Hidden amplitude zeros from the double-copy map

Recently, Arkani-Hamed proposed the existence of zeros in scattering amplitudes in certain quantum field theories including the cubic adjoint scalar theory Tr ( ϕ 3 ) , the S U ( N ) nonlinear sigma model and Yang-Mills theory. These hidden zeros are special kinematic points where the amplitude vanishes and factorizes into a product of lower-point amplitudes, similar to factorization near poles. In this paper, we show a close connection between the existence of such zeros and the double-copy map. In fact, compatibility with the Bern-Carrasco-Johansson relations requires the presence of these zeros. We also show that these zeros extend via the Kawai-Lewellen-Tye relations to special Galileon amplitudes and their corrections, evincing that these hidden zeros are also present in permutation-invariant amplitudes. Three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations of laser-driven multiradiation sources based on double-layer targets

Double-layer targets (DLTs), made of a low-density foam on top of a solid substrate, can efficiently convert the energy of a high-intensity laser to provide sources of photons and protons. We investigate a 30-fs pulse with a peak intensity of I ~ 8.7×10 20 W/cm 2 and a peak power of ~120 TW interacting with a DLT using three-dimensional (3D) particle-in-cell simulations. We focus on providing quantitative results in full 3D geometry on the foam thickness dependence; on the competition between two photon-generating processes in DLTs, i.e., nonlinear inverse Compton scattering (NICS) and bremsstrahlung (BS); and on the acceleration of protons via enhanced target-normal sheath acceleration. Here, we discuss conversion efficiency, average energy, and angular distributions of such multiradiation sources. We find that NICS can prevail over BS if the DLT's substrate is thin enough (~µ⁢m) and that the optimal foam thickness that maximizes the conversion efficiency in NICS and BS photons and the proton cutoff energy, among those considered, is the same (15µ⁢m). These results show that DLTs constitute an excellent tool for developing relatively compact and optimized laser-driven multicomponent radiation sources.

Ab Initio Treatment of Collective Correlations and the Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay of 48 Ca

Working with Hamiltonians from chiral effective field theory, we develop a novel framework for describing arbitrary deformed medium-mass nuclei by combining the in-medium similarity renormalization group with the generator coordinate method. The approach leverages the ability of the first method to capture dynamic correlations and the second to include collective correlations without violating symmetries. In this work, we use our scheme to compute the matrix element that governs the neutrinoless double beta decay of 48 Ca to 48 Ti, and find it to have the value 0.61, near or below the predictions of most phenomenological methods. The result opens the door to ab initio calculations of the matrix elements for the decay of heavier nuclei such as 76 Ge, 130 Te, and 136 Xe.

Observation of Enhanced Double Parton Scattering in Proton-Lead Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$= 8.16 TeV

A study of prompt charm-hadron pair production in proton-lead collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}$ = 8.16 TeV is performed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 30 nb -1 , collected with the LHCb experiment. Production cross sections for different pairs of charm hadrons are measured and kinematic correlations between the two charm hadrons are investigated. This is the first measurement of associated production of two charm hadrons in proton-lead collisions. The results confirm the predicted enhancement of double parton scattering production in proton-lead collisions compared to the single parton scattering production.

Correlated Double-Electron Additions at the Edge of a Two-Dimensional Electronic System

We create laterally large and low-disorder GaAs quantum-well-based quantum dots that act as small two-dimensional electron systems. We monitor tunneling of single electrons to the dots by means of capacitance measurements and identify single-electron capacitance peaks in the addition spectrum from occupancies of one up to thousands of electrons. The data show two remarkable phenomena in the Landau level filling factor range ν = 2 to ν = 5 in selective probing of the edge states of the dot: (i) Coulomb blockade peaks arise from the entrance of two electrons rather than one; (ii) at and near ν = 5/2 and at fixed gate voltage, these double-height peaks appear uniformly in a magnetic field with a flux periodicity of h/2e, but they group into pairs at other filling factors.

