026 April 1

A high-velocity fireball was detected over the South Atlantic (41.9°S, 54.7°W) on 2026 April 1 at 02:13:14 UTC by U.S. Government (USG) sensors, with peak brightness at 90.5 km altitude. The event was well-observed from geostationary orbit by two civilian lightning imagers with near-orthogonal geometry, the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-East Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) and the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites Meteosat Third Generation Imager 1 Lightning Imager, and it produced low-frequency acoustic signatures. The GLM measured a total radiated energy of 2.4 × 10 10 J, corresponding to a calculated impact energy of 0.086 kt TNT equivalent. Stereoscopic triangulation of the imager tracks yields an independent pre-atmospheric velocity of ~57 km s −1 , some 18% below the USG-reported value. Because orbital provenance is acutely sensitive to the entry velocity, whose reported uncertainty could be substantial, this discrepancy is notable. We document the multi-sensor record and identify the analysis required to assess provenance, which a subsequent study will present.