Arrested Phase Separation in Double-Exchange Models: Large-Scale Simulation Enabled by Machine Learning

In this work, we present large-scale dynamical simulations of electronic phase separation in the single-band double-exchange model based on deep-learning neural-network potentials trained from small-size exact diagonalization solutions. We uncover an intriguing correlation-induced freezing behavior as doped holes are segregated from half filled insulating background during equilibration. While the aggregation of holes is stabilized by the formation of ferromagnetic clusters through Hund’s coupling between charge carriers and local magnetic moments, this stabilization also creates confining potentials for holes when antiferromagnetic spin-spin correlation is well developed in the background. The dramatically reduced mobility of the self-trapped holes prematurely disrupts further growth of the ferromagnetic clusters, leading to an arrested phase separation. Implications of our findings for phase separation dynamics in materials that exhibit colossal magnetoresistance effect are discussed.

Solid-Density Ion Temperature from Redshifted and Double-Peaked Stark Line Shapes

Heβ spectral line shapes are important for diagnosing temperature and density in many dense plasmas. This work presents Heβ line shapes measured with high spectral resolution from solid-density plasmas with minimized gradients. The line shapes show hallmark features of Stark broadening, including quantifiable redshifts and double-peaked structure with a significant dip between the peaks; these features are compared to models through a Markov chain Monte Carlo framework. Line shape theory using the dipole approximation can fit the width and peak separation of measured line shapes, but it cannot resolve an ambiguity between electron density n e and ion temperature T i , since both parameters influence the strength of quasistatic ion microfields. Here a line shape model employing a full Coulomb interaction for the electron broadening computes self-consistent line widths and redshifts through the monopole term; redshifts have different dependence on plasma parameters and thus resolve the n e – T i ambiguity. The measured line shapes indicate densities that are 80–100% of solid, identifying a regime of highly ionized but well-tamped plasma. This analysis also provides the first strong evidence that dense ions and electrons are not in thermal equilibrium, despite equilibration times much shorter than the duration of x-ray emission; cooler ions may arise from nonclassical thermalization rates or anomalous energy transport. Furthermore, the experimental platform and diagnostic technique constitute a promising new approach for studying ion-electron equilibration in dense plasmas.

Z 3 Parafermion in the Double Charge Kondo Model

Quantum impurity models with frustrated Kondo interactions can support quantum critical points with fractionalized excitations. Recent experiments [arXiv:2108.12691] on a circuit containing two coupled metal-semiconductor islands exhibit transport signatures of such a critical point. Here we show using bosonization that the double charge-Kondo model describing the device can be mapped in the Toulouse limit to a sine-Gordon model. Its Bethe-ansatz solution shows that a Z 3 parafermion emerges at the critical point, characterized by a fractional $\frac{1}{2}$ln(3) residual entropy, and scattering fractional charges e/3. Finally, we also present full numerical renormalization group calculations for the model and show that the predicted behavior of conductance is consistent with experimental results.

Observation of Same-Sign W W Production from Double Parton Scattering in Proton-Proton Collisions at s = 13 TeV

The first observation of the production of W$^\pm$W$^\pm$ bosons from double parton scattering processes using same-sign electron-muon and dimuon events in proton-proton collisions is reported. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$ recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV using the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. Multivariate discriminants are used to distinguish the signal process from the main backgrounds. A binned maximum likelihood fit is performed to extract the signal cross section. The measured cross section for production of same-sign W bosons decaying leptonically is 80.7 $\pm$ 11.2 (stat) $^{+9.5}_{-8.6}$ (syst) $\pm$ 12.1 (model) fb, whereas the measured fiducial cross section is 6.28 $\pm$ 0.81 (stat) $\pm$ 0.69 (syst) $\pm$ 0.37 (model) fb. The observed significance of the signal is 6.2 standard deviations above the background-only hypothesis.

Alternative Pathway to Double-Core-Hole States

Excited double-core-hole states of isolated water molecules resulting from the sequential absorption of two x-ray photons have been investigated. Further, these states are formed through an alternative pathway, where the initial step of core ionization is accompanied by the shake-up of a valence electron, leading to the same final states as in the core-ionization followed by core-excitation pathway. The capability of the x-ray free-electron laser to deliver very intense, very short, and tunable light pulses is fully exploited to identify the two different pathways.

First Double-Differential Cross Section Measurement of Neutral-Current 𝜋 0 Production in Neutrino-Argon Scattering in the MicroBooNE Detector

We report the first double-differential cross section measurement of neutral-current neutral pion (NC⁢𝜋 0 ) production in neutrino-argon scattering, as well as single-differential measurements of the same channel in terms of final states with and without protons. The kinematic variables of interest for these measurements are the 𝜋 0 momentum and the 𝜋 0 scattering angle with respect to the neutrino beam. A total of 4971 candidate NC⁢𝜋 0 events fully contained within the MicroBooNE detector are selected using data collected at a mean neutrino energy of ∼0.8 GeV from 6.4 ×10 20 protons on target from the Booster Neutrino Beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. After extensive data-driven model validation to ensure unbiased unfolding, the Wiener-singular-value-decomposition method is used to extract nominal flux-averaged cross sections. The results are compared to predictions from commonly used neutrino event generators, which tend to overpredict the measured NC⁢𝜋 0 cross section, especially in the 0.2–0.5 GeV/c 𝜋 0 momentum range and at forward scattering angles. Events with at least one proton present in the final state are also underestimated. This data will help improve the modeling of NC⁢𝜋 0 production, which represents a major background in measurements of charge-parity violation in the neutrino sector and in searches for new physics beyond the standard model.

Site-Selective Polar Compensation of Mott Electrons in a Double-Perovskite Heterointerface

Double-perovskite oxides (DPOs) with two transition metal ions ($A_{2}BB'O_{6}$) offer a fascinating platform for exploring exotic physics and practical applications. Studying these DPOs as ultrathin epitaxial films on single crystalline substrates can add another dimension to engineering electronic, magnetic, and topological phenomena. Understanding the consequence of polarity mismatch between the substrate and the DPO would be the first step toward this broad goal. Here, we investigate this by studying the interface between a prototypical insulating DPO $Nd_{2}NiMnO_{6}$ and a wide band gap insulator $SrTiO_{3}$. The interface is found to be insulating in nature. By combining several experimental techniques and density functional theory, we establish a site-selective charge compensation process that occurs explicitly at the Mn site of the film, leaving the Ni sites inert. We further demonstrate that such surprising selectivity, which cannot be explained by existing mechanisms of polarity compensation, is directly associated with their electronic correlation energy scales. This study establishes the crucial role of Mott physics in polar compensation process and paves the way for designer doping strategies in complex oxides.

Magnetic ground state of La 2 LiMoO 6 : A comparison with other Mo 5+ ( S=1/2 ) double perovskites

La 2 LiMoO 6 is a double perovskite (DP) with P2 1 /n symmetry based on the Mo5+ ion, 4d1, t2g1, S=1/2. It is isostructural with Sr 2 YMoO 6 , the magnetic ground state of which is apparently a very unusual collective spin singlet or valence-bond glass state as is the case for cubic (Fm-3m) Ba 2 YMoO 6 . Initial studies of La 2 LiMoO 6 suggested a different ground state from the other DPs but no clear conclusions could be drawn. A more detailed study is presented here including magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and elastic neutron-scattering results. This DP is now well characterized as an antiferromagnet, T N =18K, via observation of magnetic Bragg peaks in neutron scattering and an anomaly in the magnetic heat capacity. The ordering wave vector is k=( 1/21/2 0), consistent with a type I face-centered-cubic magnetic structure, and the ordered moment on Mo 5+ is 0.32(11)μ B , much reduced from the spin-only value of 1μ B . The index, f=|v c |/T N ~3, indicates a low level of frustration. The heat-capacity data above T N can be interpreted in terms of a one-dimensional spin-correlation model, as can the low-temperature data which follow a T 1 power law. This is consistent with an earlier suggestion. The difference with isostructural Sr 2 YMoO 6 is attributed to differences in the local distortion of the Mo–O octahedron and the resulting orbital ordering.

Iridium valence variation and carrier sign tuning in ( Ca , Ba ) x La 2 – x CuIrO 6 double perovskites

Here, we report the structure and properties of ( Ca , Ba ) x La 2 – x CuIrO 6 . The rock-salt double perovskite structure goes through a P 1 ¯ to P 2 1 / n phase transition with increasing Ba content but not with Ca content. In both cases, the Ir ion is oxidized from 4 + to 5 + with increasing substitution. Transport and magnetic properties measurements reveal that all compositions are insulating with hysteretic spin-freezing magnetic behavior. Seebeck coefficient measurements reveal a large thermopower change from + 176 μ V /K in La 2 CuIrO 6 to – 223 μ V /K with increasing Ba content in Ba x La 2 – x CuIrO 6 . This behavior is modeled well by the Heikes formula for correlated hopping conduction. ( Ca , Ba ) x La 2 – x CuIrO 6 provides a model system for investigations of other systems with similar carrier sign tuning, with applications toward semiconductors and thermoelectric materials.

Precision measurement of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry for dijet production at intermediate pseudorapidity in polarized 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV

The STAR Collaboration reports precise measurements of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry, 𝐴 𝐿⁢𝐿 , for dijet production with at least one jet at intermediate pseudorapidity 0.8 < 𝜂 jet < 1.8 in polarized proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV. This study explores partons scattered with a longitudinal momentum fraction (𝑥) from 0.01 to 0.5, which are predominantly characterized by interactions between high-𝑥 valence quarks and low-𝑥 gluons. The results are in good agreement with previous measurements at 200 GeV with improved precision and are found to be consistent with the predictions of global analyses that find the gluon polarization to be positive. In contrast, the negative gluon polarization solution from the JAM Collaboration is found to be strongly disfavored.

Using a modified double deep image prior for crosstalk mitigation in multislice ptychography

Multislice ptychography is a high-resolution microscopy technique used to image multiple separate axial planes using a single illumination direction. However, multislice ptychography reconstructions are often degraded by crosstalk, where some features on one plane erroneously contribute to the reconstructed image of another plane. Here, the use of a modified `double deep image prior' (DDIP) architecture is demonstrated in mitigating crosstalk artifacts in multislice ptychography. Utilizing the tendency of generative neural networks to produce natural images, a modified DDIP method yielded good results on experimental data. For one of the datasets, it is shown that using DDIP could remove the need of using additional experimental data, such as from X-ray fluorescence, to suppress the crosstalk. This method may help X-ray multislice ptychography work for more general experimental scenarios.

Novel Fault Location Method for Power Systems Based on Attention Mechanism and Double Structure GRU Neural Network

Fault location is one of the most essential techniques to maintain the stable operation of power systems. A fast and accurate fault location allows operators to restore power grids faster and avoid economic losses. Conventional methods rely on expert knowledge to extract the necessary features (e.g. DWT, DFT). For large systems, more coupling effects of transmission lines require more complex feature engineering, and incomplete features can easily introduce large errors. To overcome this, a deep learning approach without manual feature extraction is introduced to the fault location model under big data application. Towards this end, in the proposed method, the attention mechanism, the Bi-GRU and a dual structure network are applied to analyze the current data from different perspectives. Complete information for the fault features is extracted for the fault location. Based on a time series model and benefit from the ability to internally acquire the information architecture of faulty line, the established model is adaptive to the power grids with very complex topologies. Simulation results indicate that the proposed double-structure model reduces the maximum error and is less affected by noise. In comparison with different structures and different models, the proposed method shows better performance in IEEE 39-bus system.

Comprehensive Efficiency Analysis of Current Source Inverter Based on CSI-Type Double Pulse Test and Genetic Algorithm

A current-source inverter (CSI) has a natural output voltage boost feature that can be advantageous for traction applications. Switching frequency is one of the easily-controlled variables that can be adjusted to improve the CSI efficiency at different operating points when the boost function is used. This paper investigates a CSI-based double-pulse test (DPT) measurement that mimics normal operation of the CSI. A loss model of the CSI is developed based on the CSI-type DPT experimental results. The impacts of the switching frequency and voltage boost ratio on the CSI efficiency and output voltage ripple are investigated. Based on the loss model, a genetic algorithm has been introduced that makes it possible to optimize the CSI's switching frequency and modulation index to maximize its efficiency under any desired operating condition.
